National Research UniversityThe Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod (UNN) was inaugurated on January 30, 1916 as the City People’s University, the first institution of higher education in Nizhni Novgorod.In 1918 it acquired the status of a State University becoming the first university to be established in Soviet Russia.In 1956 the University was named after the great Russian mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky.Twenty years later, in 1976, the University was awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.

UNN offers educational programs in 52 specialties. There are 32 Bachelor’s programs,
28 Master’s programs and 13 programs for intermediate professional education.
There are also 61 programs for postgraduate and postdoctoral students, with 17 dissertation councils awarding doctoral degrees (Candidate or Doctor of Sciences) in 35 fields of studies.

are in great demand in the society. These include short-term and
accelerated programs for those who want to obtain a second
higher education degree and for those who receive higher education on the basis of intermediate professional

UNN’s publishing house, Nizhni Novgorod University Press, has published over 1000 books during the last decade,

In 2009, the University printing house was reconstructed and received state-of-the-art equipment.
