Lighting Design Service
Lighting Design Service at The New Craftsmen
This September, The New Craftsmen is launching a new lighting design and integration service – enabling clients to realise bespoke lighting design solutions drawing on the incredible makers, materials and skills in our network.
As part of this service, specialist lighting designer Claire Norcross will work with New Craftsmen makers and lighting engineers Tyson to design bespoke feature lighting tailored towards the needs of interiors designers & architects.
From one-off statement lighting installations, to design suitable for batch production, we will work with you to identify the most appropriate maker and material for your needs, and then develop a light design that meets your creative and technical specification.
How it works
Initial Exploration
Inspired by the material, skill or makers’
previous work, clients can sit down
with Claire and The New Craftsmen
to discuss initial ideas and the lighting
needs for the space. Together we will
produce a creative vision for the piece
and define a direction for exploration.
Idea Development
Claire will liaise with the maker(s) that
best fit the brief and collaborate with
them throughout as she begins to design
the lighting pieces required.
Design proposals will be shared with the
client, reviewed and finalised.
Production & Delivery
With the design agreed, Claire
will specify what is required for
manufacturing and liaise with Tyson to
begin sampling the different elements of
the light, which will be shared with the
client for final sign-off. The light design
then goes into production with Claire
and the maker on hand to advise Tyson
when required right through to delivery.
Claire Norcross
Claire Norcross is best known for the range of designs
produced whilst she was head of lighting at Habitat.
Claire’s approach to lighting is to create sculptural
objects which are illuminated and this is evident in her
Ribbon, Aperture lights as well as the recent Crystalline
light which was launched as part of the Design Reunion
project for Habitat in 2014.
Claire’s design process is more closely related to that
of a designer-maker, yet her work has developed a
commercial edge and encompasses a wide range of
materials, from paper to metal and glass.
