Present A Unique Two-Day Workshop This highly original, hands-on workshop is designed for all human service practitioners and activists who want to explore creative approaches to addressing disadvantage, discrimination and inequality. The facilitators are Dr Jennifer Lehmann and Russell Deal OAM, both social work educators and practitioners with over 80 years’ experience between them. As passionate advocates for their field, Jennifer and Russell believe it is imperative that all human service practitioners continue to creatively confront issues of injustice, in whatever roles they are employed. This workshop is practical, skills-based and inspirational. Join us to explore a host of expressive possibilities for colourful and considered advocacy: create a cartoon, draft a letter to a newspaper, design a poster, write a memoir or short story, build a creative writing course for clients, construct a conversation-building card set, send a ‘message in a bottle’ to a politician, and more. • How do we practise advocacy within our own organisations? • How do we respectfully advocate on behalf of our clients? • What are some creative alternatives to try in the face of persistent structures that disadvantage and discriminate? • How do we skill-up our clients and our communities to advocate for themselves? • What roles can humour play in social change? Celebrating the expertise in the room, The Literary Advocate and Agitator will be built around the skills and experience of all participants. The workshop welcomes practitioners with backgrounds in community development, mental health support, counselling and therapy, family work, social action, consumer services, and environmental activism—come, agitate for change! Numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 30 participants.
