INTRODUCTORY RITES

INTRODUCTION

Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

Good morning brothers and sisters in Christ!

We celebrate today the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a proclamation of Pope Pius IX who, on December 8, 1954, affirmed as a solemn dogma of our Christian faith the constant belief of the Church from ancient times that Mary, Chosen Mother of our Savior, received the benefits of salvation through the Merits of her Son Jesus and she was conceived free from the stain of Original Sin. With this, the Pope explicates the deep and full meaning of Sacred Scriptures that describes Mary as “full of grace”.

Beyond this marvelous grace of God, the Gospel highlights how the Blessed Mother corresponds to the privilege given her by consistent and constant affirmation of herself as servant and instrument of the divine will, God initiated a big favor for her and she magnifies this favor with her continuing “Yes”.

Today also, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the solemn blessing and inauguration of the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary by the Most Reverend James TG Hayes (of the Society of Jesus), founder of the Ateneo de Cagayan and the first Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro during the Marian Year 1954. The Chapel was constructed in the early fifties by the late Fr Andrew Cervini (of the Society of Jesus), Rector of then Ateneo de Cagayan from 1949-1956. It was renamed to University Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8, 2014, Feast of the Nativity of Mary, during Xavier University’s Ruby Jubilee.

In the spirit of thanksgiving, with our celebrant Most Reverend Antonio J Ledesma (of the Society of Jesus and Doctor of Divinity) and with our concelebrants, the Jesuit priests of Loyola House community, let us all stand to sing our entrance hymn.

A reading from the Book of Genesis

After the man, Adam, had eaten of the tree, the LORD God called to the man and asked him, “Where are you?”He answered, “I heard you in the garden;but I was afraid, because I was naked,so I hid myself.”Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked? You have eaten, then, from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!”The man replied, “The woman whom you put here with meshe gave me fruit from the tree, and so I ate it.”The LORD God then asked the woman,“Why did you do such a thing?”The woman answered, “The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it.”

Then the LORD God said to the serpent:

The Lord is with you.”But she was greatly troubled at what was saidand pondered what sort of greeting this might be.Then the angel said to her,“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”

But Mary said to the angel,“How can this be,
