HYBRIDIZING NOTES: Over a period of years, we have embarked upon a hybridizing program to produce truly fertile jonquils. With the early discovery that Hillstar was fertile, we felt the strong potential for producing a fertile line by crossing Hillstar with Quick Step. A rather large group of varying colors resulted from this cross, the first of which has been named Perpetuation and is planned for introduction in 1996.
At the same time, it occurred that since Quick Step crossed with Triandrus produced excellent progeny, the same should be true for Hillstar. Therefore a number of crosses were made with Triandrus albus and with concolor. We were not disappointed. Beautiful- lemon shades of fragrant division 5 appearing flowers, along with reverse bicolors resulted. The first, a 5Y-W, was named American Family and is planned for future introduction. A wide range of progeny has come from Hillstar crossed with other divisions as well.
Limequilla was also found to be fertile, along with a number of Quickstep progeny (i.e. Pink Step). The fascinating thing about these, is that they set copious amounts of seed, similarly to the species. We are looking forward with keen anticipation to the Pink Step and Limequilla progeny. Hopefully, a few high quality pink and yellow Division 7's!
