Interdisciplinary LLC, we salute you for your exemplary work in programming! RA Jordan Liderman coordinated a rape and sexual assault awareness program with representatives from Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) and Northeastern’s University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS), which more than 30 residents attended. During the program many students opened up about personal experiences related to the topic, while hearing stories of survival, empowerment and selfcare from the panel of experts. Also, throughout the month of November the residents of the Smennedy Street community were encouraged to submit artwork for the “What is Smennedy?” mural project. The designs were to be inspired by all of the diversity our residents bring to the community and the chosen design was sketched and painted during a communitywide event on December 3 rd . During the event a specialist and historian of the Black Arts Movement from Roxbury, Gary Rickson, came to speak about the significance of urban murals and, specifically, about the efforts to preserve and remember the historic murals that capture the culture of Roxbury. RA Spotlight: Olivia Gonsalves

Olivia Gonsalves, you are our RASpotlight! Congratulations! Weknow that you are not serving inthe RA role this semester as youare studying aboard, but wewanted to acknowledge all of yourefforts from the first semester! Asa first-‐year RA on the SmennedyStreet team, Olivia dedicated atremendous amount of energy into

bringing much of the Community Service LLCprogramming to life. Together with the rest of hercolleagues in Smennedy, and as a co-‐op in theNortheastern Center of Community Service, she has

been at the heart of many of our area’s most successfulinitiatives and took it upon herself to raise the stakeseven higher. After agreeing to present to the entire RAstaff about community service, service-‐learning andphilanthropy during the November Workshop, Liv putthose words into action and launched a campus-‐wideprogram to support one of Boston’s largest holidaycharity events, Christmas In The City. The program hasnot only raised a significant amount, financially, for theimpoverished and homeless youth of Boston, it alsoraised awareness and created a great call-‐to-‐actionamong the RA and resident populations on campus. Herhard work and passion has not gone unnoticed and asshe studies abroad this semester, she leaves somemassive shoes to fill.

Excellent Past LLC ProgramsOxfam Hunger Banquet: As many students on campus recently learned, not all obscenities have four letters. Recently theRAs from five LLCs on campus, in collaboration with the Social Justice Resource Center (SJRC), held an Oxfam HungerBanquet to bring awareness to the famine currently wreaking havoc in Somalia and the horn of Africa. The idea for theprogram came during RA training when RAs were asked to form groups and explore ways their LLCs intersected andinteracted with others. Several RAs began discussing the importance of global awareness, and the idea of working with atopic that ties together multiple interest areas easily led to the Somalia famine.

Through a semester’s worth of hard work, the RAs secured funding from the SJRC and were able to offer participants of theprogram a small taste of what it meant to be hungry. Under direction of the evening’s emcee Naomi Thompson Hall,Associate Director of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, participants were encouraged to reflect on their ownlives and the privileges they were given by living in America. Led in a discussion and lecture by Dr. Denise Horn, notedprofessor and author on globalization and international affairs, the participants were able to explore the political, economic, and global issues that have culminated in this famine. The evening was a true success, and many students expressed interestin learning more about what they could do to make a difference on the famine’s impact. Collaboration is a most powerfultool in the fight for global awareness, and our RAs have proven just that.

WVF Honors: The RAs of West Village F have been all around town, treating their residents to all that Northeastern and thesurrounding Boston area has to offer. They traveled to the Museum of Science to see the Pompeii exhibit, which featuresitems on loan from the Pompeii excavation in Italy. This program provided students the opportunity to be exposed toanother part of the world that is difficult to get to and Pompeian life and culture. They also took residents to the CareerServices’ Career Fair. Residents had the opportunity to participate in resume review and interviewing skills prior toparticipating in interviews. They also took students to a program sponsored by Spiritual Life on Laughter Meditation, wherestudents learned about the therapeutic effects that laughter has on the body and techniques on how to distress.

December had the RAs taking residents to The Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker. They were introduced to a renowned pieceof music and theatre that has been considered a holiday classic for years. Residents had an opportunity to learn through adiscussion led by Professor Strukus before the performance about the compositional aspects of the masterpiece and theculture of ballet. Lastly, the residents were treated to a dinner in Chinatown at The Q Restaurant. Professor Hua Dong, andinternational students from China joined the residents for dinner and cultural dialogue at a traditional Chinese Hot Potrestaurant. After dinner Professor Dong intrigued residents with a discussion of the Dialogue he would be leading thissummer in China. Also, Professor Dong led a brief tour around Chinatown and explained true Chinese culture.

Willis: In a joint venture between Creative Expressions and Community Service LLCs, the RAs put on “Cards for Kids.”Residents got together to create holiday cards for children in local hospitals.

Criminal Justice: Jay Brooks, the CJ Resident Assistant, surveyed his wing in the beginning of the year and discovered severalof his residents are looking to join the law enforcement field. Lead by Sergeant Maloney and Officer Lindsey, residentstoured the NUPD station from top to bottom. With their all access pass to the station, students engaged in conversationsaround law enforcement and the difference between local law enforcement and law enforcement at institutions of higherlearning. The biggest take-‐away from the tour was the understanding of the role of an NUPD Officer. All Northeastern PoliceOfficers are committed to service and providing a safe community for both on and off campus residents.

Computer Science: On Sunday December 4th the residents of the CCIS community were brought together by their RAs JeanNei and Kotaro Taniguchi, for a presentation on the history and development of one of the world’s most successful gamingempires, Nintendo. After the presentation the gamers were given the chance to compete in a tournament of retro Nintendogames (1985 to 2001) for a chance to win a ticket to PAX East 2012.

Community Service: On both Saturday December 3rd and December 10th the residents of the Community Service LLCvolunteered to stock shelves, prepare food and serve lunch to the homeless and impoverished residents of Boston, alongwith their RAs Ally Seigel and Theo Matt, at the Boston Area Food Bank. The small but mighty group left campus shortly aftersunrise and spent the day meeting, interacting with and serving the greater Boston community.
