    Articulation

    Consists of bringing an articulator

into contact with a point ofarticulation

    Tongue- most mobile of all

articulatorsx Can move from front to back

x Can move up and down

x Can move from side to side

Tongue can be divided into five

    regionsx Tongue tip (called apex)

    x Tongue front

    x Tongue center

x Tongue back ( called dorsum)

We oftern designate the part of

tongue involved in articulationx Fronto-adjective indicating front part of the

    tongue

    x Dorso-adjective indicating back(dorsum)of

    the tongue

    Teeth

x Since they are immobile, the upper and the

lower teeth are classified as points of

articulationx Sounds articulated at either the upper or

    lower teeth are called Dental

x The term Dental refers to a point ofarticulatiom

    Description of Articulation

x When we describe the articulation of a

    speech sound,we indicate both the

articulator and the point of articulationx If the articulator is the lower lip and the

point of articulation is the upper teeth, we

combine the terms labial(for lip) anddental(for teeth) labio-dental

    Alveolar Ridge

x Just behind the upper front teeth, there is a gum

    ridge called the alveolar ridge

x Sounds articulated at this ridge are calledalveolar sounds or alveolars

x In the pronunciation ofto the tip of the tongue

touches the alveolar ridgex We call this sound linguo -alveolar or apico-

    alveolar

    Palate

x The roof of the mouth is called the palate

x It begins just behind the dorsum of the tongue

and ends above the dorsum of the tonguex Front part since it is hard is callled the hard

    palate

x Soft part-located at rear of mouth is called thevelum

    22/32

Both hard and soft parts of velum

are points of articulationx Sounds articulated at hard palate are

    calledpalatals

x Sounds articulated at the velum are calledvelars

    Uvula

x Refers to the small flexible flap whichhangs

from the back of the velum

x The dorsum(back) of the tongue contactsthe uvula to produce dorso-uvular sounds

x In English the uvula is not an important

point of articulationx In French the r has a uvular trilled sound

    Pronounce the word kit

x The dorsum of the tongue touches the

    velum

    x We call this a dorso-velar sound

    Maximum Closure

The point of maximum closure in oral

cavity during the production of aspeech sound is also referred to as

    the point of articulation

    Pharyngeal Sounds

x In Arabic ,the root of tongue comes in

contact with the back wall of the pharynx

x We call these sounds pharyngeals

x We have no pharyngeal sounds in English

    Nasal Sounds

x Unlike the oral cavity, the size and shape of the

    nasal cavity are fixed

x They cannot be modifiedx The nasal cavity is separated from the oral

    cavity by the palate

    x

Oral sounds resonate in the oral cavityxNasal sounds resonate in the nasal cavity

    Nasal Quality

x Sounds have a nasal quality if they are

    resonated in the nasal cavity

x When the velum is raised the passage intothe nasal cavity is closed

x When the velum lowers a slight nasal

    quality will occur

    Pronounce no

x The apex of the tongue touches the alveolar

    ridge

x It will register an apico-alveolar sound

x Because the velum drops it resonates in the

    nasal cavity

x We call the sound apico-alveolar nasal
