The waveguide consists of aspecial nickel-iron alloy with0.7 mm O.D. and 0.5 mm I.D.

A copper conductor is introducedthrough the length of this tube. The start of measurement isinitiated by a short current pulse. This current generates a circularmagnetic field which rotatesaround the waveguide.

A permanent magnet at the pointof measurement is used as themarker element, whose lines offield run at right angles to theelectromagnetic field.

Specialized Interfaces Electrical Options

SSIThe SSI (synchronous serial interface) output interfaces with popular control systemsfrom manufacturers such as Allen-Bradley, Delta Computer, Siemens, Parker, Bosch-Rexroth and many others. Cable spans can be up to 400 m with noise-free operation.Individual, EEPROM linearization of this interface makes it ideal for applications requiringthe best accuracy available.

*S_ _ _ _B Versions

The internal interrogation of the S_ _ _ _B

version is synchronized to the externally

supplied clock pulses. This configuration

results in a more uniform, predictable data

update rate, and is better-suited for highly

dynamic closed-loop servo applications.

Like the standard version, the S_ _ _ _B

version is EEPROM linearized at the

factory.

QuadratureThe quadrature output interfaces directly to standard encoder inputs (90° out ofphase, A & B). This configuration gives you more interface options for connectingto motion based systems. In addition, the Micropulse quadrature outputtransducer has the ability to provide absolute position information through useof its innovative BURST function.

Advantages– Four setpoints detect cylinder end-of-stroke or

anywhere in between– Interfaces to discrete I/O instead of more costly

analog inputs– Upgrade from end-of-stroke sensors– Eliminate multiple external proximity sensors,

brackets, targets, cables, and connection blocks– Eliminate motion controller: run speed/position

ramping profiles with direct-input proportional valve– Installs just like a traditional MDT in probe-ready

steel-walled cylinders– Auto-Tuning™ circuitry allows use of Balluff or

competitors’ magnets– Two easy programming options: local, with handy

programming tool; or remote, using teach-inconnections

Rapid Replacement Module Option

Balluff’s new Rapid Replacement Module (RRM) option allows quickfield replacement without removing the pressure tube from thecylinder, making change-outs easy and cutting equipment downtime.

Advantages of the RRM include:– No hydraulic oil spillage and no need for environmental

containment– No danger from hot oil spilling onto repair personnel– No need to bleed air from hydraulic system after replacement– No danger of dirt entering open hydraulic port– 100% exchange of sensor package eliminates guesswork– Dimensionally identical to standard Balluff Z style for equivalent

output type– Backward-compatible with existing standard Balluff Z style

pressure tubes*– Available for all output types except Profibus, CANopen, and

ProSet4

The RRM can be installed in your maintenance program in a varietyof ways:

– For new installations, you can order optional ZM construction, which includes a Balluff pressure tube along with a RRM pre-installed. To change out this type, you simply remove twohousing screws, replace the RRM, re-tighten the two housingscrews – and you’re done.

– For new installations, you can also order standard Zconstruction, which includes a complete standard transducer. You can still do field swaps on this type by removing thestandard electronics head and internal waveguide element astwo separate components, then replacing both with a singleRRM unit.

– If you already have an installed base of standard Balluff Ztransducers, you can also change them out quickly with theRRM as described above. The RRM easily retrofits into existingBalluff pressure tubes once the old electronics and waveguideelement have been removed.*

– Keep spare RRM units on hand to maintain any Balluff ZM or Zconstruction transducer.

* Synchronized SSI RRM is not backward-compatible to standard pressuretubes used on non-synchronized SSI units. Synchronized SSI RRM onlyfits pressure tube supplied with complete synchronized SSI units.

The propagation time of an ultrasonicwave, induced by magnetostriction, isused to determine the position of themagnet.

The position is output as an analog valuewhich rises. This is done with highprecision and repeatability within themeasuring area designated as thenominal stroke length. If there is nomagnet within the measuring area, anerror signal is output. At the rod end is adamping zone. When a magnet is in thiszone the output is spurious. The electricalconnection between the transducer, thecontroller and the power supply isaccomplished using a cable or pigtail.

P510 interface

Compatible with Balluff BTAprocessors, controllers, and modulesfrom various manufacturers, includingSiemens, B & R, Bosch, PhoenixContact, Mitsubishi, Sigmatek, Parker,Esitron, WAGO, AB and others.Reliable signal transmission even overcable lengths of up to 500m betweenthe BTA processor and the transduceris assured by the especially noise-immune RS485 differential drivers andreceivers. Noise signals are effectivelysuppressed.

P510 universal for rising andfalling edge evaluation

As a consequence of different controlphilosophies, digital pulse interfacesare available in two different typesdepending on the controller.

The difference is in which edge is usedfor processing. In the “P-interface” thefalling edges are used for timing and inthe “M-interface” the rising edges.

To reduce the number of differentmodels to a minimum, the “P510-interface” was created as a universalpulse interface which combines bothfunctions.

The reference point for thepropagation time measurement is the“Start” pulse.

High-accuracy digitizing chip forP510 pulse interface

Companies who develop their owncontrol and processing electronics canuse the Balluff digitizing chip toimplement a highly accurate P-typeinterface at low cost and without greateffort. The digitizing chip wasdeveloped as a high-resolution,parameterizable ASIC for Micropulsetransducers having a P-type pulseinterface.

Block diagram of the P-interface

Note 1: Ordering code version “N” is a single-ended, TTL compatible START/STOP version. This version does not use Interrogate (-)or START/STOP (-). Pins 3 and 6 should be left unconnected for “N”-type transducers.

04/13/2012 - Updated certification information. Only the online version of this page was revised. Information in the printed catalog has not been updated.

Only the rod section of the transducer may extend into Zone 0. To ensure safe isolation between Zone 0 and Zone 1, the relevant safety regulations detailed in IEC/EN60079-26 must be strictly adhered to. The transducer must be installed in a manner that will result in a sufficiently tight joint (IP67) or flameproof joint (IEC/EN60079-1) between the less hazardous area and Zone 0.

When using a float magnet, it is necessary that a static discharge between the transducer rod and the inner portion of the float be prevented. The floats listed in the accessory section (5.2) are designed so that, in normal operation, the float is tilted, thereby ensuring mechanical contact between the transducer rod and the float wall. Do not use other types of floats or attempt to disable this design feature.

Note: The transducer is not approved for use in location classified as Zone 0 under North American guidelines.

Autotuning Circuitry

Patented Autotuning circuitry in Balluff Micropulse®

transducers automatically compensates for changes in thestrength of the magnetostrictive return signal.

Automatically compensates for changes in temperature, providing a more stable signal over a wide temperaturerange.

For Micropulse profile-style transducers using a floatingmagnet configuration, Autotuning ensures that the returnsignal remains stable, even if the distance from magnet totransducer varies.

Introduction

R Low-Profile Style

Ultra-low Profile

The low-profile “R” housing is designedto be mechanically compatible withlegacy linear potentiometers. Thecenterline at the control rod is the samevertical location as the rod on manypopular “pots.” However, the R styleprovides long-life, non-contactmagnetostrictive technology that willoutlast any wear-prone linearpotentiometer.

Accurate Linear PositionMeasurementThe Micropulse® AT is a superioralternative to traditional low-cost linearfeedback devices such as linearpotentiometers (pots). Balluff designedthe Micropulse AT in a modular fashionto simplify manufacturing and reducecomponent costs to be competitivewith these devices.

The main advantage of theMicropulse AT is the non-contact,wear-free magnetostrictive sensingprinciple. Linear potentiometers, bycontrast, are electro-mechanicaldevices that utilize a moving wipercontact riding along a resistiveelement. Both the wiper contact andthe resistive element are subject towear from repeated operation andcontinuous machine vibration.Abrasive contaminants are able toenter the potentiometer housingthrough the mechanical seals, furtheraccelerating wear – leading to erraticposition signals.

With no moving parts, theMicropulse AT is impervious toenvironmental contamination such asdust and grit. It is also shock andvibration rated for use in demandingindustrial applications. The convenientM12 connector assures easyinstallation and quick replacementwithout the need to remove andreinstall hardwired cabling.

The round housing of the Micropulse ATallows the unit to be rotated to sensethe position magnet in multipledirections, enhancing installationflexibility. The position magnet is afloating design, meaning no mechanicallinkage is required, saving cost andreducing installation complexity. Linkageis eliminated as a source of backlasherror. No mechanical linkage alsoeliminates over-stroking as a potentialsource of sensor breakage andproduction downtime.

Digital Pulse Interface P11_Profile Series A1

P110-Interface

Compatible with various OEM controls,e.g., Siemens, Schleicher, B & R, Bosch,Mitsubishi, Schiele, Parker, Esitron,WAGO, etc.

Reliable signal transmission, even overcable lengths up to 500 m between BTLand controller, is assured by theespecially noise-immune RS422differential drivers and receivers. Noisesignals are effectively suppressed.

P110 Rising/Falling in a SingleInterface

Based on differing philosophies, twocontroller-specific interfaces have beenestablished for the digital pulseversions. The difference lies in how theedges are processed.

In the "P" interface the falling edges andin the "M" interface the rising edges areprocessed.

To reduce the amount of part numbers, the "P110 interface" has beendeveloped which combines bothfunctions.

The reference point for the propagationtime measurement is the "Start" pulse.

Benefits

– High resolution

– Position data from 2 magnets canbe processed simultaneously

– 4/8-bit processor interface

P111 InterfaceCost savings using DPI/IP for start-up and installation

DPI/IP is a protocol for direct datainterchange between a controller andtransducer. The signal lines are used tosend additional information such asmanufacturer, stroke length andwaveguide gradient. This allows start-up or replacement of a transducerwithout having to make manual changesin the controller parameters.

With the P110 start/stop digital output, both the rising and the falling edges ofthe signal are precisely controlled, allowing the flexibility to match thecontroller interface requirements with asingle part number.

BTLAT

From optional to standard:an industry example

Micropulse transducers have longbeen standard in the plasticsmachinery industry on high-precisionmachines and offered on standardmachines as a non-contact option topotentiometric systems.

The Micropulse AT and ATvantagehave been designed in cooperationwith development engineers from theplastics machinery industry. The ATfamily is competitively priced andmeets all the technical demands ofthe industry.

With the introduction of MicropulseAT transducers, downtimes can bereduced to a minimum – not just onhigh-end specialty machines, but onstandard production models as well.

Introduction

Track two motions with one system

– The ATvantage senses two motionsat the same time

– Two magnets provide two userprogrammable analog outputs forstroke length and rising 0-10 V orfalling 10-0 V signals – set your zeroand span points anywhere between

– Significant cost reduction with onetransducer taking the place of two

Micropulse AT and ATvantage – ideal for use in injection molding machines

Senses two motionsat the same time!

100% Field-Scalable

Advanced, multi-function trackingcapability in one transducer

The Balluff Micropulse® ATvantagestarts with all the advantages of theMicropulse AT, and adds two-magnetoperation to detect two independentmachine motions or speeds at the sametime in the same installation. The addedability to track single stroke/dual motionmachine functions (such as clamp/ejecton a plastic injection molding machine)allows a single transducer to performthe same function as two separatetransducers.

– 100% adjustable analog signal

– LED indicator for programmingassistance

– Separate teach-in for all zero andspan points

– Selectable dual position or singleposition plus differentialmeasurement modes

Higher performance, longer life,lower cost

– With no moving parts, theMicropulse AT’s non-contactmagnetostrictive sensingtechnology is far superior to wearprone electro-mechanical contactdesigns such as potentiometers

– Impervious to dust, grit, shock, andvibration and rated for use in a widevariety of industrial applications

Teach-in

Used for changing the factory set nulland end point with a new null and endpoint. First the magnet must bebrought to the new null point and thento the new end position, and therespective values stored by pressingthe button.

Using the ATvantage

Two moving members on a machineoften travel in the same direction. Eachaxis normally requires a separatefeedback sensor.

With the Micropulse AT you can nowsense both movements at the same timewith just one transducer having twoanalog outputs.

The position of the respective null andend points can be set individually usingtwo programmable inputs.

Modes

The two ranges may be adjacent, mayoverlap, and can be programmed for arising or falling output signal. Thetransducer can be operated using oneor two magnets.

If one magnet leaves the programmedrange or if only one is present, theposition is indicated on Output 1.Output 2 then indicates an error value.

Mode for differential measurement between 2 magnets Mode selection

The standard function isseparate measurement oftwo positions.

The programming inputsare used to switch over todifferential mode.

Programming example:Differential travel 50 % nominal stroke = 10 V differential signal

Introduction

General Specifications .. pg 104Accessories ..................... pg 105

Micropulse BIW

Non-Contact Performance, Standard FormFactor, Linear Potentiometer Price

The Micropulse BIW uses patented pulsed-inductive measurement technologyto provide 0-10 Vdc or 4-20 mA position feedback in a form factor identicalto many wear-prone resistive linear potentiometers. Unlike linearpotentiometers, the BIW’s non-contact technology assuresyears of trouble free operation.

Features:

– Plunger-style form factor providesfor drop-in replacement of linearpotentiometers

– Non-Contact Sensing Technology

– No External Electronics

– Analog Outputs:

– 0-10 Vdc / 10-0 Vdc

– 4-20mA / 20-4 mA

Applications:

The Micropulse BIW is ideal forapplications such as:

– Plastic injection molding machinery

– Packaging machinery

– Hydraulic and pneumatic motionbases / flight simulators

Principle of Operation

The BIW inductive linear position transducer is based on a new, patentedprinciple of operation which detects the measured position without contact.

The BIW transducer contains a sender/ receiver element and an oscillatorprotected by an extruded aluminum housing.

The oscillator is attached to a sliding rod which is in turn attached to the movingmember of the machine or equipment. The oscillator is excited by the sendercomponent at a sampling rate of 32 kHz and couples the current position signalinto the receiver element. The position is immediately available on the output asan absolute analog value.

The direction of the output signal – rising or falling – can be determined by howthe output slope connections are made.

Analog Interface Modules andDigital Displays

Analog Interface ModuleThe versatile BTM module converts aSTART/STOP digital pulse signal froma Micropulse transducer into user-scalable analog position and/orvelocity information. In addition, theBTM module can be used to provide aposition signal from up to 4 magnetson a single Micropulse transducer.Since the conversion from digital signalinto analog signal takes place in theclose proximity to the analog inputdevice, a high degree of signal noiseimmunity can be achieved.

Digital Interface ModuleThe BTM-H1 module converts aSTART/STOP digital pulse signal froma Micropulse transducer into paralleldigital outputs (up to 23-bits,depending on transducer length). The output data format is user-selectable binary, BCD, or Gray code. The BTM-H module also provides a24-bit Synchronous Serial Interface(SSI) signal. User-selectableresolutions, and a super-fast updaterate make the BTM-H1 a high-performance interface solution.

Digital DisplaysRanging from simple, low costdisplays to allow visual positionmonitoring up to full-featured displayswith programmable setpoints andserial communication capabilities,Balluff offers a display product to meetany application requirement.

Terminology& Testing

Temperature CoefficientExpressed as ppm/°C or °F, TC isthe degree to which the outputsignal (and therefore the indicatedposition) is affected by ambienttemperature changes.

Non-LinearityThe degree to which the outputvalue from the Micropulse transducersystem is not perfectly proportionalto travel distance. Standardtransducers show a non-linearity ofmax. ±0.02% full scale. Example: a24-inch stroke BTL5 with analogoutput may output a position valuewhich is 0.0048" greater or less thanthe true, absolute position. Thisvalue is repeatable, however, towithin 0.0002" (see “resolution” and“repeatability”). For higher accuracyrequirements, Micropulsetransducers with Synchronous SerialInterface (SSI) can be used.

HysteresisThe difference in indicated positionwhen the same point is reached fromtwo different directions. Repeatabilityrefers to travel from one directiononly, hysteresis from two directions.

RepeatabilityThe degree to which the indicatedposition point B as represented bythe output value is reproduced whenmoving in one direction from point Aand back to point B. In the case of aBTL5 system, position repeataccuracy is always the same as thestated resolution + hysteresis.

Digital Pulse Output(all housings)For digital pulse-output systems (i.e. Start/Stop or PWM) resolution is determined bythe clock frequency of the customerinterface which measures the time intervalbetween the Start pulse and the Stoppulse (or the rising and falling edges of thePWM signal). Resolution can bedetermined as follows:

Resolution (in inches) =1 ÷ (Gradient x Clock Frequency)

The gradient value is printed on the labelof each transducer and is expressed inmicroseconds per inch (μsec/inch).

The Clock Frequency is the frequency ofthe counter in the customer suppliedinterface and is usually expressed inmegahertz (MHz).

Example - assuming a gradient value of9.000 μs/inch and a clock frequency of56 MHz

Resolution (in inches)= 1 ÷ (9 x 56)= 1 ÷ 504= 0.00198”

Dead ZoneThe end of the Micropulsetransducer rod, from end of stroke tothe end of the rod. This is usually thelast 2.3 inches of the rod. If themagnet enters the dead zone theoutput will be unpredictable.

Null SpaceThe distance from the head of thetransducer to the start of theelectrical stroke.

Null PositionThe position of the magnet on thetransducer rod which reads a zero orminimum output.

StrokeThe active electrical portion or thesensing portion of the Micropulsetransducer.

AnalogThe output of the transducer is ananalog voltage(0 to 10 Vdc, -10 to +10 Vdc,or -5 to 5 Vdc) or an analog current(0 to 20 mA, 4-20 mA) and isproportional to the position of themagnet.

Digital Pulse OutputThe output of thetransducer is a digital Start/Stoppulse or a Pulse Width Modulated(PWM) signal. Magnet position isdirectly proportional to the timeinterval between the Start pulse andthe Stop pulse (or the rising andfalling edges of the PWM signal). Anexternal counter is required tomeasure this time interval.A wide variety of processor cards,PLC plug-in cards, and stand-alonecontrollers designed around thisinterface are available.

Digital Serial OutputThe output of the transducer is in theform of a serial data word or string inSSI (binary or Gray code) or CANbusformat.

Terminology and Testing

Digital Serial Systems (SSI, Canbus, etc.)Resolution is a defined value, stated ininches.

Digitally-Derived Analog (Z housing,rod-style only)Output resolution is expressed as 16-bits.The digital position information isconverted into an analog signal internallythrough a digital-to-analog converter.

True Analog (all other housing styles)The analog output is derived without usinga digital-to-analog converter. Resolutionfor this type of system is virtually infinite.Attainable resolution is determinedprimarily by electrical noise inherent to theapplication, and input resolution of thecontrol system.

ResolutionThe smallest increment of position changethat can be detected by the transducer. The resolution of Micropulse transducersdepends on the output type chosen.

Analog voltage output

The output voltage isdirectly proportional to theposition of the magnet alongthe waveguide.

The most importantparameter for analog outputsis the refresh rate and theripple of the output signal. Many transducers on themarket attain the specifiedvalues for output ripple onlyby means of low-passfiltering. This always carrieswith it an undesirable timedelay of the output signal.

Micropulse transducers attainthe specified signal qualitywithout extensive low-passfilters, instead usingimproved circuit design. Thismeans fast update times withlow levels of ripple and noiseon the output signal.Micropulse transducers withvoltage output have 2outputs, one increasing andone decreasing.

Available versions include:

0...10 V (10...0 V)

-10...10 V (10...-10 V) and

-5...5 V (5 V...-5 V)

Analog current output

The output signal is directlyproportional to the magnetposition along thewaveguide. Analog currentinterfaces of 0...20 mA and4...20 mA are standard innumerous applications and inmany industries. Currentinterfaces are significantlyless sensitive to inducednoise than are analog voltageinterfaces. A 500 Ohmresistor can be used to easilyconvert the 0..20 mA signalinto a voltage of 0...10 V. The4...20 mA signal provides asimple form of cable breakmonitoring, since even at thenullpoint of the stroke acurrent of 4 mA must flow.Micropulse transducers withcurrent output are availablewith increasing or decreasingsignals.

Pulse interface

The time between aninterrogation and the replysignal is directly proportionalto the position of the magnetalong the waveguide. Thesepulses are transmitted usingRS485/422 differential linedrivers, guaranteeing noise-free signal transmission overdistances of up to 500 m(1640 ft.). The greatadvantage of these interfacesis the noise-immune signaltransmission with a simpleand economical interface.Interfaces with tristateoutputs allow multiplexing ofseveral Micropulsetransducers. Appropriatecontrol cards are available.

SSI synchronous serialinterface

The position of the magnetalong the waveguide is sentto the control serially in theform of a data word.

Micropulse transducers withSSI interface can beconnected directly tocontrols or closed-loopcontrol cards with SSIinterfaces designed forabsolute encoders. The datatransmission from the sensorto the control is synchronizedby means of a clock pulsefrom the control. Dependingon the required resolution, transducers with 24 or 25-bitdata words are available. Themaximum non-linearity of theSSI Micropulse transducer of±30 μm over the entirestroke, the update frequencyof 2 kHz and a resolution of5 μm make the SSIMicropulse transducers anideal feedback sensor, evenin the most demandingapplications.

CANopen

The position of the magnetalong the waveguide is sentover the CAN-Bus to thecontrol in so-called ProcessData Objects, PDOs.Micropulse transducers workwith standard CANopenprotocols per CiA DS 301and with the standard deviceprofile per DS 406. CANopenoffers greater flexibilitybecause of the large numberof configuration options forthe transducer. For example, the resolution isprogrammable for 5, 10, 20or 100 μm, depending onyour application. Or you canselect whether only positionor also velocity informationshall be sent to your control;cyclically, or on-demand. Andthere's more: Up to 4 so-called software cams can bedefined in the active strokerange. Each time the statusof one of these camschanges, high-priorityEmergency messages aresent to the control (checkfactory for availability).
