INTRODUCTION Li –Fi is “ transmission of data through illumination of

light, i.e. sending data through a LED bulbs that vary in intensity faster than human eye can follow”.

Li-Fi is the the fast and cheap wireless-communication system.

WHY LI-FI WHEN WE HAVE WI-FI?

We need faster data rate.

Wireless data is growing exponentially leading to RF spectrum shortage.

HISTORY OF LI-FI

5

Professor Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh is the founder ofLi-Fi. in in TED global talk in 2011.

Professor Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh coined the term Li-Fi in TED global talk in 2011.

In April 2014, the Russian company Stins Coman announced the development of a Li-Fi wireless local network called “Beam Caster”.

The Li-Fi Consortium has proven that 10gbps data rate is possible by Li-Fi technology.

HOW LI-FI WORKS? If the LED is on, transmit a digital 1, if it's off then

transmit a digital 0.

Flickering rate is very high.

CHALLENGING PROBLEMS Connectivity

This problem is similar to the connectivity problem in cellular network when you move from one area of the city to another area while speaking with cell-phone.

The solution is called “handover”, using which the user is transferred from one BS to another . 10

CONTD.. Multiuser support

Solution is time division multiplexing (TDM). Each frame is divided into equal time slots. Each user transmit data in one time slot in a predefined order.

DISADVANTAGES OF LI-FI

Light can't pass through objects.

Line of sight is needed.

Li-Fi doesn’t work in the dark or outdoors.

Difficult to achieve Bi-directional Capability.

High installation cost of the VLC systems.

CONCLUSION

Li-fi is the optical version of Wi-Fi.

Every bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspot to transmit wireless data .

Cleaner, Greener, Safer and Brighter future.
