Getting to Know Literacy Learners

• In order to effectively teach my students, I must develop an understanding of their background knowledge and interest.

• The use of cognitive and non-cognitive assessments allow me to get to know my students in order to create a literate environment.

Getting to Know Literacy Learners

Getting to know our students allows us to see the world where our students come from and to learn more about who we are teaching (Laureate Education Inc., n.d. a.).

Selecting Texts

Effective teachers select appropriate and engaging texts that appeal to their students (Laureate Education Inc., n.d. b.).

In order to meet students needs, classroom texts should be:

-engaging

-at the student’s ability level

-something that connects to students’ lives

Selecting TextsI chose the following texts for my unit on Pumpkins:

Life Cycle of a Pumpkin by Ron Fridell and Patricia Walsh is an informational text that introduces students to a pumpkin’s life cycle from a pumpkin seed, to growth, and harvest. This text is expository non- fiction story and tells the sequence of events in a pumpkin’s life cycle (Tompkins, 2010). This text falls under the linguistic informational quadrant of the Literacy Matrix (Laureate Education Inc., n.d. b).

Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington is a narrative text about a young boy that plants a pumpkin seed and observes it while it grows. This book shows the full cycle of a pumpkin’s life, while telling a narrative story. This text falls under the semiotic narrative quadrant of the Literacy Matrix (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.b.).

I chose the Leveled Reader, Landon’s Pumpkins by Vera Ogden Bakker, from readinga-z.com as an online text. This story is a realistic fiction piece that tells the story of Landon, who is working with his father to plant, grow, and harvest pumpkins in order to practice his carving skills. This online text includes vocabulary terms, phonics strategies, word work, and fluency resources to use in correlation with the text. This text falls in the linguistic narrative quadrant of the Literacy Matrix (Laureate Education Inc., n.d. b.).

Selecting Texts

The Literacy Matrix is a two dimensional construct for analyzing and selecting texts (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.b.)

The Literacy Matrix is a tool that I can use in my classroom to ensure that I have a variety of texts available to my students

Interactive Perspective

The Interactive Perspective addresses the Instructional Strategies that I use for teaching my students how to read (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.c.)

Strategic Processing helps students become strategic processors through the use of :

-phonics -phonemic awareness -comprehension -fluency -vocabulary (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.c.)

Page 8: Literate Environment Analysis

Strategic Processing teaches students to be reflective and self-regulated in order to become independent readers (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.c.)

-Guided Reading -Choral Reading

-Word Study

Critical Perspective

The Critical Perspective allows students to critically examine texts (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.d.)

My students are able to:Examine texts from multiple perspectivesCritically evaluate textsJudge the validity of the texts

Page 10: Literate Environment Analysis

Response Perspective

The Response Perspective provides literacy experiences that effect students’ personal and emotional levels (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.e.)

This perspective supports students as they engage with texts in life-changing ways (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.e.)
