Toledo for Life Students Impacting UT Campus

The Pro-life group is just a year old, but they are making a real difference on the UT campus. Under the leadership of its president Meghan Oberle they are dispelling the misconceptions of what it means to be pro-life.

Being pro-life is much more than just

being anti-abortion. Being pro-life is providing emotional support and resources to a fellow student struggling with an unplanned pregnancy. It is working to raise awareness of National Adoption Month and Disability Awareness on campus. It is holding a fundraiser through Threads of Hope, Inc. to raise money for

women and children in the Philippines to help end child trafficking. Recently they held a “change drive” to raise funds for Heartbeat of Toledo, but the real amazing thing is they recruited several other campus groups who you would not expect to join in a pro-life

fundraiser.Yes, it is also actively engaged in the more

traditional aspects of the pro-life movement to expand awareness and foster a culture of life on campus. Meghan’s team conducted a survey to see where the student body stood on the question, ‘When does life begin?’ After surveying over 180 students, results showed that approximately 30% of responders believe that life begins at conception. They also held a “We don’t need Planned Parenthood” display on campus in concert with Students for Life of America.

Many of these pro-life students participated in the annual Foundation for Life Benefit Dinner, the March for Life in Washington, DC, attended prayer vigils at Toledo’s last abortion clinic and the GTRTL Legislative Briefing Breakfast. Their officers attended the “Bringing America Back to Life” conference in Cleveland, Ohio.

March for Life Defiance, OH

The 8th Annual Legislative Briefing Breakfast

PAGE 2

On January 22, 2016, Mother Teresa Respect for Life sponsored the annual March for Life in Defiance, Ohio which began at the Defiance County Courthouse. A police escort led the march to the Monument for the Unborn. We then went to St. John Catholic Church where we enjoyed hot

chocolate and listened to several speakers and musicians. SEAL Team member Mary-Catherine Scarlett, Maumee, read her awarding-winning pro-life essay and ended with an Irish jig. Ranae Heres, a children’s ministry pastor, shared the story of her changing views on abortion and a preborn child’s right to life, singing ”Baby’s Heartsong”. Jasmine Dees of Toledo is the founder of Anointed Angels and is a post-abortive Mom of two. Jasmine spoke of how there is opportunity for healing and hope in this area for women. The students of St Patrick’s School, Bryan, shared a presentation for life and Jim Zipfel sang songs, for life ending with “God Bless America”.

The overwhelming consensus of those in attendance was another hugely successful event. This year’s breakfast had a change in format. Mary-Catherine Scarlett shared a creative essay that she wrote especially for that morning’s breakfast.

Ms. Scarlett has been involved with the Foundation for Life SEAL Team Program since she was in junior high school. Now, as Junior in high school, she is part of the SEAL Team 2 and in January she represented FFL at the annual Defiance March for Life event with an outstanding oratory presentation entitled “What If”. Over the years Mary-Catherine has won numerous Foundation for Life annual contests, from creative writing to video.

Congressman Bob Latta then gave some opening remarks and a briefing on national pro-life legislation. State Senator Randy Gardner made a few encouraging remarks and updated us on the status of a few pro-life bills pending in Columbus.

This was the first year we featured a keynote speaker who was not an elected official. Dan Becker, founder and chief lobbyist of the National Personhood Alliance, presented a very hopeful and compelling message to the 184 in attendance. He challenged young and old alike, stating that we need to raise the bar of commitment if we hope to see abortion end in our lifetime.

The first step in raising the bar means advocating for

legislation and legislators who are 100% pro-life. Period! Georgia Right to Life, Michigan RTL and several other states have proven that this is a winning strategy. These states no longer endorse marginal pro-life candidates. As a result, they are electing pro-life majorities in their states that are 100% pro-life. This doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, in the short run there are some setbacks. Now when they do have pro-life majorities they enact laws that

advance the cause of life and protect the pre-born person regardless of the circumstances surrounding their conception or the perceived quality of life.

Becker shared “We are called to be pro-life standard bearers, not political king makers”. “Pro-life groups that endorse candidates mainly based on their electability rather than their commitment to life are short-sighted at best.” Becker went on to say that, “in the long run they are unintentionally undermining the pro-life cause and betraying the trust of those they claim to represent.”

Mr. Becker concluded, “We

want to be agents of influence, and while it’s true, things take time and we don’t win every battle, we must be morally consistent and intellectually honest or those we hope to influence will never be convinced of our resolve.”

Executive Director Ed Sitter, commented afterwards, “We in the pro-life community must realize that we must push the agenda if real progress is to be achieved in advancing legal protection for all innocent

human life, born and unborn. Most elected representatives who support the right to life want to do the right thing. They are looking to us to keep them up-to-speed and partner with them on advancing a pro-life agenda.”

Also participating in this year’s breakfast were Pastor Jason Vickery, of Dayspring Church in Bowling Green, who opened the event in prayer, and Regina Proshek, one of our SEAL Team Captains, who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Father David Nuss, of Little Flower Catholic Parish, closed the program with prayer.

11th Annual March for Life hosted by St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Maumee

PAGE 3

For the past eleven years the St. Joseph’s Knights of Columbus Council 11370 has organized the greater Toledo area’s only annual observance of the 1973 US Supreme Court decision legalizing the killing of preborn persons.

Each year the event begins with a devotional service that includes a time of prayer for the families, workers who are involved with the practice of abortion and an end to America’s holocaust of the innocent.

Following this year’s devotional service the Knights led the 250 plus pro-life supporters to the parish cemetery where they laid flowers at the Monument of the Unborn and made some brief

remarks and then closed in prayer.Afterwards, participants were

encouraged to return to the fellowship hall for soup and hot beverages. At the hall Knight Bob Boyer shared some inspiring remarks, followed by State Senator Randy Gardner, Pat Todak

of Heartbeat of Toledo and Ed Sitter of Foundation for Life.

The event was concluded by a middle-aged woman who shared a powerful testimony of her journey of redemption, healing and restoration following her abortion decision made decades earlier.

Attention Pastors! Will You Stand and Pray for the Unborn?

National Life Chain 2016 is the first Sunday in October (10/2/16), and churches nationwide will gather to take

a public stand to pray to end abortion. Locally participants gather from 1:30 – 2:00pm to pray for repentance, healing, and an end to abortion in America.

From 2:00 – 3:00pm they stand quietly and peacefully holding a sign with a life-affirming message. This hour is designed to public witness that the Church will be silent no more and is giving voice to the Voiceless.

Proverbs 24:10-12 (NASB)10 If you are slack in the day of distress, your

strength is limited.11 Deliver those who are being taken away to

death, and those who are staggering to slaughter, oh hold them back.

12 If you say, “See, we did not know this,” does He not consider it who weighs the hearts? And does

He not know it who keeps your soul? And will He not [a]render to man according to his work?

Life Chain is an inter-denominational event that provides a very simple yet effective way to either introduce your congregation to the pro-life cause or to expand your current involvement.

You choose the best way to involve your congregation:

1. Partner with one of the existing Life Chains – Christ the King Catholic church in Toledo, Saint Joseph parish in Maumee or Dayspring Church in Bowling Green.

2. Host your own Life Chain. The Foundation for Life will provide signs, promotional materials and other resources. We will assist at every step to ensure your first Life Chain is a real success.

3. Finally, share a pro-life sermon on a Sunday, prior to October 2 to encourage your congregation to participate in one of the area’s Life Chains.

Taking part in a Life Chain is a great way to foster a culture of life within your church family and being a “Voice for the Voiceless”.
