Called a round barn it is technically an octagon shape. Otto and Ruth Rosenau purchased this house, built by I. L. Jones in Ash Township. The Tom Jones family descendants were part of the large 10,000 acres Jones Ranch in Clark County’s early years. Current owners are Fred and Patty Rosenau and Fred’s been working on preserving the old barn for years to come. held his hands cupped under it tak- ing the chance when he saw some white showing. “She dropped her egg right into my hands. It was nice and warm and fresh,” recalled Rosenau. “You don’t hear that story very often.” Silo history “The old silo used to have a wooden roof on it as I remember my brothers and I picking up wood pieces from it after storms had blown some of it off.” The 40 foot high silo has been empty for decades now and current- ly has a couple trees growing inside of it. The roof has been gone for many years. The barn over time has started to pull away from the silo so Rosenau put in cables and turn buckles to keep the structure tight. Barn history Where the barn meets the silo, some 3 x 12s are bolted to the silo and rafters support it up and down explained Rosenau. He is finishing up his roof project on the barn cur- rently by adding tar or what he calls ‘black plastic’. This is being put on the area where the silo meets the barn. “My family only used the silo one year. It was such a job to fill it and unload it again we used an easier set-up after that. “Our farm is part of the Jones ranch history where Tom, Vid, I. L. and Emmett had their big cattle ranch in the early years of Clark County. I remember I.L. Jones and his wife Bessie after they had moved to Clark. He would tell of finding a lot of buffalo skulls in the area after they moved there.” Glenn and Pam Handke and Donald and Sally Handke also live in the vicinity of the former Jones ranch area. For several years, Fred’s sisters, Helen, Clara and Adeline have spent a few weeks in the summer at the house built by I. L. Jones on the Rosenau farm place. Fred and Patty still own the old hand-crank cement mixer that was used when building the old barns and houses in the early years. Steel (tin) used from another barn south of Redfield that Fred helped tear down, was used in re- cent years on a lot of the walls of the barn. It was a red color and there was enough to do three sides of the barn. The north side remains as wood and has to be painted about every five years or so to keep it up says Rosenau. From 1976 to 1983, in Fred’s words - “The Lord led us off the farm and then he led us back.” Even though living in Ellendale, N.D. for those years, they never let go of the farm. When Fred and Pat- ty moved back to the area in 1983, their family had grown to four chil- dren - James, Andrea, David and Nathan. They moved into Clark later, but have always held on to the farm place. Doing high surface work is what Fred’s been known for in recent years working on Clark Center, Good Hope and Calvary Lutheran churches and their steeples. “I’m 77 years old and the ladder truck’s for sale,” ended Rosenau. “I’d like to be done with these jobs now.” Birthday Mary Hurlbert Mary Hurlbert of Clark will cel- ebrate her 90th birthday on July 30, 2020.
