The year was 2006 and I was eager to know about
my surname.
I asked my grandfather and he told me our family came
from Yugoslavia.
Yugoslavia = Bosnia and Herzegovina + Croatia +
Macedonia + Montenegro + Serbia + Slovenia.
OnebutgreatanswercamefromCanada!
Gabriel was born in Slovakia and has been
living in Canada for a while. He told me Paulovic is a
patronymic.
Actually it is Paulovič, a Slavic name which is not
that common, but not rare either in the Eastern
Europe.
Patronymic
A patronymic is a name based on a first name of one's father or male ancestor.
Patronymic
The patronymic varies if the named one is a man or a woman.
Patronymic
Paulovič = Paulo + vič.Paulovičova = Paulo + vičova.
2012
I found many results pointing Paulovic family to Slovakia not Yugoslavia. I thought my grandpa was
quite wrong.
So I decided to do an Eurotrip on my holiday and visit Bratislava, the capital
of Slovakia, in order to know my ancestors.
But...
It happened that I had already set my backpack, bought my flights tickets,
my reservations, my itinerary and...
... someone sent my a link to the brother of my-
grandgrandgrandfather's history. And guess what?
My family came fromS L O V E N I A.
Slovenia≠
Slovakia
My grandfather was so right, and I, a stubborn,
missed the right country by 500km :(
I was so excited about visiting Bratislava that I
decided to go there anyway.
Bratislava, Slovakia.
ahoj! / hello!
Bratislava is the capital and the most important city of Slovakia with 450k+ inhabitants.
It's on both banks of Danube River, it's about 1 hour from Vienna and about 4 hours away from Budapest.
Bratislava's citizens are very kind and hospitable. The city is very cozy and very small, you get used to the city map in hours.
Bratislava Castle (Bratislavský hrad).
Bratislava Castle (Bratislavský hrad).
Slovak Radio's inverted-pyramid-shaped headquarters.
The national dish is halušky: potato dumplings with sheep cheese. It's usual to drink milk-based beverage with this.
Nový Most (New Bridge) across the Danube featuring a UFO-like tower restaurant.
Chuck Norris bridge.
Napoleon's Army Soldier
Paparazzi.
The experience worth. Bratislava is a great cozy
city, but I could not find any Paulovic there.
Next time your grandpa give you some advice trust it or you might be some kilometers wrong.
Thanks for listening to me.D'akujem!
