From the President

B y the time you read

this it will be October,

which means the LARC

Board has put together a

Nominating Committee

that will solicit a slate of

candidates for Board va-

cancies next year. The Nominating Committee

will be announced at the October 8 Club meet-

ing, and at the November 12 meeting the com-

mittee will present a list of candidates and take

additional nominations from the floor. Voting

will take place at the December 10 meeting.

LARC needs an infusion of new people on

the Board and committees every year to keep

the Club vibrant and responsive to member

interests. If you think that you would like to

serve on the Club Board, I urge you to contact

the Nominating Committee or a current Board

member and express your interest to serve.

Propagation. And now for something

completely different: I was operating on 20

meters last week and decided to try to make

some contacts on my QRP radio, which has a

maximum power output of 5 watts. I fired eve-

rything up and responded to a W1AW/5 station

calling CQ on RTTY. To my surprise he came

back to me and gave me a 599 report from

Texas. Since I was transmitting with only 5

watts, I thought that he was just giving every-

one the same 599 and finished the QSO. Next I

found a VE7 station calling CQ from British

Columbia on PSK31 and responded to him. He

came right back to me, again with a 599 signal

report. I gave him his report and told him that I

was operating at 5 watts. He responded that my

signal was the strongest on his PSK waterfall

screen. I was amazed. Similar to the phrase

"Location, Location, Location" in the real es-

tate arena, I am convinced that in Amateur Ra-

dio the key is "Propagation, Propagation, Prop-

agation."

Did you find the hidden tower in the LOG?

September Campout & Picnic

T he weekend turned out to be one of the

coldest on record (with frost warnings Friday) and on-and-off rain showers. All-in-all, those who toughed it out enjoyed the weekend.

Pancakes were on the menu for some on Satur-day morning and a hamburger/steak-fry Satur-day night cookout. Lonnie, WDØAOP, and

Cathy, KCØVET, Rech provided a big screen TV for the 9:00 PM Saturday Husker/Fresno

State late-night game. Cathy made delicious homemade ice cream—one with cherries and another with chocolate chips. Can you believe

that Cathy has had ice cream one and two times a day since she and Lonnie have been married, which is over 40 years. I don’t know whether to

laugh or cry. Kurt Draper, KCØKGY, made a number of contacts with 5 watts to a dipole strung in a

tree. Kurt has a nifty new small mobile radio that covers HF/2 meters/70 cm. Lonnie,

WDØAOP, also made contacts throughout the weekend. Mary, KDØONS, Kay, KDØPTT and Dale, KDØPTE, spent their first weekend as

newbie campers and are ready to camp a time or two before the snow flies. All in all, family and friends enjoyed good conversation, food

and a laugh or two over the weekend, and that’s something to be thankful for.

Last Blast Triathlon September 14

The water at Branched Oak Lake was 15

degrees warmer than the air when the swim-

ming leg of the Last Blast Triathlon began.

Nonetheless, over 200 contestants participated

in the swim-bike-run triathlon— a fund-

raiser for the YMCA. Our crew reported on

the progress of the competitors throughout the

event, which started at 8:00 AM and wrapped

up by Noon, followed by a nice lunch at Lip-

py’s BBQ in Malcolm. Helping out were:

R oad Rally crew members will meet at

1:30 PM at Antelope Park, A Street and

Capitol Parkway, and pick up a route list and

rules and regulations. Look for the LARC

banner.

Connie, NØGMA, and Chuck, KDØPTK, are certified Road Rally race officials and will

present the winners with first-, second- and third-place trophies. Gather your pit crew, choose

your driver (share the cost of gas) but remember, people living in the same household can not

ride in the same vehicle, (unlicensed pit crew members are exempt.) Rules for the Road Rally

will also be posted on www.facebook.com/LARCLincoln and the k0kkv.org web site.

Young and old can participate. A Road Rally is similar to a scavenger hunt, but instead of

picking things up, you look for clues around Lincoln on wheels. It will be a fun time. so make

plans now to attend.

Following the Road Rally, winners will be presented with their tro-

phies at a first-ever Road Rally Bratsfest at 5:00 PM. Bring your own fla-

vor of brats and buns and a bag of chips or cookies. Plates, napkins and

drink will be provided. Heat not guaranteed. This outrageous event will be

broadcast on 146.760.

ROAD RALLY RULES 1. Form a pit crew of 3 or 4 people for each car. Designate: (a) a driver (b) a cell

phone photographer and (c) a navigator.

2. No one living under the same roof can ride in the same car (unfair advantage).

3. Your pit crew can determine where you want to start and end.

4. The race will end at the Antelope Park location.

Additional rules will be given at the time of departure.

Transmitter Hunt Update

O ne result from the

September Program is

the creation of the First

Responders Transmitter

KØNE, KBØQH, KDØRTK and WBØYYE—

sign up at this time to be on call, pending availa-

bility, to be part of this group. Call signs and

names will be reviewed by the Board for the crea-

tion of policies and procedures. Meanwhile, should this group be needed, a Board member

will call me via cell phone and I will generate the text messages to those listed above and give them

a phone number to contact for Transmitter Hunt Net Control. The plan includes a test of this sys-

tem.

Since my appointment as Trans-

mitter Hunt Chairman, we have had

four days and seven hunt events.

September 27 was the final hunt for

September. All Fox Hunts begin at

7:00 PM and meet at various locations.

more experienced hunters an added challenge. We continue to need experienced T Hunt-ers as Elmers to train newbies. Experienced Hunters are asked to try to bring a newbie to

the Fox Hunt. Newbies who attend will be linked up with an Elmer.

QCWA Nebraska - NEØQP Chapter 25 - Lincoln, Nebraska

Chartered May 28, 1964

C hapter 25 is pleased to announce the

2014 Nebraska Rare County Activation

special event in early October. The

event is designed to encourage amateurs

in Nebraska and outside of Nebraska, to activate

those Nebraska counties that are currently (or have

traditionally been) difficult to contact. The event is

aimed at making the rarer counties of Nebraska

available to county hunters—for example, those

earning county hunter awards and/or those who

might be interested in earning a Worked All Ne-

braska Counties award.

The activity will take place entirely on Satur-

day, October 11. It will start at 8:00 AM CDT

(1300Z) and end at 5:00 PM CDT (2200Z). The

special event station, NEØQP, will be operating

from some of the counties during this period. A

preliminary list of rare counties that will be the

main focus includes these counties: Boyd, Knox,

Garfield, Johnson, Loup, Rock and Sioux. In addi-

tion, there will be an effort to activate Washington,

Burt, Cumming, Johnson, Pawnee, Boone, Holt,

Perkins, Chase, and Grant counties.

The general frequencies to be used in the spe-

cial event are located near the County Hunter’s Net

frequencies: CW: 7,056.5 14,056.5 21,056.5

kHz—SSB: 7,188 14,336 21,336 kHz It may be that not all rare counties will be acti-

vated, and some at different times than others,

since we will be using mobile stations. Therefore,

about two weeks prior to the activity we will post a

Schedule of Operations with more specific infor-

mation (call, county, time, band) about operations

that we are aware of. The posting will occur on the

QRZ.com Web site for NEØQP (NEØQP is the

club call sign for QCWA Chapter 25, which is

sponsoring this activity.)

Individual Amateurs or clubs that are interest-

ed in participating in this special event are encour-

aged to contact Reynolds Davis, KØGND, at

[email protected] so that we may post tenta-

tive schedules for their operations. Also, stations

that might need a specific county are encouraged to

contact KØGND at the same e-mail address and we

will endeavor to activate that county if it is not

already scheduled.

2014 LARC Awards It is that time of year again when we need to be thinking of the Club Awards that will be presented at

the Christmas party in December. Put on your thinking caps and start remembering back through the year.

Steve May, WAØASM, Award. The current Board will select the recipient. This award recognizes a

Club member who sees a need and steps forward to take it on without expecting recognition.

Jerry Kohn, WDØEGK, Award. This Award is based on public service participation in addition to

personal character and a desire to go above and beyond what is expected.

Robert Fricke, WØPOL, Award is a homebrew/kit build award. Only current members of the Lin-

coln Amateur Radio Club will be eligible for this award. Anyone wishing to enter a project must con-

tact Connie Zehr, NØGMA Awards Chairman, [email protected], or call 402/202-2805, to regis-

ter their project for evaluation at the November 12 Club meeting. This Award recognizes excellence

in construction, from antennas to circuit boards, and will be judged by a panel of three at the Novem-

ber 12 Club meeting. A $100 cash prize will be awarded at the December 7 Christmas Party.

Ed Woerner, WAØQJK, Award is presented to a Club member who has acted as a mentor, helped

other Ham operators to advance in the hobby and has gone above and beyond what would have been

expected. Nominations are sought from Amateur Radio operators in the area. Club membership is not

required. Please be ready to nominate your favorite Ham for this award.

Jerry Cox, WØMAO, Award is for excellence in all areas of Amateur Radio including operating

techniques, public service, experimenting technical achievement and helping others. This award is

also by nomination from the Amateur Radio Operators in the area, and Club membership is not re-

quired to qualify for this award. Bring your favorite nomination for this position to the November 12

meeting.

VE Exam Sessions September 4

W e had two candidates at

the VE Exam Session

with one new Amateur Extra and

one that upgraded.

• Thomas Smith, ADØKL, of Lincoln

passed Technician, General, and Amateur

Extra, so Thomas is a brand new Ham with

an Extra.

• Caryl Bohn, WX4KST, of Lincoln, up-

graded from Technician to General. Caryl

just received the Technician in August; the

next month, September, the General was

earned.

Congratulations to both!

The thirteen Volunteer Examiners

(VE’s) who participated in the session are:

NØADR, WØBMB, KØGND, KØKTZ,

ACØLN, NØLNK, W1LXE, NØPBJ,

KØQBZ, NØSCE, KØVNJ, KEØY, and

WEØY.

VE Exams in Lincoln are generally held

the first Thursday of each month, at Northside

Café, 2701 North 48th St., at 6:30 PM. Some-

times holidays interfere with the usual date so

the exam is held the second Thursday. The

next VE Exams in Lincoln will be October 2,

November 6, and December 4.

The exam fee is $15 and a picture ID (or

two IDs without pictures) is required. If you

are trying for an upgrade, please bring a copy

of your license that we can keep to send in

with the paperwork. If you just recently passed

the Technician exam and have not yet received

your license or seen the license posted on the

FCC Web site, please bring a copy of your

CSCE that we can send in with the paperwork.

On a new note, the FCC has made it possi-

ble for Hams to receive his/her old class li-

cense if it has expired over two years ago with-

out taking the General or Extra exam. You

must attend a VE Session, pay the current ex-

am fee ($15), and have at least a Technician

Class license to qualify for the General or Am-

ateur Extra upgrade that you used to have. If

you don’t have a current Technician, you must

pass the Technician exam at a VE Session and

be upgraded to your old license. You must pro-

vide the proof that you originally had the Gen-

eral, Advanced, or Extra and provide a copy of

the proof for the team to turn in with the Form

605. The license will be a “new” issue, so you

will receive a sequential call sign, not your

original call sign. Since the Advanced Class

license is no longer issued, a General Class

license will be issued.

If your license is within the two-year grace

period, you can simply renew your license

through the FCC. And, of course, the original

call sign will be maintained and the Advanced

Class license can be renewed.

Thank You to KØKPH and KØGND; on

an “as available” basis, KØKPH provides cata-

logs from Ham Radio Outlet and KØGND pro-

vides LOGs to new and old Hams at the ses-

sions.

—John Hauner, KØIH

LARC Membership is yearly, January through December. See the back page of this LOG for addi-

tional details. Membership is necessary if you wish to nominate someone to the

Board or to accept a Board nomination in November or to vote for a prospective Board member in December.
