Installation via Live USB

A live USB is a USB flash drive or a USB external hard disk drive containing a full operating system which

can be booted.In contrast to live CDs, the data contained on the booting device can be changed and

additional data stored on the same device. This allows for live USBs to be used as personal storage, as it

allows a user to carry their preferred operating system, applications, and configuration as well as personal

files with them, making it easy to share a single system between multiple users.

Making Of Live USB In UBUNTU

UBUNTU in its default conatins USB start up disk creator so need to install additional softwares and other

things and is very easy to use.The below tutorial wil show you how to make a Live USB using UBUNTU.

Making Of Live USB In IT@SCHOOL

IT@School doesnt have a default start up disk creator so we need to install some additional

softwares they are :

1. UNetbootin

2. 7zip

3. mtools

UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer) is a cross-platform utility that can create Live USB

systems and can load a variety of system utilities or install various Linux distributions and other

operating systems without a CD.

Unetbootin needs some additional software to work,they are 7zip and mtools so we need to install

them first.

STEPS: UBUNTU

1. First you need an iso image of the operating system or a source disc in the drive.

2. Now select USB startup disk creator from System>Administration>USB Startup Disk Creator

3. By clicking the Usb disk creator we will get a window like this

4. Here the source file is in the cd drive or can give the image saved in the harddisk by clicking other andgiving the path.

5. The 4GB pendrive is shown in the disk to use ,we can format it there itself.

6. (1) Select the USB diskto use,

(2) Select the option Stored in reserved extra space and adjust the slider to set capacity to use,

(3) Click the Make Startup Diskbutton and it starts installing the os to the Pendrive

7. Once the installation is complete, remove the CD, restart your computer and set your boot menu or BIOS

to boot from the pendrive.

STEPS: IT@SCHOOL

1. Download Unetbootin software form http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

2. Click on Download for linux option you will get a BIN file

3. Open sysnaptic package manager from System>Administration>Syanaptic Package Manager

4. Now we need to install two more additional softwares so as to make UNetbootin work

5. We need to install 7zip and mtools from synaptic package manager.

6. Click on the search button and type 7zip and clicksearch

7. Mark it for installation and click on the appy button

8. Similarly install mtools too..

9. Now open terminal and type the following commands

1. Become root user by typing su

2. Change directory to where the software is being kept using cd

3. Give permisson to execute by typing chmod +x 'software name' -(Without Qoutes)

4. final steptype ./'software name' -(Without Qoutes)

10. When we type ./'Softwae Name' the software runs and a new window of UNetbootin opens

11. To use Unetbootin you need to go through six steps.

1. Select the distribution

2. Select the version.

3. Whether you have an iso image on the harddisk or a cd image on the drive

4. Give path to the iamge

5. Select USB drive in type

6. To give path of the drive type fdisk -l as root from the terminal the last portion or th highlighted

portion in the screenshot gives the path of the USB drive

12.Now clickok

13. Now reboot and boot from the Pend drive/Flash Drive
