LEASED CHASSIS FLEET STABILIZES IN 1991The U.S. leased container chassis
fleet grew by only about 500 un its in1990, according to the Institute of In-ternational Container Lessors(IICL).
"IICL estimates that in January1991 the leasing company fleet ofU.S. chassis stood at 181,456," saidEdward Woolley, secretary of thecontainer and chassis leasing asso-ciation.
At the beginning of 1990, IICLestimated the leased fleet totaled181,002 units. These figu res includeunits owned by all chassis leasingcompanies. Steamship lines areestimated to own about 125,000units, meaning the total U.S. chassisfleet comprises more than 300,000units.IICL FLEET In January of this year, thechassis fleet for IICL members con-sisted of 129,853 units. IICL membersare Flexi-Van Leasing Inc., Genstar,Textainer, Transamerica Leasing,Trans Ocean, CLOU, IntermodalEquipment Associates, Sea Con-tainers and Triton.

Longshoremen’s Union, represen-ting steamship clerks and checkers,recently launched a comprehensiveeducational program for its mem-bers.
A board of education, with repre-sentatives of various segments of theindustry, was created to oversee theproject. (Saudi Aramco) project the Middle East recently were loaded aboardthe M/V SAUDI DIRYAH at the FentressBracewell Barbours Cut Container Terminal.Each station includes two turbines (41.5 tonseach), two compressor units (33 tons each)and other components. Total shipping weightof each station was approximately 900 tons.The vessel is operated by the NationalShipping Company of Saudi Arabia (NSCSA).Others involved in the movement includedAramco Services Company, a United Statessubsidiary of Saudi Aramco; Santini Expt~rtl’acking Corp., packers; Biehl & Co., NSCSAagent; and Cooper Energy, supplier of thepump station components.

PORT AUTHORITY HOSTS ANNUAL RECEPTIONFOR HOUSTON TRANSPORTATION COMMUNITYThe Port of Houston Authority held its annualreception to acknowledge support receivedthroughout the year from members of the Houstontransportation community. Civic and industryleaders were invited to visit with members of thePort Commission and PHA executives at thePetroleum Club. Approximately 400 were in atten-dance. Each year, the Port Authority hosts similarreceptions in other key U.S. cities, including SanFrancisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City and New York.Receptions are also held annually in Mexico Cityand Monterrey, Mexico.
