Discovery is the ofcial theme o this years Lie4Umagazine, but collaboration is the word that bestdescribes the process o producing this fne publication.
Student Vickie Roys design was chosen rom severalexcellent options presented rom instructor CarolinePledgers Design Communication II class.
Vickie then joined the student production teamthat has done a wonderul job o implementing the design.
The students listed in the sta box shot photos, researched and wrote copy, paintedillustrations, and designed content with proessional skill and dedication, but evenmore impressive is the way they managed to come together, communicate, andcollaborate while juggling jobs, classes, and other commitments.
Equally as impressive was the work o instructor Priscilla Wicker and the studentso her Digital Design II class. These students designed the campus spreads as parto their summer session class. They proessionally dealt with challenging timelines, workfow issues, and eedback to produce these ne pages.
This years Lie4U magazine is all about discovery, and in the process o producingthis true student publication, the entire team has discovered the power ocollaboration.
I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with this dynamic team.

Among the tall trees and receding concrete just south o the Drag rests a coliseum o golden bricks
and arches that makes up the Rio Grande Campus.
Dont mind the original Austin High School, John T. Allen, that is etched in stone above the main school entrances.
What goes on inside says Welcome to Authentic Austin.
The halls are alive with art, drama, news, and students motivated to make a dierence. The centrally located campus
is home to a variety o lively student organizations.
The massive three story building is situated on a basement ull o the schools necessary supplies as well as a student
art gallery area. Student art can also be ound in the open courtyard in the middle o the building.
In addition to two theaters and the library, classes can be ound on the other foors.
Books, coee, and all the other necessities or being a student can be ound within a block o campus. Austin Java,
Austins Pizza, and Thundercloud Subs are popular choices.
The used bookstore, Bevos, is just a block away, and its
a great place to
nd hard to gettextbooks.
Parking, a chal-
lenge at this
vibrant downtown
campus, will greatly
improve soon due
to the construction
to begin this all o

The entire Riverside Campus can be seen rom
the second oor balcony
o Building A. The
campus is an oasis in
the urban sprawl that
surrounds it.
To the north is the Roy G.
Guerrero Metropolitan
Park with its baseball elds
and trails, and to the south
is the Ruiz Branch o the
Austin City Library.
The Riverside Gol Course
denes one boundary o the
campus edging up to an enor-
mous parking lot. The other
side is residential. Beyond these
borders, restless Austin churns
away, but on campus, students
can nd peace o mind.
The campus is technically inclined
with an assortment o hands-on
classes. The size o the technical
operation on campus is something
to be witnessed. With courses rang-
ing rom metal working to automo-
tive tech to electronics, the school
has made an impression on the
local economy.

Prometheus stands rozen in time, caught in mid-
stride as a statue by Austin legend Charles Umlau
against the backdrop o the Northridge Campus.
The man o Greek myth splits the our buildings on
campus and a lush orested area encompasses the
grounds.
Eleven miles o park trails wind through the nearby Walnut
Creek Park. The neighboring apartments, duplexes, and
neighborhoods to the north contribute as much to the local
aesthetics as the cultural air o restaurants and businesses
to the south.Hungry students can enjoy Yucatecan, Mongolian, Thai, or
Indian, as the choices are numerous in this rich and diverse
neighborhood.
Each building mainly houses certain subjects: Building
2000 houses the main ofce, library, and
caeteria. The 1000 building revolves around
sciences and mathematic studies, and the
4000 building is directed toward liberal
arts, visual arts, arts and the tutoring
lab. 3000 is dedicated to some student
services and technical classrooms.
Students are encouraged to fnd their
true selves within these walls, and
many do. As some set their
sights on a major, they will
fnd themselves becoming
increasingly in tune with
North Austin.

The newest campus is located in the heart o
South Austin. Although the school has been
open or less than three years, the surrounding
community dates back nearly a hundred.
The school itsel has the best parking, hands down. The
campus rests evenly between the three story parking
garage and Crockett High School.
High school students hail South Austin Campus as the
early college start connection in the area.
As an example o how the center works with the
community, ACC and Crockett High School collectively
launched the new automotive center in January 2008.
Since this school opened its doors, students rom every
other campus have started attending classes here. The
array o nearby businesses oers diverse and interestingoptions or just o campus eats and entertainment.

Settling into the new semester, you are likely
to start noticing all the ACC event fiers in
places like the elevators at Pinnacle and the
hallways at Rio Grande. They are everywhere.
Thats because the Campus Activity Funding
Board helps und dierent club events.
This program is both run and unded by students. It provides unding or
clubs and helps maintain the rich and active Student Lie here at ACC.
CAB is part o the Campus Activities program that hosts Project:
Build a Park, one o the largest student lie community service events.
Students clean, landscape, and plant trees on a portion o the
greenbelt. This event is expected to have over 400 students this year,
and will include live music and ood or participants.
Student Lie also hosts the Welcomepalooza and Springtini events,
thrown to welcome students back ater break.
Campus Activity Funding Board
I think there are more opportunities or thestudents on the board, an end o the semesterstipend o $250 (paid to the students who
serve on the board), a leadership conerencein Florida, and a better chance to developstudent leadership skills.

connection to all the cultural,
academic, vocational, and
social clubs oered at ACC.
In these groups you can
discover your passion.
Students orm new groups each semester. In order to orm a
group you must have three students (ocers) and one ACC
aculty or sta member.
For example, last year, Students or Environmental Outreach,
the winner o the Oce o Student Lie Outstanding Club o
the Year and Program o the Year, in collaboration with Whole
Foods and the Whole Planet Foundation held an event called
24 Hours to Empower. Twenty sponsored riders rode in six
4-hour shits to raise awareness and money or amilies inpoverty-stricken, developing countries. They raised $5,000.
Another group registered almost 500 new voters. Yet another

Discover your voice. At ACC

comes to issues that aect your

is the key link between students
and the administration.
This group encompasses the the Student Government Association (SGA),the Shared Governance Committees, and Student Activity Fee Advisory

The committees make up the administrative side o the governance program; a
representative attends the SGA meetings and discusses committee issues. The
SGA is made up o a student-elected council, as well as two senators at each
campus. These organizations encourage student input into ACC operations,
while helping them develop their leadership and decision-making skills.
To run or oce or learn more about getting involved, contact the SGA oce

You wake up, go to your morning classes, and then youre o to work. By the time you

a waste o time and dishes to prepare a meal. Soyou dive into the drawer ull o take out menusand put some greasy Chinese on a ast track to

Two o the demographics most aected by poor nutri-
tion and unhealthy weight gain are young people and
people with lower incomes. College students are oten
both. However, poor nutrition has been linked to atigue,
weight gain, irritability, weakened immune systems,
and trouble concentrating. All o these conditions can
severely hinder ones ability to per orm well in school.
It can be the hardest or students just coming out o
high school. The newound reedoms can take a toll
on their schedules and waistlines. Think reshmen 15.
Substituting a balanced breakast with a sugar lled

you might be taking in. Not to mention, its a great
way to blow o some pre-exam steam. Also, moderate
exercise has been shown to improve ocus, stamina, andoverall health.
Wrie i wn One way to ensure that you areeating healthy, and even help lose some extra weight i
you already have it, is to write down what you eat. This
is a little more diligent than the average student needs
to be. But or some students, the ones who really need
to overhaul their whole diet, ood journals have been
proven to be very successul.

Finance yourdreamsAustin Community College oers an amazing opportunity to take quality classeswithout the big university price. That being said, its not ree. There are severaloptions when it comes to paying or school. You can take out loans, hunt down
scholarships, work, or, i youre lucky, convince a kind relative to support you. As with allthings, there are pros and cons to each option.
Working to nance your education is the only way to pay or school without accruing any personal debt. This is helpul i you want to transer to a our-year school because you only have to borrow or the last
years o your college education instead o the whole thing.
Also, paying or college with money you earned is incredibly motivating or some students. Its easier to
slack o on somebody elses dime. You should be motivated to go to class and do well because its a
waste o your money i you dont. This is refected in your grades.
However, work can eat up a lot o time that might be better spent s tudying or attending more classes,
so you might have to spread your classes over more semesters than i you didnt have to devote any
time to a job.
Loans oer the possibility to go to school ull time without having to work. However, loans canbecome a very costly monthly expense, and I you dont get a good job right out o college, there can
be real trouble.
There are two types o loans: ederal and private. Federal Staord loans are almost always based on
need, there are also ederal loans or the parents o students.
Private loans are loans directly rom a nancial institution to the student. Each institution is dierent and
inormation about their loans is usually available on their website.
Parents, grandparents or some other generous person might oer to help pay or your schooling, which can be great. You get ree time to ocus on your studies, and the ability to leave college debt ree.
However, i your parents pay or college, you might owe them too. I you ail or drop a
class, they have every right to complain. They paid or it.
The person supporting you might stipulate that you study certain things,
maintain a certain GPA, live at home, have a curew, or anything
else they like. College is oten a time o sel-growth, and it can
be hard to independently assert yoursel when you are
nancially dependent on someone else.
There is no one right way to pay or school; it
depends on the individual student. For most
students, it is some combination o parental sup-
port, nancial aid, personal income, and loans
that works best. The more you learn about
your options, the easier it will be to come up
with a plan that works or you and your amily.

Know before you borrow1. Student loans come as either ederal or private loans, to
apply or a ederal loan you frst have to fll out a FAFSA
(Free Application or Federal Student Financial Aid).
2. Some loans require a certain amount o hours be taken,
so i you drop to part time student status, they might ask
you to pay them back immediately.
3. Having a co-signer with good credit, usually a parent
can help you get approved, and help you get a lower
interest rate.4. There is a lot o inormation available on loans, read
everything beore you commit.
5. Borrow only what you need. When you graduate, it can
be hard to fnd a job that covers both the cost o living
and your monthly loan payments.
6. Apply or scholarships, hit up your parents, work parttime, anything you can do to avoid paying or school
entirely with a loan.
7. Contact ACC about tuition installment payments and
fnancial aid.
8. Textbooks can be purchased used in most cases. Look
online, or shop early or the best selection. Dont orget
to sell back your books or cash.
9. Dont borrow anything you dont think you will be able
to pay back. Upon graduation look into consolidating
your loans.

Instructors say you should devote up to three hours aweek to studying or every hour in class. Thats nine
hours a week per each standard three hour course.Thats not a small amount o homework.
Some students can study anywhere. Noisy patrons dont break their
ocus, and the sounds o roommates puttering around the apartment
dont inuriate them.
Most, however, cant overcome these distractions. Through trial and
error, students learn where and when they study best, and while it is
dierent or everyone, there are some beginner mistakes that should
be avoided.
For example, most people cannot successully study at any o the
ollowing: bars, nightclubs, hair salons, house parties, movie theaters,
concerts, in trac, at the mall, or while swimming. Dont try.
It sounds obvious now, but the student mind can oten rationalize
almost anything when homework starts to inringe on social lie.
Couple that with the growing trend o great study spots turning into
overcrowded nightclubs, and gett ing homework done can become
an issue.
For example, you stu your bag with notes rom class and haul every-
thing to your coee shop o choice only to nd either a live band play-
ing or a DJ blasting deaening remixes o every song you ever heard in
high school.
Ater abandoning hope that there is any way to accomplish something
at the coee shop turned hot spot, you head home.
Ever hopeul that i you stay up really late you can still nish your paper
that night, you get to work. Unortunately, your roommates and every-
one they have ever met are at your apartment making it impos-
sible to concentrate.
Luckily or ACC students,
every campus is well

SLEEP Studies have shown that students who sleep
less than the average seven hours had lower grades than
students who got eight hours or more. You will be less
likely to eel tired later in the day, and a lot less temptedto hit the snooze button through your early classes.
Go to CLASS Seems like a no brainier. Its not.
You might not have read what the lecture is going to
cover, or you just eel like you dont need to be there.
Go. You paid or it. I it was not going to be important,
the instructor would cancel. Go to class.
REAd tHE SYLLABuS Know the tardy policies,
late work policies, and extra credit policies or each
o your classes rom the beginning. Also make a note
about any assignments or test deadlines. For the most
part, any pieces o paper your instructors give you are
worth reading and keeping.
doNt GEt SICK Deciency in certain nutrients
can destroy your grades. Depending on whats out o
balance, you might notice irritability, lack o concentra-
tion, poor memory, or atigue. Specically vitamin C is
important to college students. You share classrooms,
desks, papers, keyboards, rest rooms, and door handles
with every person attending or teaching classes at your
campus. A vitamin C supplement, or even the addition
o an orange with breakast might keep you rom getting
sick and alling behind in class.
LoVE YouR PLANNER Student Lie providesthem or ree. Get a planner, and more importantly, use
the planner. Its the best way to see your due dates in
relation to other assignments, your work schedule and
prior commitments. I planners arent your style, try a
wall calender, or at least 4000 little Post-It notes that
you stick around your computer. Somehow, you must
keep track o what you need to do.
ExERCISE O course it s good or your body, but
it also helps combat depression and anxiety. In turn, it
is easier to ocus on school. Just 30 minutes a day can
help alleviate stress and improve health.
BALANCE College is supposed to be an academic
and social experience. The trick is to have both without
them interering with each other. Students that take 20
class hours and never see their riends and amily can
burn out, and students who blow o class to hang out
with riends get hopelessly behind.
Learning labs Collectively oer nearly 400 hours perweek o tutoring and computer access. At peak times such

student housingThe LeaseA lease is a legally binding contract between the resident(s)and the property owner(s), which spells out the conditionsunder which housing is rented. I any party to the lease doesnot ulll the lease obligations, the other party may takelegal action. It is very important that you ully understandyour rights and responsibilities, and the rights and respon-sibilities o the landlord as outlined in the lease agreement. The next ew pages will give you more inormation about
signing a lease.
Two Types o LeasesJoint and Several Lease (or Texas Apartment AssociationLease) is the most common lease agreement used in Austin. Itstates that the landlord holds each signer responsible or therent. In other words, i a roommate leaves while the lease isin eect, the remaining roommate(s) is(are) still responsible orthe entire payment o each months rent until the lease agree-ment is over.
Individual Lease is when the landlord enters into a separateagreement with each renter. I a roommate leaves beore thelease is over, the remaining roommates are not responsibleor paying that roommates part o the rent. The landlord can
accept your suggestion o who to sign as a roommate, or thelandlord can nd someone him/hersel to live in the apart-ment and pay the rent.
Written LeasesOral leases are legally binding in Texas. However, the prob-lem is that while you may not be promising anything, neitheris the landlord. A written lease specically outlines the termso a rental agreement. One o the advantages o a writtenlease is your rent cannot be raised unless there is an escala-tion clause. Also, you cannot be evicted during the time o thelease unless you violate the terms o the lease.
Application or RentalAn application or rental and an application deposit may be
required beore you sign the lease. Putting a deposit downindicates that you are intending to live there during the agreedtime. It may be dicult to get your deposit back i you changeyour mind. Do not sign the application or rental unless youintend to live there. Make a copy o the rental application andget a receipt or the deposit paid.

RULES!
GuarantorsSome apartment complexes will accept a guarantor, or co-signer, i you cannot meet their nancial qualications. Theguarantor must be a U.S. citizen, and be equally responsibleand liable or the terms o the lease.
Security DepositThe security deposit is intended to oset any damages orunpaid rent. Your responsibilities and requirements or the
return o the deposit should be outlined in your lease. Be sureto keep a copy o your security deposit check.
The Inventory ListMost leases include an inventory list. This is a orm or you toll out and tells the landlord the condition o the unit when youmove in. Fill it out in detail, and have the landlord, as well asyoursel, sign the orm i there are any repairs that need to bemade. Make a copy or your records.
Pre-lease InspectionThe signs o aging apartments are not always obvious, sothoroughly inspect the places you are considering. Apartmenthunting can be tiresome, and the last apartments you viewmay not receive the attention they deserve.

Multiple Residents or Occupants Requests or noticesgiven to/rom any resident constitutes notice to/rom all resi-
