E D I T O R I A LAround this period back in 2007 I took the decision to move to Ka-lamata from Athens. The change quite big... from a city of 4 million people, living there 9 great years, to move in a small city of 60000 people; Big shock! At the same time quitting my good job in Ath-ens and coming to Kalamata to initiate a non profit start-up with-out any backup plan and without any financial support; Second shock! Starting doing “some-thing” (youth work) that nobody could understand, finding diffi-culties to explain in simple words what’s that “youth work thing” (?) in a society negatively prejudiced with non-profits. Third shock! Try-ing to find partners or employees to work for this social start-up? Mission impossible - being alone for the first years; Fourth shock! Trying to find support and meet-ing only people who would like to take advantage of “youth”; Fifth Shock! Being independent non-political, non-religious and “out of their system” made them feel in-timidated of something they can-not control; Sixth Shock! Having your work recognized in all around the globe but not that much at your local environment; Seventh Shock!

They say that 7 is a significant number in many different con-cepts. I am already 7 years in Kalamata... and I experi-enced 7 practical or psychologi-cal shocks... and they weren’t easy... but they were fun! or fun-ny? Never mind... the fact is that I feel satisfied and proud for my 3 children (K.A.NE., Youth Cen-tre of Kalamata and Kalamata Street Festival) but I also feel ex-hausted... maybe I need to take a break... will I manage? Nobody knows...

ΜΙΚΡΕΣ ΑΓΓΕΛΙΕΣWith the Youth Centre opening again its doors to the public, for the 5th year, there are still some things, where we could use your help!!!For the beginning of the work-shops, and throughout the year, the Youth Centre needs:

* CHAIRSStrange as it may sound, the Youth Center is in need of chairs! As the Youth Centre acquires more and more members, and the use of the chairs is extensive, our poor old chairs are break-ing down. As it is, it is impos-sible to have all the chairs that the workshops need. If you have any chairs that you do not use, or you think that you can spare, you can bring them!

* MARKERS for the white boardAs all of the language workshops make use of the white board, we consume approximately 3 mark-ers per week!

* PENSYou can never have enough of those!

* COMPUTERSUnfortunately, the Youth Centre at the moment has only 1 work-ing (almost) computer to be used in the info-point. Temporar-ily, and only for the registrations, volunteers of the Youth Centre have brought their computers from home… however, eventually they will need them back… We need at least 1 more computer to be used in the dance workshops and 1 more for the outside activi-ties… :(

* GUITARSAs we are very musical this year, if you have any guitar that you do not need anymore and can give it to the Youth Centre, please do

* MIRRORSThis may be a bit of a longshot but we also need full-length mir-rors for the dance room.

We know that it may be unlikely that people have spare full-length mirrors lying around in their ga-rages at home, but then again,

if you don’t ask, you’ll never re-ceive!

My study life is totally luck and totally different than oth-er normal students. From the beginning of my article I want to thank you my bosses here in Kalamata Maria , Aggeliki , Christina , Fotini , Filaretos and Jelena. I don’t know who is ex-actly responsible about my free days who is my top boss ex-actly but all of them helped me about my university stuff , ex-pecially Jelena is the main one about “finishing The University idea for this year”. My department is economics when finish my high school I didn’t want to be economist but in Turkey when you finish your high school you have to go one exam and you have to choose departments as how Is your point. Normally this is my last year , my university is for 4 years and I have to go all of classes and sign for all , for you were there or not. Sounds quite hard when you think me. But one of my best friend, her name is sounds

similar with me , name is Seda and she is signing for me for all the classes , like I am there. I don’t know how is education system in other universities but in my university we have two term Autumn Semester and Spring Semester , and this terms have 3 exams for each one. Three and three totally six exams in a year. First one is visa exams second one is final ex-ams If your point is not enough to pass after final exam , they gave you third change and this third one is makeup exams (when they calculate our total point for end of the term they take visa exam’s 40% and final exam’s 60%) . This mean im-portant one is second and third about point but if you can not go second one you have one more chance But if you can not go first one , you don’t have second visa exam chance.In My Autumn Semester I had 14 lessons (normal success-ful students have 8 But I am different case) when I go for first visa exams , I was think-ing like “okay it is not possible to pass all without go to les-sons because you will not have any idea about lessons, just try

to give some maybe 3 maybe 4 “ After this 2 weeks of ex-ams, we can learn all of our re-sults in 1 month more or less (Here is turkey) when I learn all 5 were Really good but oth-ers were terrible. I started to think like “Never mind don’t go for other ones, your visa points are not enough “ I decided to don’t go for second one but I never thought about third one. Therefore in the 31 Decem-ber night at new year dinner at Προσεχώς, we were talking about studying stuff and uni-versities with Jelena , I men-tioned about my situation and she started to explain me that how I have to go, she was right because if I don’t go I would have 1 term more with 14 ex-ams, but if I go it could me more easy because I already had good points with my 5 les-sons it was luck. After talking with Jelena , I started to search cheap flights from the begin-ning I couldn’t find but later with good luck I found. This is really miracle after this exams weeks when I learn my results (this exams results are easy to learn it is not like visa) I learn that I passed 11

above 14 lessons. it was waow , really I couldn’t believe. This mean if I can pass other three at summer exams I can gradu-ate for Autumn Semester. If I don’t talk with Jelena for sure I wouldn’t go to any exams anymore. Thank you so much again Jelena! Nowadays, I came to Turkey again for Spring Semester’s first exams They are going quite well (luck is again with me) When you read my this article at the time, I will be at Greece again. Maybe I will know all of my results also. After this Visa exam, i will have two more but they will be after EVS. And the main good news , it is looking like finally I will graduate In this summer.

If you ask me, EVS is a great op-portunity for learning, transforma-tion and exploration. After all, it is a year away from home, from all the friends, family and everything fa-miliar, a year out of the educational institutions and without the respon-sibility of full-time employment. As such, it gives you the time to pur-sue many of the things that were al-ways somewhere in the back of your mind or on your to-do lists scattered around your university notes, old di-aries and post-it´s in your room.Apart from learning Greek, tak-ing part in dancing lessons, teach-ing yoga, and continuing learning Arabic, sustainable development has always been one of my inter-ests. After talking about it and ex-changing some ideas with Fiachra and Nikos (a local volunteer) in the first months of the EVS, we decided to organize a youth exchange with this topic. What better way to learn something than by putting it in prac-tice as a creative project of a group of international young people! Loipón, we chose the partner (par-ticipants) organizations, wrote the application (about 30 pages long if not more!), in which we had to describe the project in detail and

present our programme for the week of the youth exchange, to-gether with its theoretical back-ground, methodology, aims and objectives, and after some months of waiting and wondering, we got the green light (aka the funds) from the EU, which meant that all the work was not for nothing and the youth exchange was actually happening! Soon after, the meet-ings of the organizers (Fiachra, me, and a small group of local vol-unteers from the social coopera-tive Prosexws) became more or less a regular practice, and we all started feeling excited preparing for the event in May.Basically, the idea of the youth

exchange we are organizing is to promote sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle in harmony with nature. The focus is on the envi-ronmental aspect and in making the most out what the local cli-mate, surroundings, and natural resources have to offer - in a cre-ative, sustainable, do-it-yourself way. Why? Because if you never question it, the pressure of the system will probably have you be-lieve that consumerism and help-less passive compliance with the rules of the rat race is the only choice you have. Being less dependent in terms of knowledge and needs gives you freedom, and can actually increase the quality of your personal life, and consequently, like a wave, create positive changes within the local community and spread onwards, even internationally. It empowers you on all levels and makes you realize that there is in fact more than one way to live. Our youth ex-change, part of the European Youth in Action Programme, will bring to-gether thirty young people from six

different countries: Romania, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Turkey, and Greece. During one week together, they will get an insight into each other´s cul-tures and together learn things that will stay with them for life. In the first days of April we already had a visit of the youth leaders from the countries that will be represent-ed in the youth exchange. They came to Kalamata in order to be-come familiar with the place itself, to meet us, and to discuss the pro-gramme together, and also so that they can better prepare the par-ticipants before the departure for what is about to follow. We spent three great sunny days together, and are now even more motivated for the event itself. The Greenili-cious Greekology will take part from the 14th to the 20th of May. We will keep you posted. I am with you this time with a different subject, i will explain you one of meal that i discov-ered. I don’t know if anyone discov-ered this food before, but I re-ally don’t care.I wanted to give you some in-formation about me first and than i will explain you that how i discovered. Normally i don’t know how to cook, but I was just cooking pasta and some of easy recipes. You know the efforting how can I save the day with an easy meal. I think just the university students can understand this, I don’t know how is university students at other countries, what do they do I have no little idea, but in Turkey we do this things, this is really important because the little calculates are also so im-portant because you are stu-dent and you have to be used to about somethings. How can I make things with little things you have to have brainstorm-ing about this subject. It is not

easy to be student in Turkey. You are studying and fighting with life, this mean people says you that you have to study and that is not important for them how are you pooping or eating. To be student is so hard in Tur-key, let me show you how are students living. Imagine that one of turkish person is alone at the desert and I will tell you what can they do there, after this I wish that you can under-stand me clearly.

1. Making laundry hanger with fork. Let to have cheap things in your life.

2. This drill can be useful about a lot of things for example you can use it as a mixer.

3. You can not find now in Tur-key this kind of wc, but some of students discovered it.

4. You can use fridge as a nor-mal stuff’s wardrope.

5. You can cook pasta inside of cattle if the things are not go-ing as a normal. You can try ..

6. You can also cook meat un-der of iron and whatever you want.

7. And also heater can be cook-er too.

Of course all of students are not like that in Turkey, but 50% are passing on this ways. Actually this is also kind of exam for them. Be-cause imagine that you are trying to build your future, and you have one target you have to study a lot for have what do you want. And god is not giving everyone what they want you have to effort and put your level always so high, for stay stronger. I know I gave so much details but I had to do it. Because if you want to talk about something you have to

talk about past first, and than your main message. This is my idea. Be-cause other way you can not give your main message, sometimes it is not important that what are you talking about sometimes the im-portance is on details. Let’s see my no name meal. Before Kalamata I was just know how to cook pasta and some of easy meals. Sometimes we were need a girl for go out of the classical foods, if you had a girl as a friend it was. So easy, because you could eat good and different meals. I think I also woke up here about a lot of things not just about foods. This is my first abroad experience, first time I am living with people from dif-ferent countries. (Of course I have been part of other exchange proj-ects) they were doing what they want, but I couldn’t find anything different except för classicals. After 2 months I started to cook different meals, but they were not like how I want. I was always searching new tastes. After 1 months I started to cook good things. First cutting the garlics and than adding yoghurt and mixing putting putting all putting all of them to the saucepan, first step is done. And than the sauce, roasting the pa-pers, adding tomatoes than roast-ing sousages. Than sauce is done. Second step is also okay. Now boil-ing the pasta when it is done mix-ing everything finally meal is ready. See you on new article.

After the criticism of neglect that characterizes us, I think we should be more aware of how important it is to know clearly what is at stake when voting takes place. It is final time to start reading the programmes of the parties. Now that you only have, that we only have, one month ahead to do so. We cannot forget that the ruthless

brutality of the crisis and the austerity policies are after all coming from Brussels (EU).Political apathy, the crisis of the leftist parties, the fear of low turnout at the elections are problems that already existed in 1979 during the first Europe-an elections. Thirty-five years later we have the same con-cerns and fears. Despite such a long time, it seems that Europe has not changed in terms of its values of respect, tolerance and democracy that it so pre-tentiously proclaims (despite having won the Nobel Peace Prize, the EU has been an in-famous accomplice of another Nobel Prize winner, Obama, in Syria and in the Ukraine). A disgrace. However, is it possible to change Europe by voting?The truth is that in Europe the financial elite lives off its easily accumulated money and spec-ulation, thus enjoying their perfect position for the exploi-tation of human beings in the name of the market. The Eu-ropean Central Bank has de-signed a system that diverts money previously intended for education, health, develop-

ment cooperation and public services to speculators through creation of a public debt.The European citizens have lost the possibility of self-govern-ment to some financial powers that make the economic deci-sions of the governments. Eu-rope was nothing but a politi-cal illusion of a social state that would function as an alterna-tive to the dictatorships of vari-ous origins and to the Ameri-can capitalism. However, the measures imposed in Europe to tackle the crisis have been crueller than Yankee neoliberal-ism. The gap between the rich and the poor is already huge in Germany, but in the so-called “colonies” of the EU periphery it is even multiplied.Still, despite all these wounds and disappointments, we can-not make the EU a spa retreat for the exhausted national politicians (as is the case with the Upper House or Senate in Spain). We have to go to vote. Each according to their own sensibility, but vote, vote, vote ... You know it now: be-tween the 22nd and the 25th of May.

Good question! I think most of the EVS here don’t have a clear plan, including me. I ac-tually also didn’t know before the EVS started what my fu-ture plans were. So this is also one of the reasons why I came here in the first place. To orien-tate myself, to get to know my own interests better, to have a little more time to decide and still with only two more months left in Kalamata I’m not sure what to do in the future. I just finished school before coming here and now I at least decid-ed to go to university to study something. The only question is what? Sometimes I was a lit-tle jealous of those who always knew what they want to study

or what job they want to do. For me it was something differ-ent every day and I changed my plans constantly. Now, if people ask me what I am go-ing to do next year they will only get an answer like: “Study something?! Often I get an-noyed with questions about my future and even more if I have to hear something like “What? You still don’t know exactly?” Of course this is because slowly I really have to decide and I can tell you that I really hate tak-ing important decisions. I have some friends, who are my age and will already get their bach-elor degree soon. They finished school, took a decision and

went straight on to university. I never was stressed about fin-ishing everything early and get a 9-to-5 job as fast as possible, to do it for the rest of my life. I preferred to spend some time in the USA when I was 16 and now some time here in beau-tiful Greece and I gained so much from it, things that also will be beneficial for my future. Fact is that next October a new chapter will begin and I’m sure that I will figure out soon what exactly I will apply for. And if it doesn’t work out for me, I’ll try something else. It’s a big deci-sion to take but it’s not a final one. I’m sure that me, and also the others will find their “thing” sooner or later. Until October I will try to get a job for the summer to be able to travel a little bit in Septem-ber and otherwise just enjoy the few weeks of warm weath-er that Germany has to offer but right now I’m still here, liv-ing under the Greek sun, mak-ing the best out of the present.

Γειά σας παιδιά, τι κάνουμε;Εώς ξέρετε είμαι εδώ στην Καλαμάτα για οκτώ μηνές και είδα πολλά από την έχω φτάνει. Έχω κάνει πολύ φίλοι νέοι, από πολλές διαφορετικές χόρες. Είχα πολλά σκαμπανεβάσματα, έμαθα πολλά πράγματα, και είχα πολλές εμπερίες, πολλές καλές, μερικές κακές, αλλά όλες χρήσιμες για εμένα. Ίσως δεν θα το διαπιστώσω τώρα, ή σε πέντε μήνες ακόμα, ίσως χρειάζομαι χρόνο να ξεμπερδέψω όλες τις εμπερίες μου.

Ήρθα εδώ στον Αύγουστο και συναντήσαμε με τις εθελοντές που είχανε έμενε εδώ για δέκα μηνές ή ένας χρόνος, και μας δίνανε πολλές συμβουλές και πληροφορίες για να περνάμε καλά εδώ. Πήγαμε στα πολλά παρτιά (!), ταξιδέψαμε στον Πελοπόννησος και φωτογραφήσαμε πολλά!Όταν άνοιγε το Κέντρο Νέων, αρχήσαμε την δουλειά μας. Κάθε μέρα είχε, και έχει ακόμα, πολύ κοσμο, και μερικές φορές

ήμουν λίγο βυθισμένος! Αλλά, προσάρμησα! Ήξερα πριν ήρθα ότι θα είναι λίγο δύσκολο για να ρυθμίσω: νέα χόρα, νέα γλώσσα, νέοι άνθρωποι, νέα περιβάλλον αλλά υπάρχει εδώ πολλά καλά παιδιά που το ξέρανε, και έκαναν όλα που μπόρεσαν να μας βοηθήσουν.

Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος και τυχερός για αυτό. Γενικά ήμουν πολύ τυχερός εδώ. Δηλαδή με την δουλειά μου, με οι φίλοι μου, με τον καιρο εδώ, με ορισμένες ειδικές άνθρωπους που θα μπορούσα μόνο να είχα συναντηθεί εδώ, και είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων για αυτά. Δεν θα αλλάζω τίποτα.Τι έχω μάθει;Έχω μάθει να σκέφτομαι πριν λέω ναι. Λέω ναι για πολλά πράγματα όταν δεν προλαβαίνω, και έπρεπε να το μάθω. Έχω

μάθει να σκέφτομαι τους άνθρωπους και να εξετάμουν τις απόψιες τους. Κάθε άτομα είναι διαφορετικά, έχουν τα δικά τους προβλήματα και κάθε άτομα, δεν έχει συμασία ποιοι είναι, πρέπει να το θυμούνται. Έχω μάθει πολλά πράγματα σκετικά με τι θέλω να κάνω για δουλειά, και προσπαθώ να κάνω

αυτά κάθεμερα. Έχω μάθει ότι πρέπει να ξυπνήσω νορισότερα, πρέπει να σκέφτομαι και άλλο για τι νιώθει το άλλο παιδί, και ότι δεν μπορώ να κάνω τίποτα αν δεν νιώθω καλά εγώ. Είμαι εθελοντής αλλά πρώτα είμαι εγώ, και μεκριές φορές το ξεχάσω. Είμαστε εθελοντές,

είμαστε εδώ να βοηθήσουμε και έχουμε ευθυνών που δεχθήκαμε αλλά, αν έχουμε προβλήματα μέσα μας που μας καθιστούν κάτω, ίσως έμας εμείς χρειαζόμαστε βοήθεια. Ίσως ο Θεός εαυτός θέλει βοήθεια από καιρό σε καιρό. Έχω μάθει, εώς κακής ποιότητος ώς ακούγετε, ότι είμαστε όλοι ανθρώπινα, με τις ελπίδες, με τους φόβους, είμαστε όλοι το ίδιο, κάθε άτομα, είτε το αντιλαμβανόμαστε είτε όχι, είμαστε όλοι οι αντανακλάσεις από το άλλο. Είμαστε όλοι εθελοντές στον

κόσμο εδώ, και είμαστε εδώ να βοηθήσουμε. Να μην ξεχάσουμε να πιατήσουμε απ΄τα ονειρά μας, να μην φοβόμαστε η ζωη μας είναι δική μας.

29 March I went to Istanbul. I arrived to İstanbul at 15.00. When I go to Istanbul first thing for me to visit Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) and Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque). Then I went to Üskü-dar for to meet with my friend. When I meet with my friend I didnt speak Turkish very well. I was telling one Word then I was thinking 2 word in turkish. I try to talk a lot. And also I eat Kebap with my friend. Then I went to Kadıköy. I think everybody knows the Fenerbahçe. If somebody says some bad words about Fen-erbahçe in Kadıköy (Please dont do that). You can stay in hospital 1-2 weeks :P Anyway I went to Kadıköy for meet with my school-mate. I made my second dinner in Kadıköy. I and my friend we went to pub for our friends live.

Then I went to Europe side in Istanbul with boat. I went to Beyoğlu (Istiklal Street one of my

best place in İstanbul). I went to club at 12 untill 6 in morning. That was great night. After club I went to drink coffe for to be stand be-

cause I was completely drunk :P then I went to port for to go other side of İstanbul. I and my friend we sitted in the boat and we fell asleep If I remember right. We slept in the boat around 2 hours. Anyway I went to Kadıköy again.

I made first breakfast in Turkey.30 March I went to Bilecik. Bilecik is very small city in Turkey. The population is 60 Thousand. This city is little bid important for his-tory because The ottoman empire was established in this area. Also 30 march was important. Beacuse there was elections in Turkey. I stayed in Bilecik 5 days. Because I studied high school in this city. I met with my last bandfriends. I

met with my friends, parents, my teachers. Acctually 9 days wasnt enough for to do those things. But I tried my best. Anyway. I went to Eskişehir at 4th April. I met with my schoolmate. He is working and studying one of the best hospital in Eskişehir. I went this hospital. I hope One day I can work there. Me and my friends went to pub Street in Eskişehir. Then we went to home and all the night we played guitar and singed. Then 5th Aptil I went to Istanbul for visit my aunt and 6th April I came back Kalamata.

Everything was perfect but except political things. Have a nice craic.

Before to come here, I thought too much about that Greek people will like me or no. In my brain a lot of question I had. But finally EVS started and day by day everything was improv-ing better. Slowly I tried to know people and I wanted real friendship. After I could it. I had too good people. Of course I’m happy for it. I lived here with people who were here. Potato pan

Recipe is:

• Potato 3 pieces• Tomato 2 • Onion 1• Spices

Now the process:

• Cut the skin of the potato and clean it

• Cut the potato circles• Cut the tomato circles • Cut the onion circles • Put all of it in the pan and

put olive oil• Put a little pit water • Put the spices and cover it

by aluminum• Put it in the oven 4 1.5 h• Enjoy and eat.
