33Move ‘em out!

Get your locomotive set moving. Press the DIRECTION button on your CAB-1remote or Lionel transformer. This sequences the Command reverse unit to the nextoperating state.

Adjust track voltage until your locomotive set moves at your desired speed. Toincrease speed, increase track voltage. To decrease speed, reduce voltage. To stop thelocomotive, turn-off track power.

Place your locomotive set on Lionel or Lionel-compatibleO gauge track.

Be sure that the non-powered unit faces the rear of the train.

22Power up your locomotive set with your transformer.

Your locomotive set is designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternatingcurrent. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-currenttransformers are suitable.

Do not power your locomotive set with direct current (DC). Damage tosensitive electronic components may occur.

When you first power up your track, the locomotive set will waitbetween three and eight seconds as it “listens” for digital language from theTrainMaster Command Base (available separately). When it has determined that it’son a conventional (non-Command) railroad, the locomotive set’s headlight willilluminate and RailSounds will fire up. At this point, the locomotive set is in neutral. (This occurs when placing the locomotive set on your railroad for the firsttime. Thereafter, it will start in forward following every five-second power interruption.)

Using your locomotive set’s ElectroCouplers in the non-Command environment

To uncouple rolling stock from your locomotive set’s ElectroCouplers in the

non-Command environment, you must rely

on a piece of rolling stock equipped withLionel magnetic couplers coupled directly toyour locomotive set’s ElectroCouplers. Themagnetic coupler on the rolling stock willthen react to the magnetic field generatedby a Lionel Remote-Control Track section(available separately, 6-65530 for O gauge,6-65149 or 6-12746 for O-27 gauge). Placeyour rolling stock’s coupler “trigger disc”over the central coil of a Remote-ControlTrack section and press UNCOUPLE on thecontroller. The magnetic field pulls the discdownward, and the coupler opens.

Your locomotive set’sElectroCouplers will NOT openmanually or by using aRemote-Control Track section.

Note!

Note!

Although RailSounds is powered by track voltage, the battery is required foruninterrupted operation and shutdown sequences. Use only alkaline batteries.

Discontinue power for ten seconds before changing the RailSounds switchposition.

If the RailSounds sound system “drops out” during track power interruptions(for example, during a direction change), replace the battery.

RailSounds operations

Figure 3. Battery installation

Your locomotive set’s RailSounds sound system—the basics

Lionel RailSounds is the most realisticmodel railroad sound system in the

world. Your powered locomotive featuresdigital samples from real-life diesellocomotives for the ultimate in realism.

You may choose to install a nine-voltalkaline battery in the powered locomotive. This ensures interruption-free operation ofRailSounds. The battery clip is located at therear of the engine beneath the rear hatch.Gently lift up and unsnap the rear hatch asshown below to access the battery clip and

the volume control knob. When you first apply track power, the

locomotive set’s RailSounds system producessounds of the locomotive at idle. As thelocomotive set moves, the RPM sounds beginincreasing with the locomotive’s speed.

To silence the diesel roar (horn and bellremain unaffected), slide the RailSoundsswitch on the underside of the locomotive toNO SND (see Figure 1 on page 5) beforepowering up the locomotive.

RailSounds operationsExperiencing the range of your locomotive set’s RailSounds soundsystem

Notes on RailSounds

• Using a flathead screwdriver, turn thevolume knob clockwise or counter clock-wise in the location shown in Figure 3 onpage 8 to adjust sound output.

• Listen for incidental locomotive soundsduring RailSounds operation. They’reautomatic and, of course, authentic.

• The nine-volt alkaline battery youinstalled ensures continuous diesel roarsounds.

• Longer track-power interruptions(including locomotive derailments)cause RailSounds to shut down afterabout seven seconds.

• For even more authentic RailSoundseffects, operate in the TrainMasterCommand Control environment.

W ith RailSounds, you experience thesounds of real railroading like never

before. Simply put, it’s the mostsophisticated, authentic model railroadsound system in the world.

• Four diesel-roar levels. Your locomotive set’s speed determines thelevel of diesel RPM roar—automatically, if you prefer: idle, halfthrottle, three quarters or full-speedoutput.

• MultiHorn. A different horn sound atdifferent speeds—a RailSoundsexclusive.

• Mechanical bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin the effect, again to discontinue.

• Reverse unit reset sound. Power

down your track, wait for three to fiveseconds, and listen for the air-releasesound—that’s the locomotive set tellingyou the Lionel Command reverse unithas just reset to forward operation.

• Shutdown sequence. No other modelrailroad sound system shuts down likeRailSounds. Turn off track power, and, after the air-release reset sound, youhave two seconds to restart yourlocomotive set. If you’re done withoperations, RailSounds will commencewith a realistic diesel shutdownsequence about two seconds after the air-release reset occurs.

Nine-volt alkaline batteryinstallation is required forRailSounds shutdownoperation.

Setting Speed Control1. Run the engine at the desired speed for approximately five seconds. 2. Press and hold the horn button.3. While holding the horn button, increase the track voltage by at least three volts (at least a

quarter turn).4. At this point, speed control is set.

Engine speed will increase slightly before returning to the set speed.

Turning off Speed Control using your transformer:1. While the engine is in neutral, turn your controller up to the maximum power (no more

than 20 volts), wait one second, then press and hold the whistle button.2. While holding the horn button, slowly reduce track voltage to one-fourth of full power. 3. Release the horn button.4. Cycle the engine to forward or reverse. The engine is now out of speed control mode.

In conventional operation, the smoke unit and lights are connected directly totrack power. Do not exceed 14-16 volts for extended periods. Doing so will reducethe life of your lamps.

Odyssey System operations

Odyssey System conventional (transformer) operation

The Odyssey System

The Odyssey System is a “cruise control”for your locomotive. Once the speed is

set (see below), your locomotive willmaintain a constant speed, no matter whatloads the locomotive pulls or what grades

you have on your layout. This digitally-controlled system also allows for extremelyslow movement that will amaze any “scale”enthusiast.

Odyssey System operations

While in the Command Controlenvironment, the speed control

feature of the Odyssey System is always on.When turning the throttle, the speed of theengine will respond to each signal from the

Command Base. Example: Address theengine and slowly turn the throttle. The firstlight flash corresponds to the first speedstep. This is the slowest speed of thelocomotive.

TrainMaster Command operationsThe Command Control environment

TrainMaster Command Control is theadvanced model railroad control system

from Lionel that gives you the power to operatemultiple Command-equipped locomotives onthe same track, at the same time.

To operate in Command mode, youneed a Command Base and a CAB-1remote. Find them both at your authorizedLionel retailer.

Place your locomotive set on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.

22Address your locomotive set using CAB-1.

Your powered engine was assigned ENG 1 and your non-poweredengine was assigned ENG 2 at the factory. They have already beenprogrammed as a lash-up, TR 9. You may change these settings atany time with the help from the following sections in this manual.

• To operate your engines together as a lash-up, press TR and 9 onyour CAB-1 Remote Controller. Be sure that the powered unit is in the lead.Refer to page 17 for information about TrainMaster Command Controllash-ups.

• To operate your engines individually, address the powered unit bypressing ENG and 1 on your CAB-1. Address the non-powered unit bypressing ENG and 2 on your CAB-1.

• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not trackpower—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionelengines. Track power is simply like gasoline in the tank of your car—itgives you the power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where to go or howfast to get there.

33Move ‘em out!

• Throttle up or press any command button on the CAB-1. Your locomotiveset will respond to your every command.

11• Make sure track power is OFF before placing on the track.• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is plugged-in and its

communications wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lioneltransformer or the U terminal on any of your installed PowerMasters.

• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (nomore than 20 volts). On PowerMasters, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD.

Tuning your locomotive set’s performance

MOMENTUMTrainMaster Command’s momentum

feature simulates the labored performanceof a locomotive pulling a heavy load. PressL, M, or H (located under CAB-1’sremovable panel) for light, medium, orheavy momentum. The locomotive set’sCommand reverse unit remembers thissetting until you change it. For quicklocomotive response, choose L.

BRAKING AND BOOSTINGThere’s more to starting and stopping

than just turning the CAB-1 throttle. Use theBOOST and BRAKE command buttons—they give you incremental control of speedand are the superior way to handle grades, gradual stops-and-starts, and more. Plus, using BRAKE in the Commandenvironment gives you a bonus RailSoundseffect—the ultra-realistic sound ofsquealing brakes.

SOUND QUALITYTo achieve your preferred RailSounds

master volume level, we recommend thatyou adjust your locomotive set volumecontrol knob (see Figure 3 on page 8 for thelocation). Turn the adjustment knob left orright to reach the desired volume level.

For quick remote-control of volume belowthe master setting—for example, muting—use the CAB-1 numeric keypad’s volumecontrol. Press AUX1 and then 4 on thenumeric keypad to lower the overallRailSounds output.

HIGH VOLTAGE SETTINGPress SET, and the headlight will flash.

Get your locomotive moving to themaximum speed you want it to run, thenpress BOOST. Use this to keep yourlocomotive from derailing at excessivespeeds. Turn off the high voltage setting bypressing SET, then BOOST, holding eachfor one second.

STALLMake your locomotive set feel more

responsive by setting a “stall” voltage. Getyour locomotive moving, then press SET;the locomotive set will stop. Turn thethrottle clockwise to get the locomotivemoving, then decrease speed until thelocomotive just stops. Press SET again; theCommand reverse unit remembers the stallsetting until you change it. To clear the stallsetting, press SET twice, holding it for onesecond each time.

These settings will be lost when you assign a new engine ID number.Note!

We recommend that you choose an easy toremember ID# for your engine. Some possi-bilities are part of the engine road number, your age, or any two digit number that is notused by another engine. Write the number on asmall piece of tape and put this on the bottomof the fuel tank to aid in remembering.

While your powered and non-poweredlocomotives have been factory-

programmed as a lash-up, both units musthave their own ID#’s. This allows you toopen the appropriate ElectroCouplers andset the appropriate directional lighting. Thepowered unit has been assigned ID# 1; thenon-powered unit has been assigned ID# 2.

To change these individual ID#’s, switchthe Command reverse unit switch to PGMon either the powered unit OR the non-powered unit. Do not attempt to assign bothID#’s together. Refer to Figure 1 on page 5for the switch location. Plug in theCommand Base, set the unit on the track, then power up. Using your CAB-1 RemoteController, press ENG, enter your ID#(between 1 and 99), then press the SETbutton located under the removable panelon the CAB-1 Remote Controller.

The Command reverse unit will confirmthe new ID#. The horm will sound, or theheadlight will flash (if RailSounds is off).Slide the reverse unit switch back to RUN.

If you change the ID# of eitherthe powered or non-poweredlocomotives, you must build anew lash-up to control both unitstogether. See page 17.

Your powered and non-powered locomotives were factory-programmed as a lash-up. Whenyou press TR, 9 on the CAB-1 Remote Controller, both units respond together, allowing

the headlight and back-up lights to work together. Remember, you can always address anindividual unit in a lash-up using its ENG ID#.

You will need to build a new lash-up if you want to change the lash-up (TR) ID#, add anadditional locomotive, or assign new individual ID#’s to any part of the consist.

To build a lash-up, assign a unique engine (ENG) ID# to both units. Arrange the units onthe track and couple them together. The Command reverse unit switches must be set toRUN/FORWARD.

If you press a wrong button, start over with that particular unit; the assignment isn’tsaved until you press SET on the CAB-1.

Start with the powered unit.

1. On your CAB-1 remote controller, press TR, then enter your lash-up ID# (1-9).

No other track or lash-up should be assigned that ID#.

2. Enter the lead unit’s unique ID#, then press F.

3. Press SET beneath the front panel of the CAB-1.

The horn will blow to indicate that the lead locomotive has been assigned the firstposition.

Complete the lash-up by adding the non-powered unit.

STEP 1: Move the switch on yourlocomotive from RUN to PGM.

STEP 2: Plug in your Command Base.

STEP 3: Place the locomotive on track, then turn on power to your track.

STEP 4: Press ENG, then input thelocomotive’s ID#. Press SET.

STEP 5: Press ENG, the ID#, AUX1, thenpress 8 for your locomotive.

STEP 6: Turn off power to your track andwait ten seconds.

STEP 7: Remove the locomotive from yourtrack, and move the switch from PGM toRUN.

STEP 8: Place the locomotive back ontrack, then turn power on to the track.

STEP 9: Press ENG and the ID#, thenoperate as normal.

Adding smoke fluid to your locomotive’s smoke generator

Both “A” units are equipped with asmoke generator that produces safe,

clean, white smoke during operation.Periodically, you will need to add smokefluid to the locomotives; a small tube ofsmoke fluid is included with this set.

To add smoke fluid, pierce the end of thetube with a pin. Before you begin, be surethat your locomotive is on a level surfacewith the smoke generator off. Add four toeight drops of smoke fluid into one smokestack on each A unit as illustrated in Figure 4. When smoke production wanes,

add four to eight drops of smoke fluid in thesame manner. Additional smoke fluid (no. 6-62909) is available from your Lioneldealer.

To turn off the smoke generators, slidethe SMK/NO SMK switch at the bottom ofeach locomotive to the NO SMK position (seeFigure 1 on page 5 for the location of thisswitch). When the smoke generator is on, besure that there is smoke fluid in the smokegenerator to avoid damage. Smokeproduction is greater when the locomotive ispulling a heavy load and at higher voltages.

Help your Lionel locomotive set lead along and productive life on your

railroad by maintaining it properly. We recommend that you purchase a

Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (no. 6-62927), available from your Lioneldealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind: neverover-lubricate (a small amount will do), and

avoid getting grease or oil on the locomotiveset’s wheels or your track. You’ll know yourlocomotive set requires lubrication whenvisual inspection reveals dryness on the partsindicated in Figures 5 and 6. Removeaccumulated dirt and dust before lubricating, and always lubricate any locomotiveemerging from prolonged storage.

Replacing the traction tires

Your powered locomotive is equippedwith four traction tires. These rubber

treads increase the tractive effort of the unit, allowing it to pull more cars at once. Duringthe course of normal operation, the traction

tires may become worn out. Because youmust remove the trucks and the side framesto access the wheels, we recommend thatyou have the traction tires replaced by yourAuthorized Lionel Service Center.
