Give your grandchildren the gift ofLife. When you are trying to choosejust the right gift for your grandchil-dren, you can have a tough time sift-ing through the newest trends andfads. Last week it was this pop star, next week it may be a new cartooncharacter. On top of that, you don’twant to get something that won’tlast 10 minutes out of the package. One gift that will last for many yearsis a life insurance policy. There aremany reasons why it can be an excel-lent gift for your grandchild.

Affordability – The younger thechild’s age, the lower the premiums.Protection – Illness or injury mayaffect a child’s ability to purchase lifeinsurance coverage later in life.Coverage purchased now will contin-ue to provide protection, even if achild’s health changes, provided pre-miums are paid as required by thepolicy.

Financial Security – Life insurancecan be the foundation for a strongfinancial plan. The child may be ableto borrow against the accumulatedcash value (with interest charged) topay for future expenses. While loansdecrease death benefits and cash sur-render values, the proceeds can beused for important expenses such asa college education or the purchaseof a home

Giving a gift of life insurance toyour grandchild can be one of themost significant things you do dur-ing your lifetime. He or she may notunderstand at the time how impor-tant the gift is, but should grow toappreciate it in the future. Take the

guesswork out of your gift shopping.Life insurance is a gift that will last alifetime.

Project Catnip (our subsidized

spay/neuter clinic for felines),Wellness Clinic for companion ani-mals and Canine Training & funclasses have been in full swing at theRiver’s Edge Farm. It is wonderful tosee that the community hasembraced these programs – all ofwhich are providing humane educa-tion and fundamental support to thehuman companion-animal bond. The profound value of works to helpsustain this bond is well understoodby front-line workers of animal shel-ters. However, the true significanceof these services to individual ani-mals and our community as a wholemay not be as readily apparent tothe general public.

Helping to assure that the human-companion animal bond staysstrong is naturally integral to ourmission of animal protection, but isalso tightly interconnected to pro-tecting and helping people as well. When ties between companion-ani-mals and humans are broken, ithurts us both. For the animals, thisis when they are at the greatest risk

of becoming uncared for and home-less which ultimately places theirvery lives in real jeopardy. Althoughour shelter doesn’t euthanizehealthy animals, euthanasia ofh e a l t h y, homeless cats and dogsremains the leading cause of deathof these species in the U.S.Moreover, for us humans who havean attachment with a pet, the loss orpotential loss of such a bond is natu-rally distressing and painful- becauseour human quality of life is so great-ly enhanced by all the relationshipoffers (especially the unconditionallove & companionship). The com-munity as a whole is also affected bythe strength of this special relation-ship. Preventive efforts to preservethis mutually beneficial bond cannot only help improve our quality oflife and reduce the number of ani-mals that ultimately end up in shel-ters or animal control facilities, butthey can also help to reduce animal-related risks to public safety andpublic health, calls to animal controland all the related expenses to our

In a recent newsletter, I detailed theneed for a new shelter, expandedfacilities and programs and why theFarm was chosen as our current co-location and future home. In thiscolumn, I would like to answer witha resounding “Yes”- to the questionthat moving the animals to theRiver’s Edge Farm (a new facility) is atop priority! While the house andgrounds at the Farm immediatelylent themselves for us to be able toset-up the aforementioned vitalFLSPCA programs and our adminis-trative offices, the facilities couldn’timmediately be used as safe andcomfortable living space for our ani-mals. While we all feel the urgencyto provide our orphan animal friendswith new and improved housinghere at the River’s Edge Farm, com-mittees are still actively working on

construction and project fundingplans. This preparation is sharplyfocused on the specialized and com-plex nature of today’s animal shel-ters. Today’s buildings are speciallydesigned and engineered to provideshelter animals awaiting adoption(especially those that need a littlemore time to find their foreverhome) a healthy and stimulatingenvironment. They also offer thehuman visitors and staff a welcom-ing and pleasant place to visit andwork and to all a facility that is ener-gy and cost efficient to run andmaintain. Emphasis is also beingplaced on how the whole process ofmoving the animals can be expedit-ed, while not compromising qualityof life improvements for shelteredanimals and while assuring the newfacility is built efficiently and willlast for many years to come. Again, please stay tuned for continuedreports of progress and how you canhelp, as we continue to work to getthe animals into the new digs theyneed and deserve!

Tony’s Story: My name is TonyRuggiero and I would like to wel-come you to Tony R's Steak andSeafood.

I came to this country from Libya,Africa as a legal immigrant in 1963and I could not speak a word ofEnglish. I've been in this country forover forty years. I am happily mar-ried to Maurina and have two beauti-ful children, Erica and Joe. Joe ismarried to Terri and they have twogreat kids - Joey and Bella.

Against everyone's advice, in 2004,I opened my first restaurant, TaninoRistorante Italiano, which became anovernight success. I know what peo-ple like and how they wanted to betreated. I felt with that combination, how could I go wrong? The restau-rant became my hobby and passion.I love seeing friends, old and new,

enjoying themselves. I strive for per-fection and try to teach my staff thatthis is something that I insist upon.

After four years of success withTanino's, I decided to open Tony R's.Maurina and I wanted to create alocal steakhouse with a city atmos-phere. We wanted Tony R's to holdall the things we have enjoyed inrestaurants across the country, whilecreating a place where every o n ewould feel comfortable and relaxed. We looked around and found theperfect spot for such a venture inCorning. It took nine months to tearapart and put back together the threebuildings that hold this restaurant.

A little about the building. Therestaurant part of this building wasbuilt in the early 1900's as a bank.Renovating a bank made primarily ofconcrete and metal was no easy task.We left the original marble floor, andhad it ground and polished to bringback its original shine. We also leftthe bank's vault as a feature of therestaurant. We removed the vault'ssafety deposit boxes and safes to

open up the vault for private dining. The floorboards from the foyer weremade into the mantles on the down-stairs fireplaces. We also replaced thecenter staircase, and the left front ofthe building. To create space for largeparties, we opened and renovatedthe upstairs. The animal on the fire-place is a Cape Buffalo. I got it on asafari in Zimbabwe in 2006, alongwith the Elan and the Wildabeast. Iwanted to bring them in so thateveryone could admire the size ofthese animals. The Cape Buffalo, weighing in at over 2000 pounds feda village for over a week.

Now about the food. Even thoughwe are a steak and seafood restau-rant, my primary goal was to have agreat steakhouse. Since I know peo-ple need choices, we added seafoodand several of Tanino's best dishes.R e m e m b e r, I know people lovechoices, so I wanted to have some-thing for everyone.

Not too bad for a legal immigrant.
