‘Staying In’ – Is The New Going OutThis Week’s Feature Story
It’s great to stayin sometimesand get cozy onthe couch, sograb some pop-corn and curl upfor an evening ofgreat TV and
watch your favorite primetime shows that are return-ing back into our living rooms over the next month.
Tonight, the CW network sees the return of its No.1 hit show, Vampire Diaries and the love triangle thatexists between the three main characters. Other CWshows that mostly cater to a younger audience are90210, America’s Next Top Model, Nikita andSupernatural. Top series, Gossip Girl also returns tothe channel and follows our favorite Upper EastSiders’ around the world on their sizzling summerexploits XOXO!
From next Monday, the big networks bring backtheir star shows in full force including Fox’s award win-ning Glee, the highly anticipated musical comedy thatsince its debut has become a bona fide cultural phe-nomenon. Other favorites include CBS’s How I MetYour Mother, Hawaii Five-O, Survivor and Two and a
Half Men with new leading man Ashton Kutcher.Rumor has it that all of “Charlie’s” ex-girlfriends willfeature in the first episode on Monday night so it hadbetter be a large set!
Whilst I’m no TV addict, I would recommend lastyear’s newcomer, The Good Wife (CBS) and for lighterentertainment the return of the very watchable TheBig Bang Theory (CBS), Modern Family (ABC), TheAmazing Race (CBS) and The Office (NBC).
And, who can wait for the return of ABC’s hit hos-pital drama Grey’s Anatomy when we get to seewhether “McDreamy” can ever forgive Meredith? Theshow is nicely followed by LA spin-off Private Practice– which makes for a great Thursday night in.
Last but definitely not least is the return of Fox’sHouse; with his terrible bedside manners yet brilliantdiagnostic skills this off-the-wall specialist may havefinally behaved so badly that he is beyond forgive-ness, not even from his best friend.
Dexter fans will be delighted to hear that ourfavorite vigilante serial killer with a heart is back onHBO for a sixth season on Sunday nights at 9pm, how-ever, its timing does clash with NBC’s Sunday NightFootball. Guess this could be the time to get that sec-ond TV after all!

Dear Koren,
I am the parent of a 12 year old daughter who is
starting high school. We would have preferred to send
her to private school but since things have not been so
good financially with our business, we decided to send
her to a public school. I am very nervous about this as I
have heard the horror stories about some of the fights
and so on in these schools. What should I tell my
daughter to keep her in line so that she does not get in
with bad company or get into any trouble?
– Concerned Mom
Dear Concerned Mom,
One can put a pig in a palace and it will still be a
pig; likewise, one can put a swan in a mud pond and
it will still be a swan. What I am saying is that if you
have raised your daughter to be a respectful,
focused young lady, then continue to support her
and she will be fine regardless of the environment
she is placed in.
Public and private schools both have their chal-
lenges; maybe the challenges are of a different type,
Daughter Starting High School
but they exist all
over. What is more
important is that
you communicate
every day, listen to
her and encourage
her to be the best
she can be wher-
ever she is.
School should
be a place for edu-
cation and social-
ization and not a
battlefield. However, if it will make you feel safer, you
could discuss with her how to handle conflict, what
to do if someone picks a fight with her and how not
to succumb to peer pressure.
What you should not do, is give her the impres-
sion that she is better than anyone else or encour-
age the thinking that she is entering a warzone. Our
young people are flexible and adaptable, and high
school is a place for making great friends, learning
valuable lessons and creating wonderful memories.

It’s 1992 in Bogota, Colombia. Cataleya’s father
played by Jesse Borrego learns that Don Luis (Beto
Benites), a drug lord is putting a hit out on him and
his family for a valuable microchip that he holds and
that Marcos wants. Cataleya’s father gives her the
microchip with instructions to take it to the US
Ambassador, and tells her this is her “passport”
along with the address of her uncle Emilio (Cliff
Curtis) who lives in the United States. Nine-years-old
Cataleya played by Amandla Stenberg witnesses her
parents' murder by Marco (Jordi Mollà), the hench-
man of evil drug lord Don Luis. She sits there, terri-
fied, but not making a single sound and remember-
ing the last words her father said to her, "Never
Forget Where You Came From."
Cataleya somehow manages to escape using
her impressive parkour skills, with the microchip her
father gave her which contains some kind of secret
information and allows her to enter the United
States. Once in the US she dodges her handler and
makes her way to Chicago to meet up with her last
remaining relative, Uncle Emilio. She expresses her
desire to him to exact revenge on her parent’s killers,
so Emilio agrees to train her into a one woman killing
machine.
Fast-forward fifteen years, and Cataleya has
grown up to be just that – a lean, mean killing
machine, now played by Zoe Saldana. Shaped by a
trauma in her early life, she eschews pants and
breathable clothing, and welcomes violence and
weaponry into her life, hell bent on finding those
who killed her parents (Don Luis and Marco), and
making them pay with their lives. She kills her way
through the Colombian underworld and paints a
cataleya orchid on her victims, letting Don Luis know
that she’s coming, and catches the eye of FBI special
agent James Ross ( Lennie James).
In many respects, Colombiana is a typical
revenge movie, one that has been churned out in
recent years. But if you’re in the mood for a no brain-
er action thriller with a hot girl carrying a gun
Colombiana does the trick. Now showing at U.Ps
Cinema. See the schedule on page 12 for showtimes.

Foraging For Local Produce
I know that we live on islands here. I also know
that the soil is not naturally mineral rich for growing
and harvesting. It must be worked, treated, turned
over, weeded, sprayed and cared for. I also know I
have tasted some of the sweetest mangoes ever, right
here on Tortola. Also some pretty awesome papayas,
sugar apples, local lemons and pineapples. So it is a
bit frustrating when shopping at the local markets in
the territory, that so much of what I know can be
grown locally here – is imported from other countries.
Case in point: Last week’s grocery list (after a
careful examination of labels) included oranges from
CHILE, papayas from BELIZE, avocadoes from SANTO
DOMINGO, lemons and limes from FLORIDA and most
of the unmarked produce from the USA. It makes com-
mon sense that the sweeter the fruit or more tasty the
vegetable, the closer it is to the harvest point. We all
know the pure ecstatic joy of plucking ripe fruit from a
tree and savouring the taste. Obviously, if the fruit or
produce we ingest is harvested while still green, put in
large containers, brought over long distances, han-
dled countless times, the possibility that it might taste
remotely what it looks like is highly unlikely. Like a
tomato - looks like a tomato, feels like a tomato – but
the taste?
There are certain foods I choose not to eat here,
although they are shipped in. One of those is corn.
Call me spoiled, but it is worth the annual summer trip
to upstate New York when corn is in season to get the
taste of bursting–with–flavor local yellow and white
corn. I would also wait for tomatoes but then my sal-
ads would look a little bare and all those dishes that
call for tomatoes would be lacking a key ingredient.
Now with all this grumbling there is a bit of gratitude.
I do recall the days when produce choices were limit-
ed to root vegetables. The spread included potatoes,
yams, tania, dasheen, green bananas – and on a real-
ly good day you might get cauliflower of broccoli. This

Zooey Deschanel is the ‘New Girl’ Maybe New Girl couldhave been made with-out Zooey Deschanel, but it’s hard to imagine.Virtually no other cur-rent performer so per-fectly embodies thekooky, endearing qualityrequired by the Fox sit-
com that debuts Tuesday, Sept. 20.“I would like to think it was written for me, but I
don’t think it was,” says the (500) Days of Summeractress who’s helping to give Fox a family actingdynasty: Sister Emily is starting her seventh seasonon the mystery series Bones.
In New Girl, Deschanel is Jess, who becomes theroommate of three buddies (Jake Johnson, MaxGreenfield, Lamorne Morris) after she breaks up withher cheating boyfriend. It’s an uncertain arrangementat the start, but if there’s any doubt it can work overthe long haul — for the characters or for viewers —there’s the Deschanel factor to consider. Strongly.
“I mean, here’s the thing,” she explains in her dis-arming way. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a part thatwas as charming and exciting. She’s very much her-self, and she’s almost too in touch with her emotions.Reading the pilot script, I was literally laughing outloud, having such a good time. I think this opportuni-ty became appealing to me because the material’s sogreat. The thought of doing it for a long time is actual-ly really exciting to me.”
That’s a big statement for Deschanel, since hermovie career has been quite consistent. Currently fea-tured in Our Idiot Brother, she also has appeared in
Your Highness, Yes Man and Elf. However, she rea-sons, “They don’t make as many movies now as theyused to. If there’s any character I want to play foreverand ever, it’s this one, so I’m psyched.”
Such praise is music to the ears of New Girl cre-ator and executive producer Liz Meriwether, who alsowrote last winter’s Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutchermovie No Strings Attached. She says, “I remember thefirst time (Deschanel) came in, she read with the guysauditioning to play the guy parts. Just the second sheopened her mouth to do the scene, the feeling in theroom was, ‘This is a perfect match of character andactress.’ We really didn’t do a lot of finessing. It wasgreat.”
The way Deschanel sees it, “Liz and I, our soulsare connected. And when your souls are connected, you’re meant to do a show together.”
The inclination of Deschanel to sing was anadded plus: As the New Girl debut confirms, Jess canbreak into a tune (“Ethel Merman, a little jazz stan-dard, a little heavy metal,” the star notes) in ananosecond, even when doing a striptease for hersoon-to-be-ex.
“I feel Jess is not a singer because she thinksshe’s a great singer,” Deschanel says. “It’s just part ofhow she expresses herself. I feel like the singingmoments are really well peppered in, because youdon’t want to overdo it. That would be crazy. Whenthere’s an awkward moment, she sings, but we kind ofplay with it.”
That said, Deschanel says she also embraces thesteady schedule and familiar work New Girl is givingher. “I just like to know what to expect,” she con-cludes, “in very small ways.”
