What is a Favela?

The term favela comes from the Morro de Favela hillside in Rio de Janeiro, where freed slaves first established a community of squatters in the 1890s.

Favelas surround every major city in Brazil Many people have no electricity or running water They are often right next to wealthy neighbourhoods
