ORIGINATE IDEAS

Page 2: Lo1
Page 3: Lo1

This idea would focus on the emotions portrayed in the song as a lot are put forward. The song would make everyone feel differently so my plan is to ask around and see how everyone is effected by the song.

The locations of this video are going to change as I don’t want the whole video shot in one place due to viewers losing interest. Looking at the original video the locations change a lot as well. I love the idea of filming in large open places as the song has a lonely feel to it and showing how the character is alone in a large space would exaggerate the feeling and make it clear to the viewer.

I’d also like to film in derelict places to show how the character feels abandoned. After looking at different derelict places the best two are Fairmile Asylum in Oxfordshire and Colthrop Paper Mill near thatcham.

The idea of backtracking came from research of many music videos. I’d like to show how the character got to the loneliness they are now feeling through flash backs after seeing something that bought the memory along. This will keep the viewer interested as they would want to understand the character as much as possible.

Due to the sadness of this song I’d like to keep the video slow as I felt that a fast moving video would show joy and excitement. I’d like to keep the lighting light as this creates the look of peace which would contrast to the look of sadness.

After researching other videos I’ve decided for the videos main character won’t be a member of the band so it appears the band are singing about someone else, this would show how they understand how the character is feeling and want to help, hopefully this will make the viewer sympathise for the character as well.

Emotional Side to the Song

Page 4: Lo1

This video wouldn’t just focus on the narrative of the song but also the cover band and how the video is made. Behind the scenes videos can be really popular as it shows what the bands really like instead of the characters they often play. I’d like this video to be shot in a similar way to Nina Nesbitt’s video for ‘Stay out’.

The locations of the majority of the video will depend on what the band are doing at the time as I don’t want the video to look planned so I want everything to be natural but part of the video that is narrative will be again similar to my previous idea and be shot in large open spaces or derelict buildings.

I’d like the video to be a mixture of reality and narrative as I feel the viewer would keep watching to know the character and the band more.

I have chosen to do my first idea and focus on the emotions shown in the song although I’d like to incorporate some reality of the band in due to wanting the bands sympathy towards the character to show. I’d like to film the band recording the music and although I mentioned not wanting the band members to be the main characters after watching music videos which have the members in I feel this wouldn’t affect the emotions portrayed.

a) I really like it!b) It’s good.c) It’s good but I don’t this it will work.d) I don’t really like it

I don’t really understand the reason behind the location. In the 8th shot I don’t understand why there’s a girl in the shot.I like it.I think it should start off with the studio.I think the band should be in more.

Yeah, it all seems lonely and depressing.Yeah nicely.Yes definitelyYeah, both slow movingYeah both sad.Yeah, I doYeah, but promote it to the right channelYeah YeahYeah

What are your first impressions of my idea?

Is there anything I could improve?

Do you think it goes a long with the lyrics?

Do you think it would work in the music video industry?

Survey and Peer Feedback

My target audience are indie music fans. From what youcan see would it fit in with my target audience?

My target age is between 12 and 26. From what you can see would it fit in with my target age?

If not, how do you think I could adapt it to fit?

How creative do you think my idea is?

Does my idea fit with the codes and conventions of music videos?

Yeah, I doYeah, DefinitelyYeah sureYesYeah

No, 15 to 26Yeah18 and aboveYeahYeah

Change your target age. It’s the song that’s wrong for the age I think.

Very mainstream, should have something exciting that no-one expects.Yeah it was really good that you’ve bought in musical instruments.Yeah I like the different shots you useIt’s really creative. It looks quite common but I think I’d enjoy watching it YeahYeah definitelyYeah SureYeah

After hearing opinions from my feedback I’m pleased with what I’ve heard as the majority is really positive with only a few negative remarks.

One point I heard was how they didn’t understand my location, after describing my reasons behind my choice they did mention how it made a lot more sense although this may confuse my viewers as I won’t be there to describe the location and I want it to be clear therefore I will look over my location choice and maybe think about changing it.

The two shot on my 8th slide confused one of the people I interviewed as they didn’t understand the point behind the girl being there in the back although I won’t be changing this due to wanting to show the separation between the couple and I’d like to be there singing.

My forth question asking if my music video would work in the music video industry was really positive and my second answer about promoting it to the right channel and audience led to my next question about would my video fit with my target audience again with positive outcomes so when selling my video on I will have to look at what channels indie fans enjoy and look at where I can promote the video to.

After hearing from my feedback I think I’ll have to take a look at my target age as a few didn’t agree with my choice. Although I don’t agree with the comment about it being 18 and over I do agree with the ages being 15 to 26.

Although I got a few comments about the video being to mainstream, I really like the idea and feel when its filmed and edited it won’t look mainstream at all.

Analysis of Idea Development after Feedback

Page 13: Lo1

After listening to my feedback my intended audience age has changed a bit from my original ages of 12 to 26 to 16 to 26, although it’s not too much of a jump I think it will be easier to promote this video for these ages as after research the target audience for indie music is usually around 16 to 26 with only a few exceptions.

After researching Lucy Rose’s target audience and reading comments made by fans on YouTube the majority of her fans are female therefore the majority of my audience watching my music video will probably be female as well.

When looking at the socio-economics and demographics as it’s a music video you wouldn’t get a certain wealth or level to watch as there is something to suit everyone, although looking at my target age the majority of my viewers would be students or have lower ranking jobs.

Research into Competitors

After looking into other music videos my main competitors are other indie, folk, alternative and rock videos.

After watching these music videos shown I understand that there are a large number of videos shot in the same way as I hope to do myself. Although this means my target audience would enjoy the video due to be filmed and edited in a similar way it also means that my video wouldn’t stand out in the industry.

Page 18: Lo1

Looking at the indie charts there are a lot of other genres mixed into the charts, for example songs like Good Time by Owl City. ‘Good Time’ is aimed at a different target audience to the audience my music video will be aimed at as ‘Good time’ is aimed more towards pop but due to being produced and directed by Declan Whitebloom an independent producer and director this video is classed as Indie as well.

Skills to Carry Out This Project

Page 21: Lo1

During the production of my music video there is a large amount of management to partake in. Due to working alongside a band for this music video I will have to make sure everything keeps on track and stays organised as I will be responsible for the band during the times of filming. I will also have to make sure the filming times are okay with myself and the 5 members of the band which can be tricky with 6 different timetables and schedules to work around.

Production management requirements

Page 22: Lo1

Due to my music video being to an Indie song I would need it to be appropriate for indie music fans, although due to it being indie music it does mean I have a little more freedom than I would if I were to be making a rock or hip hop video for example but there are things that would still not be appropriate not including things like:

Too much violenceo It’s very uncommon for violence to occur in an indie music video therefore I will not include it in

mine for this point and also it not fitting with the lyrics or the nature of the song. No explicit imagery No illegal activity outside of the context
