The Big Idea

Broadband networks must play a central role in achieving our

energy- efficiency and environmental goals.

Verizon: 21st Century Solutions for Energy Challenges

1.  Making our network more efficient.

2.  Using alternative sources of energy to power our network.

3.  Looking at ways to save energy at our facilities, with our fleets.

4.  Practicing lifecycle management of our equipment.

Broadband & Telecommuting/Teleconferencing

The average teleworker saves 62 hours in commuting time $1,201 in commuting costs and 1,751 pounds of emissions not dispersed

into the environment. - Telework Exchange Study, March 11th, 2008

SAVES: 600M Tons & 199.8M Tons

Office-to-office teleconferencing applications have fundamentally changed. And new broadband speeds allow workers to have a real virtual

presence from home too. For example, in 2007, Verizon began offering FiOS symmetrical internet access with speeds up to 20/20 megs.

Broadband & Paperless Downloads

If 50% of the 2.5 billion DVD’s and VHS tapes rented per year were delivered via Video on Demand, it would reduce

energy equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 200,000 households.

- Consumer Electronics Association Study, 2007

In today’s fast-paced world, consumers won’t wait. With new broadband speeds, they don’t have to.

Downloading music, video, books now saves time and energy.

SAVES: 67.2M Tons

Broadband & Smart Transportation

By mapping out routes UPS saves 28.5 million miles annually which results in roughly 3 million gallons of gas and CO2

emissions reductions of 31,000 metric tons.

Action Agenda

What we know: Broadband can play a greater role in facilitating energy efficiency

We need public policies to speed:

 More ubiquitous deployment

Development of innovative applications which promote energy efficient behaviors

Measurement – mechanisms in place to demonstrate the impact
