Instead, he joined the steering group which helped form DGHP in 2003. His work with the DMC keeps him busy: “I have been involved since the beginning. “I am really proud of the progress DGHP has made in the time I’ve been on the DMC. Being involved with something you can be proud of really makes a difference and I really enjoy my work with the organisation too.” Sam was born in Lanarkshire but spent his early years in Wamphray. He returned to Lanarkshire to continue his family traditions of supporting Motherwell Football Club and working in the coal mines. “I left school on the Friday and on the Monday I started in the coal mines, where I worked for 15 years.” Sam then returned to the region to work with the Forestry Commission, where he stayed for 30 years. He says: “I loved that job. I just loved being outside working. It’s like a whole different world from being in the coal mines. I really enjoyed the feeling of being outdoors. “It was a different work environment. You came across so many weird and wonderful bits of weather and it was just great.” Sam has been married to his wife Elizabeth for 50 years and they have two sons. The couple celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this year. Sam enjoys gardening in his spare time and is particularly pleased with his flowers this year: “I like looking after my garden and just pottering away out the back.” He spends any other spare time he has with his three grandchildren. He admits the state of local council houses was one of the main reasons he first got involved with the steering group, and later with DGHP. “The houses were in an awful condition. DGHP, or what would become DGHP, promised that they would do all the houses up and make them better places to live. “I got involved because I was interested in making sure these houses were improved. The DMC was an opportunity for me to keep this going.” He says meeting people and making new friends with members from the other DMCs is a bonus to being involved with the committee. “The DMCs do a lot and we’re doing really well just now. I’d like to encourage more young people to get involved with DGHP. As soon as you become involved, you really find out all about what they do. Then you really do become part of DGHP.” ANNANDALE & ESKDALE DMC AWARDS COMMUNITY PRIDE FUNDING In the Annandale & Eskdale area, the following groups and organisations have received Community Pride Funding: Gretna TARA – This community involvement project has received £1,385 to assist with two of their projects. The first is at the Empire Court Allotments, where some of the money will be used to purchase tools, seeds and a tools store. The second project will use the funding to pave a part of Loanwath Road. Royal Burgh of Annan Juvenile Pipe Band – The band has been awarded £5,000 to go towards paying for tuition, uniforms and equipment. It is hoped that the funding will increase the number of local youngsters having the opportunities to learn a traditional Scottish instrument irrespective of financial demands. Upper Annandale Youth Support Group – The group has been given £1,600 to install a new energy efficient gas boiler in the drop in centre based in Moffat. The £1,600 Community Pride funding will contribute to the total cost of the installation. Lockerbie RBLS Pipe Band – The band has received £1,000 of funding to upgrade and renew uniforms and instruments especially with regard to junior members. Hoddom and Ecclefechan Community Council – The community council has been awarded £4,515 of funding to purchase the area of land known as The Haggs at the north of Ecclefechan to install some swings as part of the Haggs Improvement Project. The Annandale & Eskdale DMC are in the final stages of distributing their Community Pride funding. The money has been awarded to a number of worthy local causes including local bands, who have received £6,000 between them. The rest of the fund has been split between 3 community groups across the area to fund improvements for local people.
