The FMA Informative has known Sifu/Guro Chris Derbaum for a few years and requested that he submit his journey that he recently did to Singapore. The issue is very interesting for Chris though only originally doing a 2 day seminar which was held on October 17-18, 2015, had an experience from arrival to when Chris and his wife Karla departed Singapore, spending a total of seven days. This is a historic event for representing Kuntao-Chinese/Indonesian Combat Arts, Chris brought his teacher’s art which is Willem Reeders KunTao to Singapore. Now some may say ok, and? Well, one must real-ize the Kuntao has not been taught in Singapore for a long time.

James Lee - SingaporeKuntao (spelled ‘kuntau’) was referenced specifically alongside Judo and Karate by Lee Kuan Yew - Singa-pore’s founding prime minister and himself a Hakka - in a speech in the 1980s, during which he encouraged the people of Singapore to take up martial art to build a ‘rugged and spartan population’. However, the governing authorities of Singapore have had a complex relationship with Kuntao (Kuntau) since the earliest days of independence. The martial arts of the original Chinese diaspora of Southeast Asia were long associated with secret societies and gangsters. Indeed, according to both historical records and oral histo-ries passed down by Masters who lived during those days, martial arts schools and gangs were often one and the same, and the power of a martial arts school was determined not so much by the strength of the system or its individual fighters as by how many men it can gather under its banner. One of its most famous practitioners - Chong Beng Joo of Siong Lim See - was notorious as both a street gang leader and an instructor in kungfu to the police. In 1973, the Martial Arts Control Unit was set up to police the various martial arts schools and shut down those found to be associated with criminal activities, using the powers of both the Internal Security Act of 1960, which allowed for indefinite detention without trial on suspicion of involvement with seditious or crim-inal activities, as well as the Societies Act of 1966, enacted to police political malcontents as well as fronts for criminal activity. This was further backed up by the Martial Arts Instruction Act of 1974, which further clarified the purpose and powers of the MACU in shutting down secret societies affiliated with martial arts schools. Many of the old Kuntau groups were among those most badly affected, with many Masters and practi-tioners arrested and imprisoned for various offences, or under suspicion of involvement with illegal societies according to the Internal Security Act of 1960. Many other schools were run out of business by rising rents and systematic gentrification of their original neighborhoods. Many were refused registration and the legal right to continue teaching their arts on the basis of being too dangerous and/or associated with criminal elements, in effect leading to a soft ban on Kuntau and the other original arts of the Southeast Asian Chinese diaspora until the Martial Arts Instruction Act was repealed by Parliament in 2003.So enjoy, also note Sifu/Guro Derbaum will be returning to Singapore in 2016.

Kuntao-Chinese/Indonesian Combat Arts that is taught by Sifu Chris DerbaumThe Art of Kuntao comes from the once closed door and highly secretive style of Grandmaster Willem Reeder’s (Grandmaster Reeder’s proved his Art in combat while serving in two fronts in Indonesia during WW2). The Family Art of Kuntao was from Macau, China and made its way to Indonesia then America. Sifu Chris has studied Kuntao for 25 years under the following Instructors. Grandmaster Bob Servidio and Master Scott Young of Meadville School of Kung Fu Kune-Tao. Also under guidance Master Guy Savel-li-World Kung Fu Federation (Kuntao) and Sifu Lenny Howie- Florida Kung Fu Federation (Kuntao). Sifu Chris Derbaum has 25 years of experience as a Correctional Officer in the Prison Setting of the Concrete Jungle and has also applied the art of Kuntao in numerous real life situations. His expression of Willem Reeder’s Style is extremely aggressive, brutal and was nicknamed named Prison Kuntao.

Visiting Lasalle College

Visiting Pendekar Temasek at Lasalle Col-lege of the Arts, Singapore. On our first day in Singapore, we had the opportunity to meet Paman Pendekar Temasek, the living legend of traditional Cimande Silat Style, in his very own den. We visited Lasalle College of the Arts where Paman Pendekar was conducting his Silat class to the 2nd year Diploma students in the faculty of Performing Arts. Paman Pendekar Temasek is the Lecturer for traditional Silat at the faculty, teaching silat movements and self-defense in the perspective of academic study. Lasalle Singapore is probably the first and the only academic institutions that endorsed Silat as a course and part of its curriculum and has gain much interest from other arts institutions around the region to come and analyze the uniquely kind of syllabus specially crafted for cultural and performance studies.

Page 4: Lineage of Willem Reeders KunTao First Time Ever in Asiamaharlika-enterprizes.net/Published_FMAmagazines/...Kuntao (spelled ‘kuntau’) was referenced specifically alongside Judo

Paman Pendekar Temasek wasted no time to quickly introduce us to his class of students in whom he tagged them by the Silat nick-name “Tigers of Lasalle.” I noted that it was a brilliant way to address these students in such a stylish way to give them their sense of pride in character building. Paman always advised his students to...“roar hard and make yourself heard” made his students feel the importance of their existence to the arts industry in their future endeavors. We had our chance to introduce ourselves to the class and presented a poster for the Kuntao Seminar in Singapore during the weekend. Paman was so supportive and posted the poster on the Lasalle Activity Wall after the class ended. Every minute interacted with Paman Pendekar was our pleasure and many fruitful moments for us to gain much knowledge about the Cimande old-school traditional silat form and its beautiful cultural heritage. Paman Pendekar enlightened us and presented me with a West Javanese traditional headdress known as “ iket ” and a piece of Sundanese traditional blue Silat outfit to honor our visit. On our part, we are glad to have given Paman Pendekar our Kuntao School T-shirt and my book on Kuntao system for his keeping. Throughout the practice sessions at the green grass area in the middle of Lasalle building, I started observing the way Paman Pendekar conducted his lesson. Paman delivered his teaching so brilliantly fun and exciting, making all his stu-dents enjoy the silat training so much, that I eventually could not help myself but to jump in and join the train-ing as well.

As a Pendekar of Silat , Paman Pendekar has his responsibilities to preach the beauty of Silat Culture and values to everyone who needs guidance from a Pendekar himself. He will travel around the region and be-yond to fulfill his task after the death of his beloved teacher. Paman Pendekar is a freelance Silat Specialist who travels and open up training ground at every places that he visited. That is how he leaves his marks and legacy to be appreciated by the generations to come. May someday we will meet again in another wonderful moment of Silat sharing sessions with the living legends Pendekar Temasek is the guardian of the 600 years old silat Art-Form called Cimande. Every minutes interacting with Paman Pendekar was our pleasure and a fruitful moments for us to gain much knowledge about the Cimande old-school traditional Silat form and its beautiful cultural heritage. Paman Pendekar en-lightened us and pre-sented me with a West Javanese traditional head-dress known as “ iket ” and a piece of Sundanese traditional blue silat outfit to honor our visit. On our part, we are glad to give Paman Pendekar our Kuntao School T-shirt and my books on Kuntao system for his keeping. Through out the practice sessions at the green frass area in the middle of Lasalle building, I started observing the way Paman Pendekar conducted his lesson. Paman delivered his teaching so brilliantly fun and exciting, mak-ing all students enjoying the Silat training so much that I eventually could not help myself but to jump in and join the training as well.Cimande Cimande traditional Silat system has a long decorated heritage of 600 years old history from West Java. I was amazed by the true spirit of Silat inheritance. Cleverly preserved and presented to the new generations with much passions and persistence, true to its origin by Paman Pendekar Temasek. He was very generous in sharing and parting his knowledge without any hesitations. One of the most amazing about Cimande system is the way Cimande practitioners trained their body conditioning to the very maximum in building up strength and endurance holistically. No body parts are left untrained. Skin, muscles, bones are all conditioned to become the weapons and shield of an un-armed human body. I had had my share of Paman Pendekar iron bone’s casual knocks and I was very impressed of how hard his bone can be. Unlike most of the Silat experts who teaches spectacular and stylish self-defence techniques and maneuvers, Paman Pendekar is much more focus on teaching his students the importance of mastering the basic and fundamentals of the Silat it-self. His philosophy is not to focus on teaching the many ways of deadly punches to win a fight, but he stream-down to teach how to create such a deadly punch within the capacity of our own strength and ability. This can only be achieved by under-standing the fundamentals in every techniques

Page 5: Lineage of Willem Reeders KunTao First Time Ever in Asiamaharlika-enterprizes.net/Published_FMAmagazines/...Kuntao (spelled ‘kuntau’) was referenced specifically alongside Judo

that we need to master. Paman Pendekar cunningly showed some of the old-school simple “take-down” maneuvers which most

of us knows well how to do that, but he proved his point when he urged the opponents not to give ways easily and try hard not to fall. Such reactions from our sparring partners naturally make it very difficult to get a clean take-down. It’s almost impos-sible to execute take-down maneu-vers in such a conditions. Eventually, Paman Pendekar shows us what he meant by master-ing the fundamentals. He took us down one after another, no matter how hard we tried to resist. He exe-cuted the maneuvers so beautifully simple and clean, like walking in a park. It was an eye-opener to us. It made us understood with much con-fidence and awareness how import-

ant for us to master the fundamentals. An art, true to its form and its values. Our brother Reza Emmanuel who was also our host for the week-end Kuntao seminar, got some pieces of his understanding too. We both felt overwhelmingly excited to be train again like the old-school style and yet it makes us felt new again. It was already close to lunch hour and how time really flies when you work with a Silat specialist like Paman Pendekar. Shortly, we bid Paman Pendekar good bye and thanks him and his students for the valuable meeting and sharing sessions in Lasalle College Of The Arts, Singapore. An experience that will be remembered with high hope that this meeting will be just the beginning of an era to connect Silat experts from the West and The East like the meeting between Panman Pendaker and Sifu Chris Derbaum.

We got to visit famous Bugis went shopping saw 2 awesome tem-ples and ate at a authentic Singapore Food court called a hawker center. In the mid-1980s, Bugis Street un-derwent major urban redevelopment

into a retail complex of modern shopping malls, restaurants and nightspots mixed with regulated back-alley roadside vendors.Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple is a traditional Chinese temple situ-ated at 178 Waterloo Street in Singapore. Touring Bugis and Temples

Sri Krishnan Temple (a.k.a Sri Krishna Temple), on Waterloo Street was established in 1870. It is the only South Indian Hindu temple in Singapore dedicated exclusively to Sri Krishna and his consort Rukmini.

Day Two

Visiting the Malay Heritage Centre

Reza and friends took us to the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) to learn more the culture of Singapore. Officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in June 2005, the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) pro-vides wonderful cultural exposure and learning opportunities for visitors of all ages and interests. Situated in the Istana Kampong Gelam, Gedung Kuning and the surrounding Kampong Gelam precinct, the Centre acts as a vital heritage institution for the Malay community in Singapore. Malay Heritage Foundation was amazing source of knowledge which even included Silat and the famous Kriss Dagger was dicussed by the tour guide. Singapore was a gateway for many Muslims to get to Meca especially for the Indonesians Muslims. Singapore was shipping survived on being a shipping community.

Piruz was from Indonesian and treated us to his homeland food Authentic Indonesian Cuisine called Nasi Padang. Nasi Padang is a Padagn steamed rice served with various choices of pre-cooked dishes originated from Padang city, the capital of West Sumatra, Indonesia. Nasi Padang (Padang-style rice) is a miniature ban-quet of meats, fish, vegetables, and spicy sambals eaten with plain white rice, it is Sumatra’s most famous ex-port and the Minangkabau’s great contribution to this great dish of Indonesian Cuisine. Great food food thanks to Piruz from Indonesia.

KunTao Private Training

We did the private trainings at Instructor Vinz Low studio in Singapore. His website is (www.zesty-kickz.com) Vinz trained Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Taiji Quan and Capoeira in Martial Arts. Vinz is a weekly columnist for An-gloInfo Fitness Spotlight, contributing articles on health and fitness issues. He was also featured in magazine interviews on efficient training tech-niques and serves as a wellness trainer for Grand Hyatt Hotel Singapore and had also conducted cor-porate workshops for the Singapore Police Force. Vinz Low is in the picture holding my book. The 1st day of training we focused strik-ing. The fighting concepts are based from Great Grand Master Willem Reeders Martial Arts which Sifu Der-baum has studied over the years. Sifu Chris Derbaum has over 20 years experience in the Chinese-Indonesian Art of Kuntao and Silat. Sifu Chris Derbaum has over 20 years experience in the Chinese-Indonesian Art of Kuntao and Silat. He started his training under the instruction of Sifu Lenny Howie (Florida Kung Fu Feder-ation) from 1991-1997, Master Guy Savelli (World Kung Fu Federation-Kuntao) from 1997 to present and also studies Kune-Tao under the instruction of Master Scott Young and Grandmaster Bob Servidio (Meadville School of Kung Fu) since 2010.

Malay/Mamak Food and Tai Chi

After the seminar Reza, James and Bugis toast to Singapore Tiger Beer. The food was Malay and Ma-mak (Muslim Indian) food which was very good and tasty. In Singapore at most Public housing you find martial arts to the tenants. At this particular Housing Project they were practicing Yang Tai Chi Style. You see Martial Arts everywhere Singapore if you know where to look.

Day ThreeMeeting Charlie Lim

Honor of Meeting Charlie Lim the Famous Photographer and Master in numerous martial arts including Chinese and Japanese Styles. Nicknamed the Painter of Light. It is difficult to stick a label on Charlie Lim. Art director, commercial photographer, fine arts veteran – he has tasted them all, and still continues to test the boundaries of photography in a career that has spanned over three fruitful decades. His works encom-pass a broad range of subjects, from food and product advertising to industrial and aerial works; a range challenging even to the professional photographer. Yet Charlie weaves it all into a watertight presentation of his trademark artistry, where every work is stamped with his inimitable signature. Oil Painting Photography is Charlie’s magnum opus. Struck by the dramatic chiaroscuro of oil paintings, Charlie sought to transport its brilliance from canvas to print. Transport he did – in the process pioneering a whole new photographic revolution. Under the cloak of a darkened room, wielding a light torch as his paint-brush, Charlie paints his subject. Charlie Lim website: charlielim.com

KunTao Private Training

2nd Day of Private Training focused on application of the knife in Kuntao and how deadly the blade can be used. Kuntao knife is an extension of the hand and all about attacking. In Kuntao the main objective is to use the body to make the strikes more lethal along with proper footwork at the right time. You want to tear and slash threw your opponent brutally cause fatal results. The participants were exposed to how explosive and brutal the Kuntao is on ending a conformation fast.

Day FourVisiting Chinatown

After private training Group our Host James Lee and Piruz (a.k.a. Bugi-man) took us to Chinatown to eat authentic Cantonese dim sum in a heritage building dating back to colonial times. The two street views at top and bottom left show the architecture of this part of Singapore, which was part of the first urban canter and central business district, as well as the heart of the water delivery trade.

At top and center right, the interior of the restaurant can be seen. According to James, the marble-topped tables and rosewood furniture are a characteristic of old restaurants in the region, and have been carefully preserved for their heritage value. The meal itself consisted of Cantonese dim sum, native to the southeastern Chinese province of Canton/Guangzhou. Similar to tapas, it consists of numerous tiny sampler dishes in bam-boo steamers or porcelain plates, meant to be slowly savored over the course of a lazy afternoon, with copious cups of Pu-Er tea. Rounded off with a dish of beef hor-fun (wide, flat rice noodles, like lasagna), it proved to be deceptively filling. At bottom right is a scene from a sheltered area outside the Buddha’s Tooth Relic Tem-ple and Museum. Some older men from the neighborhood gathered for the evening at stone tables marked with chessboards to play such traditional games as Chinese chess and weiqi (Go).

KunTao Seminar Day 1

This 2 days seminar gave a glimpse of the fighting concepts based from Combat Arts of Kuntao which originated in China and Indonesia. The seminar will include some of the original Kuntao Forms, Footwork and Striking that are taught for self defense. The seminar will focus on intensity in the movements and teaches techniques against more than one attacker. Kuntao is not a sport but is more about self preservation. The art is also great for Law Enforcement and Military personnel that want to enhance their combat skills. Sifu Chris is in active duty law enforcement and uses his skills on a regular basis.

The open hand striking of the whip and fire palm where discussed in detail and demonstrated in detail as well as brutal take downs in this combat system of Kuntao.

Trying Chili Crab

Host Reza in friends took to eat their famous national dish. Chile Crab is a Singaporean seafood dish popular in Singapore and Malaysia Mud Crabs. Malaysia Mud Crabs is commonly used and is stir crab in a semi-thick, sweet and savory tomato sauce chili based sauce. Despite its name, chili crab is not a very spicy dish. It is listed at number 35 on World’s top 50 most delicious foods compiled by CNN Go in 2011.

Chili crab has been promoted by The Singapore Tourism Board as one of Singapore’s National Dishes, and can be found in seafood restaurants all over the island. It is traditionally eaten with bare hands as a means to savor the juicy crab meat with its sweet and spicy chili sauce. Restaurants often provide wet towels or a washing bowl with lime in order to cleanse your hands after the meal. The food was amazing and highly recommended if you ever visit Singapore. You will not be disappointed!

Day FiveKunTao Seminar Day 2

2nd Day of Seminar was based on the footwork which their was a booked authored by Chris Derbaum and Jus-tin Miller called Fighting Patterns of Kuntao and Silat.

The book based on a diagram which is sometimes referred to as Chinese hands and Indonesian feet. The footwork diagrams are a guide to numerous footwork patterns to put you in the right place at the right time for devas-tating leg strikes and takedowns which can also be used against multiple attackers. There are over 140 pages of footwork patterns alone in the book that serves as a “how to” guide so you can follow along and practice on your own. The book also includes the most basic footwork stances to more complicated takedowns in this devastating system. When the same diagram is turned upright all the explosive handwork and brutal knife work is also followed from this diagram. Book is available on Amazon.

Day SixVisiting Sri Mariamman Temple and the Marina Sands Hotel & Gardens

We visited Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore’s oldest Hindu Temple from what we where told. It is an agamic temple, built in the Dravidan style. The Temple is located at in the downtown Chinatown district; the temple serves the majority Hindu Singaporeans, Tamilians in Singapore. Due to its architectural and historical significance, the temple has been deemed a National Monument and is a major tourist attraction.

The Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, eight years after the East Indian Company established a trading settlement in Singapore. Pillai was a government clerk from Pendag who arrived in Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles on his second visit to the island in May 1819. Pillai went on to set up the island’s first construction company, and also entered the textile trade. He rapidly established himself in business

Page 11: Lineage of Willem Reeders KunTao First Time Ever in Asiamaharlika-enterprizes.net/Published_FMAmagazines/...Kuntao (spelled ‘kuntau’) was referenced specifically alongside Judo

and was identified as a leader of the Indian community. We visited a 2nd Temple in Chinatown. One of the best museums we visited is Buddha Tooth Relic Tem-ple and Museum. This temple gets its name from Buddhists as the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic.

The temple is based on the Tang Dynasty architectural style and built to house the tooth relic of the historical Buddha. The ground breaking ceremony was conducted on 13 March 2005. Costing $62 million and 2 years later, a soft launch was held to coincide with the 2007 Chinese cultural elements and is historically con-centrated ethnic Chinese population. It is also great to see the old culture still alive in Chinatown.

We visited Marina Sands Hotel and Gardens by the Bay; which is an amazing piece of architecture which pools on top deck. Reminds me of something you would see from the future. No trip to Singapore is complete without seeing the most expensive built resort in the world. It is billed as the world’s most expensive standalone casino property at $8 billion, including the land cost.

Hard to describe Gardens by the Bay because it is so amazing and something you have never seen be-fore. Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning 101 hectares of reclaimed land in central Singapore, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir. The park consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. The largest of the gardens is Bay South Garden at 54 hectares.

Day SevenSharing KunTao with Singapore’s Government Spear Special Unit Team

After my Seminar, I was invited by the Singapore Government SPEAR Special Unit to share my Com-bat Art of Kuntao with the Officers. Singapore Prisons Emergency Action Response (SPEAR) is a department within the Singapore Prison Services called SPEAR Force and is a highly trained elite force that is deployed for various high risk and special operations, such as prepared to quell any occurrence of riots or fights within the prisons.

SPEAR officers are specialized in multiple areas, which are essential to make prisons safe in an ever-changing security climate. It was honor to share my art to help with threats in this environment that are like my second home being a Correctional Officer myself in Florida for over 24 years. I am very familiar with the con-crete jungle and some have called my style Prison Kuntao because it has helped develop how I express my style of Kuntao.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I highly recommend Singapore to the traveler and the Martial Artist. The culture and sightseeing is second to none. Reza and Sue Anne went beyond what a host should and cannot thank them enough. Rez and his extended family of students are great people. Also want to sent a special thanks to James Lee, Piruz and Vinz Low for also taking care of me during the trip. To be honest, I made friends for life taking this Singapore trip. I’m looking forward to my return to Singapore, which will be next August for another Kun-tao Seminar with my great Host Reza Emmanuel.
