Dear Parent/ Carer,

As Headteacher, I would like to take this opportunity, to welcome your son/daughter into our sixth year and to share with you our expectations of them.

Our 6th year is a very positive experience, offering pupils the opportunity to:

Enhance their academic qualifications

Prepare for transition into Higher/ Further Education or the world of work

Develop their leadership capacity

Explore ideas and contribute to the community in school committees

Build relationships with staff on a more adult basis as we bridge the transition between school and leaver destinations.

To allow the experiences of such opportunities and recognising the importance of independent study, the pupils do not have a full timetable – we do have a tariff system in place, which is detailed later. S6 students are also encouraged to use private study rooms, the library and have access to a designated area within the social area.

There are some important expectations we have of S6 pupils in terms of compulsory classes over and above their chosen course and these are as follows.

Registration class: Each morning between 8.35 am and 8.45 am. S6 students will be placed in S1 – S3 register classes. They will be given duties such as reading out notices, checking uniform etc. S6 students who wish to be buddies will be placed in S1 register classes.

Assemblies: There is an Assembly programme running throughout the year.

PD: This is a compulsory programme of Personal Development and takes place on a Monday afternoon. Details on this programme will be issued later.

We view S6 as a transition year for students. We therefore balance compulsory elements with choice elements to encourage them to take more personal responsibility.

It is expected that students will attend all classes and participate fully in the life of the school.

We would appreciate your support in ensuring that your son/ daughter gains maximum benefit from their sixth year.

Our school aims...Our school aims... to provide all students and staff with the opportunity to achieve their

maximum potential to provide a supportive environment in which self -confidence and

mutual respect can develop to make learning and working a challenging and enjoyable

experience.

Course choice…..Course choice…..is an important process and forms the first step in senior school towards achieving our shared aims. It is essential that each student chooses a course which is both fulfilling and appropriate. To attain this goal, it is important that each student (and his / her parents) study the following document carefully before coming to any decisions. Your Pupil Support teacher will go over the procedure in class and you will meet with him/her on the Course Choice Day. Your subject teachers will also make recommendations that should be adhered to, except under the most exceptional circumstances. Flexibility is built in to the system and it should be recognized from the outset that changes may have to be made once the final results are received in August. In most cases however it is possible to get it right first time.

Our next academic session will begin in June 2011. This “early” start is important in maintaining the high standards which we have attained in the past.

ProgressionProgression

As a sixth year student you have chosen to return to school and follow a course which ideally will be of direct relevance to your future ambitions and interests. To accommodate this and to ensure your last year at Linlithgow Academy is both fulfilling and appropriate, the school allows a degree of flexibility within the course choice procedure to reflect the maturity and self disciplined nature of our S6 students.

This flexibility means we, as a school, will trust our senior students to choose a relevant course. This course may consist of both formal SQA courses as well as crediting other work and interests that will be of benefit to you and the school. PD (Personal Development) periods will remain compulsory and more information on this will be given later.

22Linlithgow Academy

Page 7: Linlithgow Academy S6 Course Choice Booklet

To allow flexibility, S6 students can decide their course based on a tariff system. A minimum number of points need to be achieved, with points being made up from any aspect of our formal and extended curriculum.

S6 pupils need to achieve a minimum of 21 points. This must include at least 3 courses from Section

A, two of which must be ‘SQA’. The minimum number of points must be maintained throughout the year, however this figure should not necessarily be seen as a maximum! You cannot drop below this

figure for any reason. Attendance checks will be made throughout the year.

monitoring & standardsmonitoring & standards

Linlithgow AcademyLinlithgow Academys6 course choices6 course choice

The standards expectedThe standards expectedOur school reserves the right to withdraw any student from a Scottish Qualifications Authority course which the student is not attending. Any student whose attendance rate falls below 90% over any two consecutive months, without any proven medical reason, will receive a warning letter and given two weeks to remedy the situation. (98% of all our students manage attendance rates of over 90% during their first four years of school.)

Latecoming and intermittent truanting can also erode valuable teaching time. Students who are consistently late or who miss individual classes or leave school without notifying the office or their teacher on more than one occasion during a term will also receive a warning letter or interview from the Year Head. The school reserves the right to ask a pupil to leave school if they cannot maintain the appropriate standards.

Our objective must be to maintain the highest standards possible.

Responsibility and concern permeates the ethos of our school. Education is a partnership - a voluntary partnership between staff, students and their parents. Our shared aim is the promotion of higher standards and greater breadth of achievement.

Make your choice wisely. Make it a successful one!

Monitoring your progressMonitoring your progressA progress report will be issued with entries being made via the school’s computer network system. At regular intervals, staff will enter any concerns plus assessment results. Predictions of level of attainment will be better judged in February, after the prelims. If there is a concern then the student will be interviewed by their Pupil Support teacher. Strategies to overcome any difficulties will be explored. A change of course should only occur after consultation with parents.

If a student fails an assessment, there will be additional support offered by departments.

55S6 Course Choice 2013

Page 10: Linlithgow Academy S6 Course Choice Booklet

Success in Unit Assessments is fundamental to course success. Students who fail the Unit Assessment will be given one re-sit opportunity.  This re-sit should happen, where practical, within one month of the original assessment and on a date agreed between the student and teacher. Students who fail the re-sit can remain on the course and sit the final exam; however they will not gain an overall award in the academic year. Only under exceptional circumstances will a further re-sit be permitted.

To prevent disruption to class work, some re-assessments may occur on Friday afternoons. Subjects tackle courses in a variety of ways with assessments occurring at different times throughout the year. Parents should understand the importance of the internal assessments. On no account should pupils go on holiday during term time, otherwise they are jeopardising their chances of attaining a courses award.

Any questions regarding S6 courses should be directed to your Pupil Support teacher.

Course details?Course details? The course embodies a wide range of Language and Literature activities. Students are encouraged to read widely, and to discuss their reading and ideas for expressive writing. The course comprises three 40 hour units.

Unit 1 Literature - This unit focuses on the reading of literature and on responding critically to that reading. Students study a substantial number and variety of literary texts selected from the list of designated authors.

Unit 2 Creative Writing (optional) - This unit focuses on the production of a range of pieces of imaginative writing in different genres. Students will draw upon their study of language and literature to give expression to their own ideas and feelings in written form. It is often possible to arrange tutorials with a visiting writer as part of this unit.

Unit 3 Textual Analysis (optional) – In this unit, students will respond critically to unseen literary texts. Students will develop an awareness of how meaning is created as the reader interacts with the text. They will also develop an appreciation of the relationships that exist between text and context (for example, literary, linguistic, historical and ideological).l

Specialist Study - Students submit for external examination a dissertation which should be between 3000-4000 words in length. The choice of topic is very much open to the student and may be very wide ranging. Although the length of the dissertation may seem very daunting, most students feel a considerable sense of satisfaction at completing a major piece of work of this kind.
