SolarGrothe future in renewable energy

Guaranteed use your own electricity and still get paid to generate

electric

Guaranteed payment of 41.3p per kwh of electricity you produce

Guaranteed for the next 25 years

Guaranteed better return on your investment than in a savings

account

Guaranteed reduce your carbon foot print

Since April 2010 the government has announced the new “Feed-In-Tariffs” which means you will get a guaranteed payment of 41.3p per Kwh for any electric you produce from the solar panels guaranteed for the next 25 years whether you use it yourself or not! That’s right you can use all the electric yourself and still get paid to generate electric. What this means in the real world is if you in invest in the region of £7700 into a solar system for your home, this will buy a 1.4Kwp system that will produce approximately 1200 Kwh per year (based on a southerly facing roof). Times this by 41.3p and that gives you a yearly income tax free of £495.60 indexed linked, plus it will save you buying 1200kwh from an electric supplier, saving you another £168.00 (based on you buying at 14p per unit). Not only that, but in addition the utility company will assume you export 50% of your generation which will give you another £18 based on a export rate of 3p per unit!Total savings and payments per year is £681.60. Solar system is £7700/£681.60 which makes payback for the system in year 11, and you continue to earn another 14 years of £681.60 per year, which is £9542.40 tax free, rising over the years because its indexed linked. What are you waiting for?

Cancer Support Bradford and Airedale’s new shirt sponsorship initiative in conjunction with The Bees (Bradford and Bingley Rugby Club) proved to be a landslide victory at its inaugural event on Saturday 11th December.

Despite the poor playing conditions The Bees pulled off

an outstanding performance and so did the charity with eight local companies pledging their support.

“By sponsoring The Bees’ shirts at our special Christmas Charity Rugby match, the companies involved not only benefi tted from fabulous exposure at the event itself but had the satisfaction of knowing that their marketing money was being put to very good use,” explained Hayley Collis, Cancer Support Bradford and Airedale’s Fundraiser. “We really are unique in the region in that we provide personal 1-2-1 face to face cancer support – no other charity in the area is able to do this. The special commemorative shirt designed specifi cally for this match featured all the sponsors’ logos and our own new redesigned charity logo. Each sponsor was given

a shirt to keep – once it’s been laundered of course!” The charity, based in Smith Lane, Bradford was previously referred to as Bradford Cancer Support but has recently revised its logo to incorporate mention of the wider Airedale district which it also supports. “We have always provided help to people in Airedale, but it seems to be our work in Bradford that is better known. By updating our image we hope to reassure people beyond the immediate Bradford area that there is support available for them too. This was our fi rst fundraising initiative to feature the new logo and we are so grateful to The Bees and the sponsors, it was a terrifi c match,” added Hayley.   The big hearted local companies sponsoring the bespoke shirts include Damart, Sovereign Health Care, Melrose Textiles, Woodhead Plumbing, Lucid Events, 23 Club, Dalesman and Halder Bros.

Damart’s Marketing Director, John Bottomley said: “Damart is a big fan of the rugby club and the charity who both do excellent work supporting the local community in which Damart is based. We’re delighted to be supporting them by sponsoring a shirt for this very worthwhile campaign.” Other companies wishing to contribute should contact Hayley Collis on 07968 786 555 or email [email protected]

W ell, not quite these days, but feeding the birds still remains close to the hearts of animal lovers, especially as

the bitter chill of winter sets in.  However, things have moved on a good deal since the days of Mary Poppins.  Veterinary surgeon Iain Booth of VetUK explains that there is a lot more to it than a few breadcrumbs and toast crusts. Wild bird seeds, mixes, peanuts, mealworms, seeded fat balls along with robust weather and rodent resistant accessories provide a comprehensive selection of products available to help us to do our bit to help our feathered friends.Nutritionally wild birds have very specifi c needs all year round and it is important to offer foods that have been developed specially to ensure the health of the birds we feed.  Not only that, but different blends are now available which will appeal to different species, so there is quite a range to choose from.  Goldfi nches, for example, have a penchant for Niger seeds.  Be patient and just as you think they’re not buying it, a fl ock will descend. Spotted Woodpeckers meanwhile are partial to peanuts.  Squirrels like them too though, so it’s an idea to invest in a feeder designed to foil them. The British Trust for Ornithology and the Royal Society for the Protection on Birds both recommend wild birds are fed all year round.  Naturally their requirements are greater in late

autumn and winter when natural resources are in shorter supply. High energy levels from feeds rich in oils, suet or fat are also needed during spring when birds are busy breeding and raising young. The time of day for feeding is signifi cant as birds lose energy maintaining body temperature overnight, so a good breakfast is essential to set them up for the day. Once you have established a feeding regime it is important not to disappoint them, as they will depend on you. Iain recommends establishing several feeding areas and moving them regularly to avoid bacterial build up.  Predators need to be considered when selecting suitable feeding sites, so you need to ensure that you set table and feeder heights accordingly and make sure birds feeding on the ground have a good line of sight. Hygiene is also important, so it is advisable to feed little and often, replacing old or wet food to prevent build-up of bacteria or mould, particularly on table and ground feeding stations.  These should be regularly cleaned with a safe disinfectant and you should always wash your hands after handling bird products. Feeding the birds is rewarding especially when new species are attracted to your garden and the specially formulated high quality feed mixtures encourage a variety of colour, song and habit in your garden visitors – they’re far more tempting than a bit of burnt toast now and then.

Kick Start Your Business in 2011

by Angela Riches, Editor

Here at MAD Publications Ltd we offer every marketing service you could possibly need to launch a new

venture or give an existing business that much needed kick start in the New Year.Through our publications, Here & Now and The Local Focal, we will put your business directly into the homes of your local target market from as little as £30 plus VAT per month!

We know through experience how powerful this way of showcasing your business can be as the whole reason we started doing what we do was to raise awareness of a new business venture Dave, my husband,

took a chance on fi ve years ago. We realised that if we produced and distributed a targeted, local publication advertising his and other businesses in the area, there was a much better chance of kick starting interest from local residents who were probably buying products and services from outside of their immediate district. By delivering the fi nished publication ourselves, we knew exactly where and when it was being delivered, and as our own new business was included we could very easily monitor the response rate and success of such a publication, and to our delight it was amazing.

We started very locally with Here & Now for Idle, Thackley, Apperley Bridge and Greengates; word soon spread and our distribution quickly grew to include Calverley, Rawdon, Yeadon, Guiseley and Baildon, with additional distribution through Sainsbury’s stores in Greengates and Otley, plus Nuffi eld Health Clubs, Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel & Country Club and The Yorkshire Clinic.Dave Riches

Realising how time consuming this was becoming, we needed to make a decision on whether or not to make this a full time business, so I took a huge leap of faith and resigned from a secure, well paid job to concentrate on launching a new edition of Here & Now for the Aire Valley. This gave us two editions of the magazine being produced and distributed alternate months with the Aire Valley distribution being: Baildon, Bingley, Eldwick, Gilstead, East Morton, Keighley, Steeton, Silsden and Crosshills, plus Sainsbury’s in Keighley and the same other distribution centres as for the Leeds/Bradford edition.A Leafl et Distribution service and The Local Focal soon followed, with editions for Bingley, Baildon, Apperley Bridge and Greengates, Idle and Thackley and a Calverley edition.

We were both now working in the business full time with David Dunne our full time designer, and realised last year that if we offered a design and print service we would then be able to provide a seamless, one stop centre for all the marketing needs of

local businesses. At this point we became the local Printing.com which enables us to offer savings on print costs of up to 76%!

Things have changed enormously in the last fi ve years, times are much tougher for everyone and the fi rst cut back most businesses will make is on their marketing and advertising – WRONG!When cash is tight you just need to be more selective about what opportunities you choose, increasing your marketing in a recession puts you in a much stronger position after it has passed, plus those who continue to spend gain market share from competitors during tough periods.

This is where we can help any business in whichever marketing activity they choose - advertising, leafl et design, print and distribution, newsletters, scratch card promotions and marketing material makeovers, in fact whatever is required to help you succeed and stand out from your competitors.R = Recovery – NOT Recession!

To see everything we do, fi nd out more about us and read any of our publications online - www.madpublications.co.ukMAD Publications and Printing.com Offer No False Promises Just Good Business.David Dunne

Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire, in tribute to the Goddess Juno. The following day was the Feast of Lupercalia, where

sacrifices and rituals took place in honour of a heathen god. While sacrifices seem rather terrifying, feasts always sound good to us, and a humble root vegetable may well be your secret to success this February 14th.

Forget imported, out of season asparagus, beetroot is the ultimate Valentine’s Day vegetable. Since Roman times, beetroot juice has been considered an aphrodisiac and its vibrant bright pink colour is stunningly romantic. Jane’s Beetroot Soup is a great Valentine’s Day dish, light and full of flavour, with a striking swirl of sour cream and chives. Beetroot is also incredibly versatile, so

for something sweet, impress your date

beetroot (or carrot) cake by Jane Baxter

Instructions:Preheat the oven to 165°C. Grease and line a 25cm loose-based cake tin. Mix together the flour, baking powder and sugar in a large bowl. Add the sultanas and grated beetroot. Beat

the oil and eggs together, then add to the bowl. Combine with either a wooden spoon or electric mixer. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1-1¼ hours. Insert a metal skewer into the cake; if it comes out clean, then the cake is cooked. Cool on a wire rack. As an alternative, substitute beetroot for carrots to make a carrot cake – it works

just as well.

soup or cake using a Valentine’s wooden spoon. In Wales, wooden love spoons were given as gifts on February 14th, carved with hearts, keys and keyholes. Giving a carved spoon to your loved one symbolised the unlocking of your heart.

Fancy a glimpse into your future? According to an old wives’ tale, try twisting the stem of an apple whilst reciting the names of people you might

marry. You will marry the person whose name you’re calling

when the stem falls off. Then, cut the apple in half and count the pips. This is, so they say, the number of

children you’ll have.Whoever you’re planning to

surprise this year, Jane’s recipes are sure to make an impact. Look out

Guy Watson began farming at Riverford in Devon over 20 years ago. He was an organic vegbox pioneer, giving customers the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a fair price to customers and growers. Many of our customers are as passionate about the business as he is; no-one wanted the business to be large-scale. Guy teamed up with ‘sister’ farms who shared his passion and wanted to re-build the connection between grower and consumer.

River Nene was the first sister farm in 2005. From Sacrewell Lodge Farm near Peterborough, we deliver to homes throughout the east of England. River Swale followed in 2007, from Home Farm in North Yorkshire. River Swale supplies veg boxes across Yorkshire and the North East. Riverford at Norton has since opened, delivering organic veg to homes around the Hampshire area.

Working as a family of farms means we can maintain our commitment to low food miles, local employment and the support of local farmers and keep a close link between grower and consumer. .For more recipes and to join our box scheme visit: www.riverford.co.uk, www.rivernene.co.uk and www.riverswale.co.uk.

Beetroot is also incredibly versatile, so

beetroot (or carrot) cake by Jane Baxter

Instructions:Preheat the oven to 165°C. Grease and line a 25cm loose-based cake tin. Mix together the flour, baking powder and sugar in a large bowl. Add the sultanas and grated beetroot. Beat

the oil and eggs together, then add to the bowl. Combine with either a wooden spoon or electric mixer. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1-1¼ hours. Insert a metal skewer into the cake; if it comes out clean, then the cake is cooked. Cool on a wire rack. As an alternative, substitute beetroot for carrots to make a carrot cake – it works

just as well.

with Beetroot Cake.To really get into the spirit, make your

soup or cake using a Valentine’s wooden spoon.

Look out
