When you want to find the plot, you look for the events of the story. What does the story talk about.

Example

It was a drab rainy day in France. I woke up with an extreme pain in my stomach . I called my mom, and she rushed me to the hospital. The doctor said that I needed surgery.

Plot is about action so we know that the author woke up in pain went to the hospital and the doctor said the he/she needed surgery

Characterization

Characterization- is the way the author describe s the character in the story. A character can be described by: appearance, words, actions, thoughts and interactions with other characters.

Example

Ding, Ding, Ding! The sound of the church bell rang. Everyone took their seat, except this young boy that was screaming asking for a lollipop. His mom tried to calm him, but the boy rejected his mom’s words. He insisted on having the lollipop. Finally, an old women got a lollipop out of her purse and hand ed it to the boy .

From those two sentences you can tell that the boy is stubborn.

We know that the old lady is nice because she was nice enough to give the lollipop to the boy.

Point of view

Point of view- is the way the author allows you to “see” and “hear” what’s going on in the story. There are different points of view that the author can use.

Point of view

1st Person 2nd Person 3rd person

3rd Limited 3rd Omniscient

Page 6: Literary Elements By Mais Abbassi. Definition Plot- The events of the story. Characterization- The way the author describes the characters in the.

Point of View- 1st person

First person point of view is used when a character narrates the story with- I, me, my, mine, us , and we, in his or her speech. The advantage of this point of view is that you get to hear the thoughts of the narrator and see the world depicted in the story through his or her eyes

Example

It was a drab rainy day in Jordan. I woke up with an extreme pain in my stomach . I called my mom, and she rushed me to the hospital. The doctor said that I needed surgery.

If You by attention ever a sentence or two the author chooses I. which means this paragraph was write in 1st

person point of view

Page 7: Literary Elements By Mais Abbassi. Definition Plot- The events of the story. Characterization- The way the author describes the characters in the.

Point of View- 2nd person

Second person point of view. In which the author uses you, it is rare; authors seldom speak directly to the reader.

Example

You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost. They tell you your blue skies fade to gray. They tell you passion’s gone away, and you don’t know carrying on. You stand in the line just to hit new low, you’re faking a smile with the coffee to go. They tell you your life been way off line, you’re falling to pieces ever time, and you don’t need no carrying on .

If you realize the author uses you a lot as he is directly talking to you that’s what we call 2nd person point of view.

Page 8: Literary Elements By Mais Abbassi. Definition Plot- The events of the story. Characterization- The way the author describes the characters in the.

Point of View-3rd person (Limited)

Third person limited point of view is a method of storytelling in which the narrator knows only the thoughts and feelings of a single character while other characters are presented only externally

Example

This Anselmo had been a good guide and he could travel wonderfully in the mountains. Robert Jordan could walk well enough himself and he knew from following him since before daylight that the old man could walk him to death. Robert Jordan trusted the man, Anselmo, so far, in everything except judgment. He had not yet had an opportunity to test his judgment, and, anyway, the judgment was his own responsibility.

The author he describes only one person feeling and thought we know that Robert felt trusted and responsible for his own judgment

Page 9: Literary Elements By Mais Abbassi. Definition Plot- The events of the story. Characterization- The way the author describes the characters in the.

Point of View- 3rd person (Omniscient)

Third person- Omniscient in which the thought of every character are open to the reader.

ExampleLittle Red Riding Hood opened the door to Grandma’s room and stepped inside. She sniffed lightly. There was a strange smell in the room that she didn’t like. She squinted at Grandma. Why was the room so dark?

“Hello, my dear. Come closer.” Grandma patted the bedspread beside her.Grandma’s voice was huskier than normal. Well, she was sick, after all.

Little Red moved closer to the bed until she could see Grandma. What was wrong with Grandma’s eyes?

“What big eyes you have today, Grandma.”“All the better to see

you with, my dear.”

As you all know the story Little Red Ridding the author gives the feeling and thoughts of each characters in the story. So we know it’s 3rd person Omniscient.

Setting

Setting is when and where and when the story takes place. (place, season, time, morning, or night)

Example

It was a drab snowy day in France. I woke up with an extreme pain in my stomach . I called my mom, and she rushed me to the hospital. The doctor said that I needed surgery.

So here we know it in France and we also know it’s in winter because of the snow

Theme

Theme is the message of the story the author is trying to infer to the reader.

Example

It was my first time cheating on a test. The teacher had caught me and send me to the office. The called my parents and had let them know of my cheating. When I got home my mom didn’t look at me in the eye, and she didn’t use her eager voice that she always uses when I get home. From that moment I known that I disappointed my parent and promised myself to never cheat again.
