2. Children on the Autism Spectrum grow into Adults on the Autism Spectrum. By the time a child turns 21, most services end and the adult is left to navigate the world on his or her own. Colleges are not required to provide services for students with Autism. Parents are aging at this point and will not be able to intensely care for their child throughout his or her entire adulthood. 3. Pervasive Developmental Disorder is part of the Autism Spectrum and affects 1-100 children. This is the statistic you hear in the media when 1 out of 100 people are affected by Autism. A diagnosis of Autism is usually between 1-800 to 1000 children. Most people on the Autism Spectrum can lead fulfilling and independent lives, with proper training and assistance where necessary. 4. A Life Coach is an excellent way to transition a person on the spectrum into adulthood as well as become a guide throughout each phase of adult development. Development does not stop when a child turns 21, development is a life long process. 5. Assistance to Change Obtaining assistance to make the desired change. Change The actual moment where the change occurs and becomes permanent. This chart is an illustration of the stages of change that must occur in order for the Adult on the Autism Spectrum to make a change. This method was developed by Jaclyn Hunt, MA and is the main subject of her future book. 8. Partner on the Autism Spectrum Autistic adults often need guidance in continuing to progress and grow in a way that instead of being resistant to change, he/she becomes resistant to staying the same. This includes bridging the communication gap in order for both partner's to feel understood and supported in the relationship. Typical Partner Spouses of autistic adults often need guidance and support in dealing with the emotional challenges and lack of adequate emotional reciprocity by their partners. This partner must also learn to literally and accurately communicate wants, needs, and desires to the autistic spouse. 9. Parents of autistic children often need reassurance that they are on the right track with raising their child and guidance when dealing with their childrens problem behaviors. Changing the way a parent communicates with his or her child is crucial in that child's development, as well as the parent's. Parents of autistic children must learn to remain healthy by establishing and maintaining their own identity separate from their children. 10.
