new realitieswellness centre for recovering eating disorder patients
senior level thesis
The purpose of the proposed design is to create a safe and supportive social environ-
ment where people who are recovering from eating disorders can have an escape from
the pressures of society in a facility designed to aid the often long recovery process.

THE ESPLANADE
The new realities eating disorder recovery centre currently has two locations in To-ronto, both with a private counseling fo-cus. Currently, the facility refers patients to programs elsewhere in order to obtain other forms of therapy such as group cen-tered therapy. This is not only a system which lacks effi ciency and consistency, but the city of Toronto is heavily lacking in services aiding in the treatment of eating disorders.
The creation of an entire destination at the site of Berkeley Castle would allow for one all-encompassing destination. The wellness centre would be a single portion of the facility; one aimed towards patients who are past the early stages of recovery, and who would benefi t from the commu-nity based programs offered.

growth & restthe new realities program compares the recovery process of patients to that of the growth cycles of a tree. There are lush & rapid periods of growth, as well as slower pe-riods with periods of rest in between.
This concept was especially important in the programming of the spaces, with care-ful placement of rest spaces in between the spaces meant for different stages of growth.
implementation of greenresearch has proven that interaction with natural elements and plant life are vital to the recovery process and overall wellbeing. The in-tegration of a single vertical green element centrally in the space provides visual access to plant life from virtually every point in the building. This also acts as an inhabitable space which lends to the program and it breaks up sightlines in the otherwise open concept space providing a higher sense of privacy between spaces. The tower element is clad in a series of living wall panels, which helps im-prove air quality and the wellbeing of users. This element is the core of the space, and relates back to the initial concept of growth and rest, as it is an element which represents growth in various forms.

programming is a large focus of this project. The design process was entirely user based, and creating appropriate adjacencies and privacy levels be-
tween areas was imperative to the success of the design. The development of the program was entirely research based; deriving from a combination of
literary fi ndings, case studies, and most importantly, interviews.

the yoga studio is mirrorless as the purpose of this practice is to help develop a mindful connection with the body, breaking free from the perception of the body as a physical ornament. The circular form en-courages a circular gathering, rather than the typical studio layout of rows facing mirrors.

the intent of the model is to show the relationship of the tower detail with the fl oor plate and the rest of the build-ing. Semi-translucent walls allow for a better understand-ing of the relationship of the tower to the building’s south wall.

Through sketches, and later on, foam core scratch models, several solutions to maintaining both the balance of the chair and a pleasing aesthetic were tested and considered.
