On the Internet, they say thatcontent is king. The same holdstrue for the Link newsletter. It issupposed to reflect the interests andideas of the Motorsport Club ofOttawa.

We, in MCO, have such a hugevariety of outlets available tomembers interested in racingincluding road racing, ovalskarting, rally, marshals and crew.

The Link provides a voice for thoseexperiences. But to do so, it mustget content from the membersPlease, take the time out fromworking on the car, and let yourfriends and acquaintances know

    about your efforts.

The recent issues have been shorterthan in previous months. In the lastyear (this is the first issue of mysecond year as editor), I have notrefused any submissions. The Linkis shorter now because I amreceiving fewer submissions. Lesscontent = less pages.

While I know this plea does not fall

on deaf ears, I know that racing canbe all consuming on our schedulesI suffer from a lack of time myselfHowever, it can be equallyrewarding to jot down a few notesabout your trials and tribulations, asit is to be at the track. Link articlesalso count towards worker points.

I look forward to being the one ofthe mediums by which the MCOmembers can talk with each other.

    Dear Link,

On behalf of the Ottawa Citroen Club, I would like to thank Motorsport Club of Ottawa for your support of our recent Rdezvous 2001 event, held August 10-12, in Winchester. Dur

the course of the weekend, we welcomed over 75 people, aaround 20 Citroen automobiles, including DS, Sport Maser2CV, and even a 1953 Traction Avant. Participants came frMontreal, Toronto, Belleville, Quebec City, Boston, and of couOttawa.

Your gracious loan of a set traffic cones helped us to organize First Annual Citroen Olympic games on Sunday morning. Tcones were used in the spectacular culmination of the gamesslalom in which the blindfolded drivers were assisted by sighnavigators. Such games are a regular part of Citroen gatheriin Europe, but we believe this was a first for a North Americmeeting. Our competitors, who ranged in age from 22 to were unanimous that the games were an excellent addition to oschedule.

Special thanks to Dave Jones, for his help in getting access to cones, and to Pat Weightman for his help in returning them.

All for now,Bob McLeodRendezvous Co-organizerOttawa Citroen Club

The following recent additions havebeen made to the website.

    On-Line Discussion Forums:

The new on-line discussion forumallows members and non-members tocommunicate via a web basedinterface. This is an evolution (orsome might think a de-evolution) ofour current email based list serverfunctionality provided by Anjura.

The current system requires you toregister by sending an email to theemail server, then all messages sent [email protected] get sent to all thepeople that registered for the service.

The new system simply requires youto have web access, but you'll nolonger be tied to a computer at whichyou can access your email account.Simply hurl the following URL in toany browser

    http://www.mco.org/forum

There is also a link to the forumsavailable from the main website. Byaccessing the URL above, the browserputs you in to the online forum listing. As a non-registered user, you can

browse the topics, and read themessages. In order to reply and postmessages, you must register with thewebsite. It is free, and only requiresyou to enter a very small amount ofmandatory information. Theinformation remains in control of

MCO website administrator, and is notdistributed.

The forums that are currentlyavailable, which categorize themessages in to topics include ageneral discussion area, competitionspecific areas based on discipline(Solo II, Solo I, Rally, Karting, Road

Racing) and it also includes a WantAds/For Sale area for those peoplewho are looking to buy or sell things. This should allow club members toopenly communicate more effectively- I hope that more people will use thisservice over the previous email list. Both services will remain up, until atime at which the lesser used servicewill likely be turned off.

    Racer/Team Bios on MCO Website:

If any race teams would like to have a

biography of their team, MCO isoffering to put up photos, andinformation for any team wishing tohave a little space of their own on theweb. Pass along images and copy toyour friendly neighborhoodwebmaster, and we'll spin it up foryou!

    ProTruck#2 - Rebuiltand Racing Again

    DATE: Sunday, August 20th,2001

The ProTruck #2's was off andracing after an intense effort bythe Main Street Racing Team afterlast race's contact with the Wall. The extra care showed as the Pro-Truck driven by Kenny Bairdworked its way from 7th to nosinginto 1st in the first half of the fea-ture. While Ken was working ongetting into first, Tim Kirby's #10bumped and spun Ken's truck, sending Ken to the back of thepack for causing a caution. Kenworked his way back through thepack to seventh again. And thistime, close contact in Corner Oneloosened some of the new bodypanels enough that Ken had to goto the pits for repairs. Ah, well, that's racing. Tim Kirby won therace, followed by Gilles Seguinand Dave Riopelle, after DannyYeas had led for most of the race, losing his position in the very lastlap.

Everything was back in order forSaturday's Autodrome St. Eus-

tache in Montreal Cummins Rac-ing Event with ProTrucks andCASCAR. Ken Baird and SteveYendall were the only Ottawadrivers in the ProTruck Series

Races. CASCAR had more Otta-wa drivers, with Carp's SteveMunro and Ottawa's Al Long bat-tling it out for first with Al Longgetting the win.

Sounds like the Mini-Stocks atCapital City, with Dave Watchornand Martin Walter. They seem tohave running first and seconddown to a fine art. This past Wed-nesday saw Dave win. These guysare a treat to watch. The Mini-Stocks have great cars this yearand one of the most popular seriesfor drivers and fans alike. And,talking about popular drivers, theProStock driver Earl Wylie, hisengine blew up big time. Well, last we heard form Earl, he was al-ready planning where to get thenext motor and how to be readyfor Wednesday Night Racing.

Last Wednesday at Capital CitySpeedway definitely was a FanEvent for Action, but a bit hard onthe pocket books of the Drivers. This week, August 15th, is regularracing with the ProTruck, Mini-legends, Mini-stocks, Hobbystockand Four for Fun, for those thatwant a less expensive taste of rac-ing. The next week, August 22nd,Race Vehicles be out and shiningfor Fan Appreciation Day at Capi-tal City Speedway.

Special thanks to the Crew at MainStreet Racing for all the excellentwork to get the ProTruck out therefor the Races. Colin, Pam andChris Lewis spent more time in the

garage than home last week, andLeo Constantinou brought greatpizza and great good humour tothe scene. Best Wishes to himthese days - he and his most pa-tient spouse are expecting theirfirst born any day now; Makeshim run for that cell phone when itrings.

How to Identify Rally Feverby Jean MacGillivray

Interest in rallying at MCO continues togrow by yumps and bounds, and I knowof several homes where there's noshortage of rally talk. I thought it mighthelp to identify some of the moresignificant signs that your rallymeister isin the throes of rally fever.

You know rally fever is high when... you take HIS car on vacation because ithas the rally computer and you have todo an odo check for an upcoming rally

you ALWAYS have to eject a rally tapefrom the VCR before inserting your own

you have one calendar dedicated only torally events

he convinces you to sell your BMW andget a Subaru Impreza

he considers the proper way throughcorners to be sideways

he refers to old snow tires as "graveltires"

he considers a bash plate to be anappropriate upgrade

he speaks with reverence of "big lights" he searches out back roads to test theyumps. He insists that you come along toshare the fun.

he always takes the long way home fromwork...on gravel roads

you're waiting for him to say he needs aroll cage and a five-point harness

he's gone for 12 hours at a time checkingout new rally routes

he spends hours at the computer workingout checkpoints, times, etc.

he realizes the weekend's over and hehasn't spent any of it with you

he finally convinces you to rally withhim and he wants you to drive

you agree to drive 3 hours each way toattend an event hosted by another club

he tells you about all the interesting newpeople he's met...they all rally he considers a lifestyle that doesn'tinclude rallying to be unendurable

    Mosport Marshallingby Richard Muise

This is why everyone interested in motorracing should become a marshal.

I was on yellow flags for the AmericanLeMans Series (Sunday August 19), and itwas streaming down rain. Behind me was

a row of photographers with giganticzoom lenses, and far to my left was thelive TV feed to NBC.

But that didn't matter. Before me laycorner-5, a majestic sweeping dive downfrom corner-4 to a hairpin with a massiveelevation change that is never adequatelyvisualized from pictures. The pace car hadalready been by twice, leading the field tothe green. Even the marshal's with years, decades of experience would not guess atwhat the first lap would bring when wetalked over lunch. At the front of the packwere the "big boys", the LeMans

prototypes, LMP900's. The first rowwas the factory Audi team R8s,followed by one of the beautiful redPanoz front-engined prototypes and a

private Audi R8. The pack wasscattered irregularly behind, withmany fast cars starting at the back ofthe field due to mechanical issuesduring qualifying. Something had tohappen and quickly, as the racingorder sorted itself out. In thestreaming rain.

Because of the expectation that thissorting process may not be peaceful, all the flaggers were moved backfrom their normal positions near thewall and tire barriers. Our cornercaptain gave us the signal that the greenflag was out, and at the same time, theroar of the cars on full throttle down the

pit straight made its way across thefacility to our corner. The race PA systemannounced that all cars were cleanlythrough the first corner without incident, and gave information on the next corner

before the sound of the fast approachingpack drowned out the PA. A few morequick glances at the captain, trying to readthe status, but I received no indications

before the leaders appeared at the top of

    the far hill, corner-4.

They were approaching me head-on atspeed for the first time. Great walls ofwater rose from the rear of the leadingcars, obscuring most of the trailers, including the ones that we expected would

be moving forward through the pack.Corner-5 is a hard braking zone, a hairpin

before the back straight. The braking zoneis actually up a 100-foot elevation change, and hard to the right before the second

right that is the slowest part of the course.

And before my very eyes, it happened. The Big One. Drivers not willing toconcede space on the rain drenched cornerthat narrowed too quickly. With the firstPanoz LMP900 behind it (up from third),the lead Audi #1 tried to brake late to

protect the position. There was no way itcould make the corner when it lost

traction under braking. It spun 270degrees and came directly towards ussideways with unchecked velocity. Allthree flaggers ran away from its trajectory.Behind me, I could sense the samemovement from the row of sports

photographers, scattering in all directionsbackward. The third Audi, the privateer#38 also lost control trying to avoid thefirst spin and spun into the gravel trap tothe left. The Panoz, which now inheritedthe lead also had problems with brakingand ran wide, putting 2 wheels off thetrack but continued.

I remember taking the yellow flag withme, and as the first Audi hit the wall, Iflinched, turned around and started tofuriously wave the flag. From out of themiddle of the field came the secondPanoz. It had nowhere to go, and notenough traction to either make the corneror stop. It came like a train to the wallhitting hard ten feet in front of me at anoblique angle, just missing the first Audithat was now trying to leave the gravel.

The drivers didn't seem to accept that their

cars were broken, and all three carsimmediately tried to leave, but could not.(None of the drivers were hurt). The #1Audi appeared to be the best off, but hadhit the tire barrier sideways. The #38 Audiwas only stuck in the gravel trap and hadno damage, but had to be towed out. ThePanoz was a wreck. The driver tried toreverse out of the tires and back into therace, but the front wheels were no longer

pointing straight, and he was missing afair bit of bodywork. Within a minute or

so we had a number of trucks to get thecars out of the corner, clean up the mess, and attend to the drivers if they wereinjured.

It took between 7 to 10 minutes to get allthe mess cleared, the safety vehicles offthe track and the marshals back in

position. The entire time, I was stillwaving one yellow flag and holding the

second yellow out steady; my arms wereso tired.

The racing resumed and we had sometime to relax. But a few laps later, Porsche911 GT3-RS #30 lost it coming into ourcorner. The driver almost caught the slide,

but only managed to delay the trip out tothe tire barrier. He hit hard, ending hisrace with body parts all over the dirtleading up to the tires. Again, another 5+minutes of full course yellow, with awaved yellow in our corner.

That was the story of much of our day in

corner-5. We had a few more spins inthe ALMS race, but all continuedwithout contact with our well-usedwall.

The day had started in the samemanner, lots of rain, lots of clean up.

But that's not to say that the weekendwas about incidents. As marshal, youget to watch racing from the second

best location (after the driversthemselves). And there was lots ofgreat racing. Aside from ALMS,there were also races for open wheel(Star Mazda, ChampCar Lite, andFormula 1600's), Panoz GT Pro,Canada Cup. I worked at corner 8

during Saturday qualifying (it's at the endof the back 'straight'), and corner-2 duringFriday practice. Corner-8 was amazing towatch when the big prototypes topped thehill at speed.

I got to work with some great people.Marshaling is a great deal of fun, mixedwith some periods of hard work (runningwith fire extinguishers should be an eventin the next Olympics). Saturday evening, all the marshals even got their ownautograph session and some kind words

from Ron Fellows (Corvette Racing #3),who was forced to show us his Rolex (the

back was engraved with "Winner 2001Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona").

I can't encourage people enough to getinvolved in marshaling. The experiences Ihad at my first Mosport weekend will staywith me for a very very long time. It wasthe best vacation I've had this year!

    Main Street Racing -Press Release

Good, Smooth Racing for Ken Bairdand the CARQUEST ProTruck #2Capital City Speedways Feature Race.

    DATE: Sunday, August 20th, 2001

Wednesday Night's Feature Race withthe ProTrucks at Capital City Speed-way was good, clean racing in front ofa packed Grandstand. There were onlytwo cautions, one in the first half andone in the second, and racing finishedwithin the specified time limits. Noiseconcerns are being met by the tracklimiting the time on each race to ap-proximately one minute per lap. Thismeans the 30 Lap feature has to becompleted within the 30 minutes allot-ted. Cautions could potentially use up

a lot of race time so all were glad thecautions were slight.

Ken came in Fourth in his heat race, right behind one of our other NorthGower Drivers, Steve Yendall. Ste-phen Benoit won the Heat. The Fea-ture win went to Carp's Steve Munrowith Ken, working his way up from aninth place start, finishing in Fifth po-sition out of a field of seventeen. SteveYendall was Seventh and Matt Moffitt, our other North Gower ProTruck driv-er, was Eleventh not a usual finishing

position for this successful young driv-er. All the North Gower ProTrucksfinished with little to do to make themready for the Wednesday Night's Rac-ing except the perennial setup work to

    continuously improve performance.

North Gower's CASCAR Driver, LylePerkins, did well at the Raindate Raceon Sunday, August 19th. He finishedwell and had good racing and little tofix as well. Ron Beauchamp fromOrmstown Quebec won the CASCARFeature.

Dave Watchorn and Martin Walter ofNorth Gower took one win each for theheats, and Martin got First and DaveSecond in the Feature. I wonder whatthese two neighbours talk about duringthe week trade set up notes and thenmay the best driver win? Lots of fun towatch anyway you look at it. Was niceto see Chris Dunham make them workfor their wins. He was third and sec-ond respectively in the heats, makingthe North Gower boys work just a littlebit harder.

Earl Wylie had a rather spectacularcrash on Wednesday night driving hisold hobbystock, while he waits for anengine for his Pro Stock. His throttlestuck on and he went right over thewall between corner One and Two.When the car stopped it looked like hehad neatly parked it beside the fence.Earl was ok and his hobbystock isfixed and ready to race again Wednes-day.

This Wednesday, the 22nd of August,

is Fan Appreciation Night at CapitalCity Speedway, so bring your camerasand autograph book as your favouritedrivers will be parking on the track forthe audience to come and see close up

the Cars and ProTrucks with an oppotunity to speak with the drivers anfind out a bit more about motorsporin Ottawa.

DATE: Friday, August 24th, 2001Fan Appreciation Night is MainStreet Racing's opportunity tomeet the fans who make Motor-sports so popular. Drivers like KenBaird talk to fans, sign autographs, and have giveaways as thanks tothe audience for making OvalTrack Racing possible in Ottawa. This Wednesday Night was no ex-ception. Matt Moffitt's team evenhad a special draw of 4 MTM Rac-ing Jackets, which at least one

North Gower Fan was very happyto win. The fans were visiting onthe track so long at intermissionthat is was lucky the ProTruckFeature was a fine example ofgreen flag racing with the newCity's time limits on Racing. NoCautions and Kemptville's KevinRamsay won the Feature Race, leaving plenty of time for the MiniStocks, the Mini Legends, Pro-Stock and HobbyStock Features.Of the North Gower Drivers, MattMoffitt finished ninth, Ken finish-

ed twelfth, Steve Yendall four-teenth having trouble with histransmission.

Mini Stocks what can anyonesay it was Dave Watchorn andthen Martin Walter, it was Martinthen Dave, it was Dave and thenMartin the saga continues. Greatfun to watch these guys duel it out,

especially now that the other driv-ers are giving them such a run fortheir money.
