2. THE LIQUID HD PROTOCOLS
Purposely built for consumer electronics networking in the home, Liquid HD
technology consists of an architecture and suite of protocols designed to be easily and
inexpensively incorporated into CE products. Unlike earlier proposals for home networkingthat originated in the PC world, the Liquid HD architecture was designed from the ground up to
be lightweight and low-cost. Liquid HD protocols run on top of industry-standard IP
networking protocols, enabling them to be deployed on coax IP networking like MoCA,
wireless like Wi-Fi , power line like Home Plug or HD-PLC, Ethernet or even next-generation
HDMI which adds a high-speed, bi-directional data channel to the HDMI cable. And since
Liquid HD functionality can be integrated into devices either through silicon or via software, its
implementation is flexible enough to meet both the design needs and cost targets of CE
manufacturers.

The Liquid HD suite of protocols includes the following major elements:
Liquid Discover
Liquid Discover is a streamlined, automatic discovery protocol that allows
connected devices to broadcast their capabilities and query each others availability,
simplifying setup and use for consumers. It includes a unique, energy-saving Wake-on-LAN
(WoL) feature, where devices can be put in low-power sleep or standby mode and awakened
remotely when needed.
Liquid Media
Liquid Media is an audio/video (A/V) streaming protocol that enables, robust,
secure distribution of multiple HD compressed streams across the CE network. Liquid Media
leverages standard MPEG transport streams for carrying MPEG-2, h.264 (AVC) and VC-1
compressed media streams.
Liquid Pixels
Liquid Pixels is a powerful protocol for remoting the user interfaces (UIs) of CE
devices and receiving remote control commands from the TV. Its the only CE solution that
allows a source device to project its user interface across the CE network to any display in the
home in a low-latency, low-bandwidth, pixel-accurate manner. A single Liquid HD-certified
remote can now control any device on the Liquid HD network. A tremendous benefit forconsumers, this eliminates the frustration of managing multiple device-specific remotes.

Liquid Control
Liquid Control is the control messaging protocol for Liquid HD networks. Once
devices have discovered each other using Liquid Discover, Liquid Control allows them to set
up media streaming via Liquid Media and manage UI sessions using Liquid Pixels.
Liquid PlayTM
Liquid Play is a comprehensive security architecture that allows consumers to
play content on any of their Liquid HD-certified devices. Liquid Play includes a content
protection architecture, endorsed by Hollywood studios, that meets their requirements for
robustness, revocation, and renewability. In addition to protecting content, Liquid Play also
protects CE devices from network-based attacks, securing all Liquid Discover, Liquid Pixels

3. AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Liquid HD technology gives consumers the freedom to enjoy all digital content on their
own terms, whenever and wherever they choose. Source devices are no longer tied to individual
displays, freeing consumers to enjoy their chosen content on their specified display.
With its unique combination of expanded functionality, greater usability, and low
implementation cost, Liquid HD technology offers tremendous benefits to manufacturers and
service operators. From STBs and DVRs to IPTVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles and more
CE manufacturers have a major opportunity to advance their digital product lines and better
differentiate from the competition as the wave of HDTV matures. Liquid HD technology
affords the kind of must have functionality that creates its own demand, simplifies and
streamlines installations, reduces returns and service calls, and generates follow-up sales as
customers expand their Liquid HD networks to include more compliant devices. For service
operators, Liquid HD offers a cost-effective way to bring multi-room and multi-screen services
to their customers, lowering both capital and operating expenses while increasing customer
satisfaction and reducing churn.

6. WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT
A New Approach to CE Networking
Over the years, many systems have been proposed for the networking of home
entertainment devices, from FireWire-based solutions like HAVI and HANA to DLNA. How is
Liquid HD different from these earlier attempts?
At its core, Liquid HD is a suite of technologies that define how consumer electronics
devices store and share media and communicate with each other. This CE-focused approach
adheres to design principles that yield systems that are simple, low-cost, secure, robust, and
testable in a hardware-intensive fashion. By contrast, previous PC-centric solutions have been
hampered by high cost, excessive complexity, and limited functionality.
Freedom from the PC: Unlike PC-based solutions, Liquid HD embeds functionality in
the TV, freeing users from a host of potential problems and complexities. Under this
approach, the TV evolves from a static receiver into the smart hub and connection point of
the Liquid HD network. Source devices can be likewise embedded with Liquid HD
functionality, or modified with a simple adaptor. In either case, devices will self-discover
and auto-configure when connected to a Liquid HD network, providing true plug-and-play
usability.
Greater flexibility: The Liquid HD architecture embraces the widest possible range of
digital source devices, including home theater components, PCs, gaming consoles, cameras
and camcorders, even mobile phones. Moreover, these devices can be connected to the
Consumer Electronics Network in a wide variety of ways, including coaxial cable, Ethernet
cable, or even Wi-Fi. Users are not limited in what kinds of devices they can access, or
restricted to a particular cable type.
Superior interface: One of the core technologies in the Liquid HD architecture is
LiquidPixels, a powerful set of protocols enabling rich, pixel-accurate, modifiable, remote
user interfaces. To the consumer, this means a consistent, persistent, highly intuitive user

experience. And because it can be easily customized and branded, it offers a unique
opportunity for the service operator to boost customer satisfaction and build loyalty.
Digital Rights Management: Liquid HD incorporates a robust security architecture
that enables users to enjoy protected content like Blu-ray Disc movies with the same
convenience and flexibility as their personal content, such as digital photos. Liquid HD
technology uses proven hardware-based security to protect content against unauthorized
copying and sharing while empowering consumers to play their legally obtained content on
any Liquid HD device in the home.
Green technology: Liquid HD takes a unique approach to power management, enabling
devices in a network to go into sleep/standby mode when not being used, and to wake
automatically when requested.
Highest quality: Developed by the same company that led the development of the
HDMI interface, Liquid HD offers a world of new functionality without compromising on
the superior image quality that users have come to expect. It's the next big step in the
evolution of HD technology.
