Ac- cording to a facebook post, the family will announce details in the days to follow, and a fire has been started at his residence on Coldwater Reserve. It was easy to forget that Opie was famous... his casual & friendly demea- nour belied the success he'd achieved — as a painter, jewellery maker, stand- up comic, motivational speaker, and flute maker & player. His paintings, prints, gold & silver carved jewellery and flutes are in public & private col- lections across Canada & the US. Opie experienced living in the resi- dential school system, TB hospitaliza- tion, a prison term, and was a victim of abuse. He turned all that around, be- cause he wanted to be happy & produc- tive, and he applied himself intensely to his art. He was inspired by nature, real life experiences and legends. And he would go on to master not only painting & print-making but carving, instrument-making, music, and come- dy. Here at home, he also donated his work to many fundraising events in the community, attesting to his drive to help the causes he believed in. Opie has been prolific in his work. And his success in the wider art world continues to bring recognition to Interior First Nations art. [Editor: It's all the more poignant to- day, to see in my facebook page a 'friend re- quest' from Opie. But we were more face- to-face friends, for which I will always be honoured.
