LO5: Evaluation

Introduction

After the production was over, we had to pitch our magazine to the publisher to see whether it was success. Now that I have pitched to the publisher, I have received some feedback based on my strengths, weaknesses and improvements to develop in the future.

The methods I used to gather my pitch feedback was a survey to my classmates “target market” through a website called Survey Monkey and also an interview with my publisher.

The strengths that the majority of my target audience spotted were: That I dressed formally, which made me look professional and proved to the publisher that I was really serious about BEATS magazine and want my magazine to be a success! I also used Prezi to present my pitch, which not only made it very clear but interactive and visual because of the different transformations and editing you can use to present the pitch. The actual information included in the Prezi was detailed and informative.

I also received some feedback on the apparent i.e. the areas that I need to improve and develop upon for the future. These were:

The lack in confidence that I came across for example, I spoke too quietly for the audience (including the publisher) to understand what I was trying to say. I also used a lot of informal language such as “great stuff”. This is very unprofessional and may make people think that I don’t know what I am talking about.

Individual areas of the magazine production

Psychographics

During the pre- production, I had to discuss and explain what Psychographics was and relate them to my intended target audience for the publication. This helped me to narrow down and shape my target audience. I received some feedback based on my strengths and weaknesses.

My strengths were as follows; the fact that I had explained what they were with a table to support this, which was also all well laid out.

However, there were some areas that I need to improve and develop in the future. These were; the lacks in detail of what my target audience are “explorers”, in which case I need to develop my answer and explain more in detail.

Socio Economic Needs

I then received some feedback on the Socio-Economic needs. My strengths were as follows; I had lots of detail of what socio economic needs were but I lacked in the use of media language such as “the stereotypes.” This connotes that in the future I need to use more media language.

The Magazine Pages

I received feedback for my front cover and double page spread (DPS), based on my strengths and weaknesses.

Firstly, I am going to discuss my front cover and then my double page spread.

My main strengths for my front cover that people came across were that my strapline was short and catchy and easy to relate to. My Masthead “BEATS!” is bold, strong and fits the purpose of the indie rock genre and finally the main image of the artist “George Ezra” is a very good quality.

However, I have received some feedback on areas that could be improved within the page such as having the promotion in the top right corner, which is clashing with the guitar in the main image, which would be better if it was resized and repositioned to prevent this from happening. I also need to make the red stroke effect around the barcode a bit thinner so that it does not seem too apparent and shocking. Lastly I need to change the front for the main headline and cover lines as they are said to be unsuitable.

Now for the double page spread. My main strengths for the double page spread was that I included the social media links and the page numbers are bold, clear and easy to read.

However there were some areas that I need to improve upon and develop in the future, for example the layout of the key facts about George, this includes the layout of text is unsuitable and there is a very minimum of questions asked, so I need to maybe have two columns and more questions asked.

I received some feedback for my production plan, based on my strengths and weaknesses that I will have to improve and develop in the future. My strengths were as follows: the layout was clear and concise, making it easy to read and I had lots of information within the plan including tasks to be done, people involved and equipment needed.

Budget Summary

There was some areas of the budget summary that I did well and also areas to improve and develop in the future. The strengths that were spotted are that my layout was clear, concise and easy to read and understand. Also I had a good knowledge and understanding of using excel to present the budget this way.

However, the marketing costs are slightly incorrect so I need amend this to make it more realistic and believable.

Budgeted Income

This is my budget income breakdown, which outlines the costs of the pages for adverts that I wanted in my magazine and also the sales income which tells us how much money I am receiving from selling the magazine. There are some strengths I have received for example the layout again was clear and concise to make it easy to understand and I had good knowledge of using excel to present the budget this way. There were no obvious improvements to be made for this particular area as everything that included was appropriate to the task to be done.

Profit and Loss Breakdown

Page 7: LO5 Evaluation

There were areas of the profit and loss graph/breakdown that I did well but also areas that I need to improve and develop.

My strengths were that I showed that Beats magazine had a positive growth in sales throughout the 5 years, however these figures may seem to be unrealistic and I may need to work on this to make it more believable and realistic.

Therefore there was only a slight improvement to be made. This was that my figures are slightly too high and may need to adjust these figures to match with my desired target audience.

Marketing/ Advertising

Now that I have gained some feedback based on the advertising and marketing of my magazine. I have decided as well as advertising on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, but also to adverting using different mediums such as posters, billboards, leaflets and viral videos, create an official website, advertise on publishers website.

According to the publisher, my Facebook page for Beats was my strongest area of the production and it was very realistic and a great way to increase my target audience and the magazine sales.

Survey Monkey/ Survey Results

After I completed the pitch, I sent everyone a survey via Survey Monkey based on how well they thought I had pitched to the publisher and how likely they were to purchase Beats magazine and many other factors. This helped me to understand my strengths, weaknesses and what I needed to develop and improve in the future.

Below are many examples of how the results from the Survey Monkey are presented.

Here I asked the audience “How Informative was my pitch?” The majority went with the second choice very informative with 5 people (71.43%) who choice this. The other 2 people (28.57%) thought it was extremely informative which was the first choice. This graph denotes that overall gives the reader the impression that my pitch was very positive.

Here I asked the audience “How would you rate my pitch? On a scale of 1-5 ” The majority of the people I asked said they would give me a 4/5. This denotes that there is a very positive response and there is only a small amount of critical feedback that needs to worked upon in the future. Such as speaking more clearly, try not to use the script as much, act confident by looking at my audience and projecting my voice and try not to use the phase “Stuff” use more media technical language.

Here I asked the audience “How likely are you to purchase BEATS Music magazine?” The majority of the people I asked 3-7 people chose the third option that they would likely purchase BEATS! Music magazine. The rest of the people I asked was an even spread from Extremely likely, very likely and unlikely.

This graph denotes to us that the results that I was given here is fairly positive. Although I have only asked a small amount of people as I only pitched to a small group of people i.e. my peers and the publisher.

Here I asked the audience “Was all required information well communicated?” The majority of the people I asked voted with the second choice which was the majority. The rest of the people I asked ranged from All the information to some of the information was well communicated.

The graph denotes to us that the results I have receive here is fairly positive as most people I asked went with the majority of information was well communicated.

Conclusion/Areas to Develop or Improve

From all the feedback that I was given from my pitch, I have gained and learned that in order to improve on the pitch of my new music magazine “Beats”, I will need to:

• Speak clearer and louder so that the audience and publisher can hear what I am trying to sell and that the video camera picks up what I am saying.• Amend the marketing costs on the budget which are unrealistic.• As well as marketing my magazine on social media, I could use posters, create an official website, and advertise on publisher’s website.• Avoid using terms like “stuff” broaden my media language.

Based on the feedback given through my survey I have learned and gained a lot of things to improve and develop upon in the future. These were:

One question asked “Was there any areas of the magazine production that you think I need to improve upon in the future? The information tells me many things from the magazine production that I need to improve upon for future pitches. For example one person said that I need to look and address the audience more than looking at my notes. To make improvements on this I will need to believe in my product and myself.

Secondly, I need to work on is the data in my profit graph as one person said they thought it was unrealistic. Other areas I need to work on is the editing of the front cover and double page spread designs e.g. the stroke effect around the barcode is too thick, the pug promotion is clashing with the guitar, the font styles for the cover lines and main headline are not suitable.

Another question asked “Do you have any other questions about my pitch? The information tells me many improvements that I should consider to improve my pitch for the future. For example I need to consider introducing other marketing strategies not just social media, maybe posters, billboards, leaflets etc
