Page 2: Liverpool Empire Autumn Guide 2011

Hello and a very

warm welcome to

your Summer/Autumn

season at the Liverpool

Empire. I’d like to take

this opportunity to

introduce myself as

the new General

Manager of this magnificent theatre. I am

thrilled to be working at such an iconic venue

in the nationally and internationally renowned

cultural city of Liverpool. This new guide

showcases the eclectic range of top class

entertainment we have coming up here at the

Empire. We are proud to host some of the best

in musical theatre, comedy, opera, dance and

music currently touring within our programme

of events.

One of this summer’s highlights is, without

doubt, Legally Blonde The Musical - the first

ever UK tour of this sparkling, Olivier award

winning show, premieres right here in Liverpool

in July. I am sure this is going to be one of the

hottest tickets in town this summer, so don’t

miss out on the opportunity to see this fantastic

West End smash hit.

Our Autumn season definitely kicks off in

style with Queen and Ben Elton’s musical

phenomenon We Will Rock You, which visits us

for three weeks in September. Tickets for these

hit West End shows are selling fast so book now

to avoid disappointment. We’re also delighted

to be bringing even more high profile touring

shows to you in 2012, with Sister Act, South

Pacific, Spamalot and Dirty Dancing all on

sale now. Further details on all these shows

and many more can be found within this

brochure or on our website.

On behalf of the whole team, thank you for

your continued support of the Liverpool Empire,

and we hope to welcome you to the theatre

in the very near future.

Best wishes,

Andrew Rawlinson

11 OLIVIER AWARDS

Original poster concept designed by Aka. Photo Uli Webber.

For the first time ever, the West End & Broadway sensation, 2011

Olivier Award winner (Best New Musical) and winner of Best New Musical Whatsonstage.com Awards, Legally Blonde The Musical

comes to Liverpool. Based on the hit movie starring

Reese Witherspoon, this critically acclaimed new musical is

created by a top-of-their-class creative team, led by Tony

Award-winning director and Olivier Award-nominated choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray).

College sweetheart and homecoming queen Elle Woods doesn’t

take no for an answer. So when her boyfriend, Warner, dumps

her for someone serious, Elle puts down the credit card, hits

the books, and heads for Harvard Law School. Legally Blonde The Musical will take you from the social whirl of California

Campus life to Harvard’s Halls of Justice with the brightest

new heroine (and of course, her Chihuahua, Bruiser).

This all singing, all dancing, feel-good musical comedy will be the

highlight of your year and the most fashionable ticket in town.

The verdict? This much fun shouldn’t be legal!

ONE DREAM, ONE VISION, ONE SMASH HIT ROCKS LIVERPOOL!

The worldwide smash-hit musical by Queen and Ben Elton makes its

Liverpool Debut from Tue 6 Sep for 3 weeks only! Since 2002

over 11 million theatregoers in 17 countries have been thrilled to

see this awe-inspiring production. With 24 of Queen’s biggest

hits delivered in a show that boasts the scale and spectacle that

marked the band’s legendary live performances, this theatrical

phenomenon is not to be missed!

When it became news some years back that one of Britain’s most

phenomenally successful comedy writers, Ben Elton, was teaming

up with legends of rock, Queen, for a musical, we all wondered what

such a unique collaboration would turn out. Especially when screen

icon Robert de Niro became so impressed after attending the

original workshop that his company, Tribeca, came on board.

The result was a new chapter in theatre history - We Will Rock You -

a rock ‘theatrical’ which defied all comparisons and has gone on

to become a global smash hit.

Starring Jenny Douglas BBC’s Over the Rainbow finalist, Leon

Lopez Brookside/West End star, Ian Reddington EastEnders/

Coronation Street, Ashley J Russell BBC’s I’d Do Anything

finalist & Noel Sullivan Hear’say/Grease.

Includes 24 of Queen’s greatest hits:

Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Another One Bites The Dust, We Are The Champions, We Will Rock You.

THE BARBER OF SEVILLERossini’s eternally sunny comedy is the perfect introduction

to opera. Filled with classic arias such as ‘Largo al factotum’

this opera is a ray of sunlight that has uplifted audiences

the world over for almost two centuries.

Sung in English with surtitles in English.

DON GIOVANNIMozart’s opera is as rich and complex as the character of the

Don himself – it is chilling and beautiful, comic and dramatic

with one of the most powerful finales in opera.

Sung in Italian with surtitles in English.

KATYA KABANOVAKatya Kabanova is the story of a young woman trapped in

a loveless marriage in a stultifying village. Janác̆ek uses every
