Substation – Group Experience

• Project– Commission new substation transformer

• A Major (US) Electric Utility client suffered an outage while installing a new transformer, which cost them $500,000 dollars per day during the outage. They needed to qualify the operational status of the new transformer as soon as possible. They also were seeking a testing solution that could be employed to diminish potential downtime during future installations

• The Solution Regarding their immediate testing requirements, they had two options. They could test with grid power, which would require 2 weeks of testing to validate the transformer, or they could test with a load bank. They chose load bank testing with a single CR922 5MW 13.8kV unit and completed testing in exactly 2 hours and 23 minutes.

• The benefits to the customer Time to complete test reduced from 2 weeks to 1 day. Test solution for future transformer and substation projects was established. Load testing schedule was established with and in-house power systems monitoring program.

• Project– Commission new substation at industrial facility

• A New substation providing 13.8kV for facility use had been constructed on the property of a new industrial facility in North Carolina. The substation needed to be validated and commissioned prior to energizing the sensitive and critical system at the new facility.

• The Solution Commission substation current and voltage transformers, protective relays, breakers, and switches with (2) CR922 5MW resistive load banks. Almisehal proprietary CR922 is a medium voltage 5MW resistive load bank capable of supporting system test up to 15kV without the use of additional transformers and equipment.

• The benefits to the customer was able to commission entire substation in 1 day with ComRent load banks instead of a typical 14 day testing schedule and safely integrate the facility power systems with the commercial power on time and on budget.
