A great community sharing activity. Wednesday 17 June onwards If there is one thing that makes me mad, it’s litter. Most of the time I’m a pretty positive guy but one aspect of modern life that really gets my goat is the way some of us have forgotten what it means to be a Tidy Kiwi. These days a worryingly large percent of the population thinks it's okay to throw half eaten meals out car windows, leave rubbish on beaches and bottles in the gutter. Not only does this mindlessness soil our town, it practically encourages others to litter, gives visitors the impression we're a bunch of slobs and comes at a price. Council spends around $130,000 a year on picking up litter! If litter bothers you as much as it bothers me, let's do something about it. Instead of waiting for Nelmac to turn up, let's pick up those bottles and cans and all that fast food packaging ourselves. The way I see it, the fastest way to bring back the Tidy Kiwi mindset is for those of us who care to clean up after the clowns who don’t. The more of us who do so, the more normal picking up litter will become, the more likely others will do it too and, in time, the less socially acceptable littering will be. One of the reasons people litter is that they don't give a stuff about Nelson and they don't think anyone else really does either. Let's show them they're wrong and make Nelson a nicer place in the process. South Island Masters Games entries open New bus shelters around town Eagle-eyed users of Nelson’s public transport network will have spotted a few new bus shelters around the city. This year two new shelters have been installed along Waimea Road, one opposite Russell Flats and the other between Beatson and Quarantine Roads. Plans for further bus shelters are in the pipeline with Annesbrook Drive suggested as a future shelter location. In deciding where shelters should go, consideration is given to proximity to an existing shelter, potential use numbers and the available footpath width. On average, Council has installed two new shelters per year for the last ten years, in response to requests from people who have previously had to wait for a bus exposed to high sunshine or rain. Coupled with an improved bus service, the shelters seem to be achieving the goal of increased use of public transport and patronage continues to climb. Nelson City Council has received positive feedback from local residents and bus users saying how pleased they are with the new shelters.
