Liquid Seaweed Extract
■ Biostimulant products based on seaweed extracts
■ Stimulation of root growth ■ Improvement of crop quality, yield and shelf life
The highest quality raw materials
■ Basfoliar® Kelp SL products are liquid biostimulants based
on naturally extracted seaweed.
■ The endemic alga Ecklonia maxima (kelp) is sustainably
sourced from the coastline of the South African cape where
conditions maximise the content of phyto-active substances.
■ Basfoliar® Kelp products are rich in phytohormones, amino
acids, vitamins and other important phyto-active substances.
■ Products are also rich in trace elements and with options to
be fortified with major elements, N, P and K.
Production process
Selective sustainable hand harvesting of the highest quality
kelp seaweed from the Cape, South Africa.
Extraction of kelp using cold-micronisation process to preserve
the integrity of phyto-active substances (commonly used chea-
per heat extraction denatures many of the phyto-hormones).
Unique standardisation of every batch to give a consistent
guaranteed concentration of 75 µg free IAA (Auxin)/l. Bio-assay conducted.
Optional fortification with additional nutrients to create range
of liquid products.
1st Step: Direct measurement of FREE Auxins.
Once both analyses are done, each batch is standardised according this information, ensuring product efficacy and consistency when used.
Cold extraction to preserve major active ingredients
2nd Step:Biological validation of effectiveness.

Effect of algae-phyto-hormones (auxins and cytokinins)
Benefits of kelp seaweed extracts
■ A unique ratio of the natural phyto-hormones auxin and
cytokinin to enhance root development.
■ The extraction process ensures full efficiency of the natural
ingredients from the seaweed extract (Ecklonia maxima). ■ Improvement of plant growth and stress resistance
(e.g. diseases, drought and salinity).
■ Higher yield from boosted crop growth.
■ High auxin content in Ecklonia
maxima seaweed extract.
■ Plants produce cytokinins mainly
by roots.
■ Cytokinins promote shoot growth.
■ Basfoliar® Kelp SL stimulates
the plant to produce its own
hormones and thus restore a
balance.AuxinCytokinin

Recommendation for application
■ Mixing with foliar fertilizers and pesticides is possible
(miscibility test is advised).
■ Rate: foliar (minimum 0.3 %), drench (1 – 5 %),
drip irrigation (minimum 5 l/ha).
■ Minimum time between applications: 10 – 14 days
(plant needs time to restore hormonal balance).
■ Water pH must be below 7 (alkaline pH destroys auxin).
