LETTER FROM THE PRODUCER

On behalf of the entire Production Team, welcome to the 15th annualproduction of the Rotary Club of Lincoln Lamplighter Tour! It is ourprivilege and pleasure to work with an extraordinary team of actors, writers, directors, crew and all the volunteers who committed their timeand efforts to make this show come to life each November!

The Lamplighter Tour is also a fundraiser. Since its inception in 2003, thephenomenal success of the annual Tour has enabled the Rotary Club ofLincoln to contribute $190,000 to two significant community projects. As the tour continues to flourish, the club’s financial support to othercommunity programs is inevitable. Specifically, the funds raised from theLamplighter Tour are dedicated to building community through specialprojects that foster civic pride and enable the advancement of culturaland economic development in the Town of Lincoln.

We have had tremendous support throughout the community, fromparticipants, sponsors and audience which we greatly appreciate.

Thank you all for making the Lamplighter Tour a legend in Lincoln.

Enjoy the Show!

FIRST PLAY FAMILY

The patriarch of the family, Eddie Burton, made his way to Canada on theship Sarmation from the slums of England. The year was 1882 and he wasage 10 or 11. His passage to Canada was paid by his benefactor “AnnieMacPherson.” Miss MacPherson began her work of rescuing children fromthe streets and slums of Britain in 1865. Over the years 14,000 childrenwere sent to Canada for what would hopefully be a better life. Canadianfarmers required cheap labour and many of these children found work onlocal farms. Eddie Burton was among their lot. Eddie was successful inCanada and eventually opened his own butcher shop on King Street inBeamsville. He also fathered 10 children with his wife Blanche. Tragedystruck the family when Eddie died at a young age and left behind his wifeand ten children. It was a difficult time for the Burton family, but thecommunity of Beamsville rallied around them. As adults the Burtonchildren were grateful for the many acts of kindness that the communitybestowed upon them. They continued to “pay it forward” with countlesshours of community service in various organizations. Their legacy of givingback to the community, still lives on today.

Unique architectural features of this building include the red pressed brickwork laid in what is known as an “English Garden Wall” pattern. Six oversix windows and louvered shutters complete the façade.

The Ivy Lodge of the Masonic Hall occupies the second floor of thisbuilding, over what was once the town hall of the Township of Clintonbears the date 1851. J.D. Osborne purchased the second floor from thetownship for the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds. In the agreementof 1856, the township agreed to maintain the roof, while Osborne agreedto prevent any damage to the building from disrepair of door or windowson the second storey. The premises were to be used by the Sons ofTemperance, an organization to which Mrs. Osborne was a patron. Mr.Osborne later transferred the deed of ownership to Ivy Lodge in 1871.

In 1880, following theincorporation of Beamsville asa village, the municipalityobtained a 99 year lease onthe Town Hall. Although themembers of Ivy Lodge weresomewhat concerned that themunicipality might not honourtheir use of the space, theentire matter was settledamicably and the membersstill occupy the space to thisday. FOURTH PLAY FAMILY

If it wasn’t for two families from the Town of Beamsville, the sport of hockeywould not be the same. Captain Vosburgh and Billy Fairbrother wereresponsible for the invention of the hockey net!

Captain Vosburgh was first given the title of “Captain” for his service withthe 19th Lincoln Battalion in 1866 while he was defending our bordersfrom the invasion of the Fenians. After his military career, he went on tobecome the local blacksmith in the village of Beamsville. His shop waslocated on Central Avenue, where Community Care now resides. His fellowinventor, Billy Fairbrother was the local postmaster and avid hockey player.

The Captain’s place was a gathering spot in the winter. Back in the 1880’she constructed the first covered skating rink just east of his shop whichwas located on Central Avenue. The rink had dressing rooms for the menand women, a place for spectators, music by local musicians, andsomeone to sprinkle the ice with a watering can, to keep it smooth. For 10cents you could skate all afternoon.

Together Captain Vosburgh and Billy Fairbrother with the help of AaronGrobb created the hockey net. The hockey net was controversial at first. The Montreal Gazette complained that nets undermined the skill of thegoalies, but other newspapers saidthey would revolutionize hockey. TheOntario Hockey Association adoptedFairbrother and Vosburgh’s creationas its official net in 1898. InMontreal, they adopted the ideaimmediately, and started massmanufacturing of nets. Fairbrotherand Vosburgh never patented theiridea, so they didn’t profit from thesale of the nets. Their nameshowever, live on in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

J.B. Osborne, a prominent citizen of Beamsville, and a staunchPresbyterian donated land for the church in 1869. Records show thatSenator William Gibson was a member of the Church and on the buildingCommittee. The building was dedicated as the Presbyterian Church in1889, according to the cornerstone which is located on the west side ofthe building facing William Street. The United Church of Canada wasfounded in 1925 as a merger of four Protestant denominations, TheMethodist Church of Canada, the Congressional Union of Ontario andQuebec and most of the congregations of the Presbyterian Church inCanada and the Association of Local Union Churches. The building knownas Trinity United Church was dedicated in 1938.

Unique features of the structure include the tin ceiling, original mouldingsand the stained-glass windows. Of note are the windows whichcommemorate J.B. Osborne, Senator Gibson’s wife and the members ofthe congregation that served in World War I.

HUGUENOTS

Huguenots were French Protestants who followed the Reformed tradition.

At the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes(1598) the charter of their religious and political freedom, and orderedthe destruction of Huguenot churches, as well as the closing of Protestantschools.

As a result of this officially sanctioned persecution a large number ofHuguenots — estimates range from 210,000 to 900,000 — left France, seeking asylum not only in England, Prussia, the Netherlands and otherEuropean countries but also in Quebec, probably because of the existingFrench speaking population there.

They became very useful citizens of their adopted countries. Many wereurban people in commerce and industry.

We came across thename Prud’homme onthis tomb which islocated in the St. Vincentcemetery in Montmartrein Paris, France.
