January is a great time to review our inclement weather procedures…take a look at pages 18-19 in your school handbook. Be sure you are aware of possible schedule changes that may occur and ensure that you have a plan in place for arrival and/or dismissal should there be a change in our schedule. Please do not call the school office for inclement weather information. We receive our information from the radio and television stations. Fox 41 text alerts are a great way to stay updated on weather situations. Our third and fourth grading periods have been adjusted due to the two December snow days. January 14 th is now the end of the 3 rd Grading Period with a report card distribution date of January 24 th . The fourth grading period is January 15-February 27 with the same distribution date of March 11. Please note that school is now in session on Wednesday, February 26 th and Thursday, February 27 th . As we begin the 2 nd half of the school year keep in mind that all grade levels will be increasing their expectations of students to ensure that they will meet end-of-year standards and will be ready to proceed to the next grade level. Please continue to stay on top of what is happening in your child’s classroom by reading the weekly newsletter/website post each Monday. It is also important to check your child’s progress toward their reading goal. You can track Accelerated Reader goal progress at https://Hosted61.renlearn.com/94730/HomeConnect/Login.aspx
This document is posted to help you gain knowledge. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think about it! Share it to your friends and learn new things together.
The Dare to Care food drive will take place the week of January 27-31st. Our goal is to beat last
years’ total of 2163 lbs. Please start saving your nonperishable holiday leftovers and support Dare
to Care!
After being approached from some of our wonderful fourth graders about some proactive ideas for
bully prevention, we have decided to participate in “No Name Calling Week”, January 21st-24th.
Students will keep a tally of times when they are called a name by a peer or slip up and call a peer a
name. Our students are already some of the kindest kids I have ever encountered. Hopefully, this
small accountability will give our students an even greater sense of the importance of kindness and
respect. The creators of “No Name Calling Week” (www.nonamecallingweek.org) have developed
the SAFE approach as a means for helping children avoid bullies. SAFE is an acronym for:
Stand Positive and Strong
Avoid the Situation
Find Support
Express Your Feelings
1. Stand Positive and Strong means it is important to appear confident. Try using “I” messages (“I feel” or “I think”) that express how you feel and lets bullies know you expect them to stop immediately.
2. Avoid the Situation means do not fight back or respond to bad behavior with more bad behavior. Think of safety first and don’t let emotions cause you to react with anger or violence. Avoid places where you may not be safe and walk away, if possible.
3. Find Your Support means find others who have experienced the same types of situations you have. Hang out with people who accept you and join group activities where you can meet new friends.
4. Express Your Feelings means talking to family, friends, teachers, your principal or your counselor. Seeking help is not “tattling.” Practice making positive statements to boost confidence.
If you have concerns or questions about bullying, please feel free to call or contact me by E mail. If
you ever suspect your child is a victim of name calling or bullying of any kind, please make us aware
Congratulations to all Greathouse Students that met their
ACCELERATED READING GOAL for the 2nd Grading Period.
Don't forget that each student has an AR GOAL for every
grading period. (We're working on a special prize for each
student that meets their AR GOAL for the 3rd grading period).
Remember: The AR Lab is open each morning before school
from 8:30-8:50 a.m.
Let's Keep Reading!
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more
places you'll go.”

The following students met their AR goal for the 2nd grading period! Congratulations!!

On Friday, January 17, at 2:00 pm, Greathouse will hold its annual spelling bee. Each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade class will hold a classroom spelling
bee to determine which three students will compete in the school spelling bee. The winner of our school spelling bee will represent Greathouse at the JCPS 15thDistrict Spelling Bee.
The Greathouse Spelling Bee will be telecast. Parents of students competing in the school spelling bee are welcome to watch in the school library. If you would like a copy of the JCPS Spelling Bee rules or a sample JCPS Spelling Bee study guide, please email Laura Snyder at [email protected].
Greathouse Has Talent!!

fabulous! Many thanks to all of the parents who volunteered and

Once again Greathouse Families have shown their school pride (and their
love of BBQ :-)) in a BIG way!! Greathouse earned $378 (15% of sales) from Mark’s Feed Store thanks to all of YOU!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
AMAZING!!!!
Greathouse has earned over $1,000 (so far and continuing to count) over
the last three months through our monthly Spirit Nights!
WE LOVED IT SO MUCH THE FIRST TIME, WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN!
February's Community Fundraiser Day will be at Chic-Fil-A ALL DAY (that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack time, too) on Monday, February 17th! Any purchases made at both the St. Matthews (across from The Mall St. Matthews) and Springhurst Chic-Fil-A stores will benefit Greathouse! Greathouse will receive 20% of all sales from the entire day!!! How easy is that? You get the convenience of good food, fast and the school receives money to use towards needed technology and/or improvements which ultimately benefits all of our kids! It's a WIN-WIN!
Let's make it interesting and take it up a notch...
Last September at Chic-Fil-A, Greathouse family and friends helped Greathouse earn approximately $395--that's 20% of all the sales that day! I bet we can beat that number in
February because here at Greathouse we love a challenge and
we are just that good!!!
** You must present your coupon that will be sent home via the backpacks in order for Greathouse to receive the 20%! Give a coupon to your neighbors, friends and co-workers, too!***
