The School of Gratitude

Most of us must learn gratitude. Often times it is modeled for us by our parents, teachers, or others who wear the mantel of wisdom that comes with age. Among the many lessons to be learned in the “School of Gratitude” is the lesson of loss.

I was reading recently an essay entitled “The Learning Curve of Gratitude,” where the writer describes the losses she suffered because of a life-threatening illness that interrupted her “routine”. The loss of her routine, the plans and regular hum of her life, gave her a newfound appreciation for the ordinary, and a deeper sense of gratitude for people, pets, even problems. To her surprise, she even came to be grateful for the illness that still threatened her life, which some might find difficult to understand.

This Summer issue of Life Together! is set apart for celebrating and showing gratitude to our partners who gave financial gifts in calendar year 2009. Starting on page 4 you will find a listing of partners who make up the Matthew Circle of Giving, a name inspired by the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:35-40, especially the words, “… just as you did it to one of the least of these, who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

Sacred Surprises

There is an element of surprise at work in these words of Jesus, a surprise not unlike the surprise we may experience in the School of Gratitude. It is a Sacred Surprise when those who suffer loss find themselves growing in gratitude for the experience, and it is a Sacred Surprise that comes to those who reach out to serve the poor and vulnerable, and in doing so, experience a Christ-encounter.

Given the climate of “loss” that so many are enduring in these unpredictable times, I am especially grateful for the personal decisions you’ve made to support the work of the Council of Churches. It comes as no surprise to me that people like you who partner with us to improve the quality of life for some of the most vulnerable people in our community are aware of how your own quality of life is improved through giving.

On behalf of our volunteer board of directors, our service agencies and staff, and the 100,000-plus people we serve each year, THANK YOU! Thank you for your partnership expressed through your generous giving.

May God’s abundance in Christ supply you with grace for your journey!

PROGRAMMake a difference in a young reader’s life by spending 30 minutes, once a week reading with an elementary student. Volunteers meet during the school day at the school from October until May. Training is required for new Reading Buddies and will be offered September 21 and September 22 at CCO. All

FUNDING NEEDED FoR CRoSSlINES BACk to

SCHOOL PROGRAMYou can help Crosslines prepare area children materially and mentally for the new school year by supporting our Back To School Program. Crosslines School Supply program purchases items in bulk at a reduced cost. Supplies are

then packaged and will be delivered on to elementary, middle and high schools in Springfield, Willard, Strafford, Republic, Ash Grove, Bois D’Arc and Fair Grove. Teachers are then able to discreetly give these items to children whose parents are unable to provide the tools they need to take full advantage of their education. Again this year, Crosslines will be providing supplies to 54 schools!
