Life Sketch of Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith
Dhaka, 18 January: Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, a renowned economist, diplomat, freedom fighter and language veteran, was born in a respected Muslim family of Sylhet in 1934. Mr. Muhith is the second son of Advocate Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz, MABL who was a great leader of Pakistan movement and one of the founder of Sylhet District Muslim League. His mother Syed Shahar Banu Chowdhury was also active in politics and social service. Mr. Muhith was very brilliant throughout his student life. He secured first place in Intermediate examination in 1951 from Sylhet MC College. He stood first class first in B.A (Hons.) in English literature in 1954 from Dhaka University and passed his M.A with credit from the same university in 1955. During his service period, he studied at Oxford University in 1957-58 and received MPA Degree from Harvard University in 1964.
After joining Pakistan Civil Service (CSP) in 1956, he served in different departments of East Pakistan, Central Pakistan and then Bangladesh. He was appointed Secretary of Planning Division in 1972 and Secretary of the External Resource Division of Finance and Planning Ministry in 1977.
During his service as the Chief and Deputy Secretary of Pakistan Planning
Commission, he made a report on the discrimination between East and West Pakistan and that was the first report submitted to the National Assembly in 1966. He was the first diplomat of Washington Embassy who transferred his allegiance to Bangladesh during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Mr. Muhith has earned outstanding reputation in economic diplomacy. He
has been a recognized figure in World Bank, IMF, IDB and in different organizations of United Nations.
He went for self retirement in 1981 from his service and then started his
second innings of glorious career as a specialist in economics and development in the International arena. He became Finance and Planning Minister of Bangladesh in 1982-1983. Next he worked as a Consultant in different institutions of WB and the UN. He was a Visiting Fellow of W. Wilson School in Princeton University in 1984 and 1985.
Mr. Muhith is equally skilled as a writer. He has published 21 books on
different subjects including administration, history, liberation war, governance and environment.
He is a pioneer of Bangladesh Environment Movement and was also the
founder President of POROSH and later BAPA. Mr. Muhith is married. His wife Syed Sabia Muhith is a designer. They are
parents of two sons and a daughter. Their daughter Samina Muhith is a Banker and specialist in monetary policy sector. Their elder son Shahed Muhith is an architect and younger Son Samir Muhith is a school teacher.

LIFE SKETCH OF AGRICULTURE MINISTER MATIA CHOWDHURY

Matia Chowdhury, popularly known as ‘Agni-kannaya’ (the daughter of fire) was born on June 30, 1942 at Nazirpur of Pirozpur District. Her father late Mohiuddin Ahmed Chowdhury was a police officer. Her husband late Bazlur Rahman was a renowned Journalist and the editor of the popular Bengali Daily ‘The Sangbad’.
Matia Chowdhury started her political career from her student life. She actively participated in the movement against the Ayub regime and the movement against the Education Commission of 1962. She was elected the Vice-President of Dhaka Eden Girls College Students’ Union in 1963 and the General Secretary of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) in 1964-65.
During her days in Dhaka University Matia Chowdhury became the unparallel student leader. She was then awarded the title ‘Agni-kannaya’ for her extraordinary leadership. She was the president of the then East Pakistan Students’ Union in 1965-66. Between 1967 and `69 time and again she was organizing anti Ayub movement and was detained in jail for about 2 years. She was released from jail during the mass upsurge of 1969.
Responding to the leadership and clarion call of Bangabandhu Sheikh Muzibur Rahman, Matia Chowdhury actively participated in the Bangladesh’s independence struggle in 1971. During the nine-month long war she engaged herself in armed training, campaigning, lobbying and nursing the wounded. She worked ceaselessly as one of the courageous and inspiring organizers to lead the freedom fighters towards independence.
After the emergence of Bangladesh Matia Chowdhury engaged herself in nation building activities under National Awami Party and became its organizing secretary. She joined the Awami League in 1979.
Matia Chowdhury was a front line leader in a number of anti Zia movements from 1976 to 1981 and suffered imprisonment on occasions. She played very active role in anti-Ershad movement from 1983 to 1990 and had been detained as many as eight times.
Matia Chowdhury was elected Member of Parliament in 1991 from sherpur (Nakla-Nalitabari) on Awami League nomination. She played a very vital role in pressing home the demand of Caretaker Government from 1994 to 1996 under the leadership of Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina. She had been an embodiment of protest on the streets during all political movement against Begum Khaleda Zia’s government.
She resigned from the Jatiya Sangsad on 30 December 1994 along with other opposition parliament members. She was arrested and detained. After getting released she took very important role against holding of the farcical polls of 15th February 1996.
Matia Chowdhury was elected parliament member in the general elections on 12 June 1996 on Awami League nomination. She was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister on June 23, 1996 and was given the charges of the Ministries of Agriculture, Food and Disaster Management & Relief.
Matia Chowdhury again returned to the street and showed her complete ‘Agni Kannya’ image against the misrule of 4 party alliance government. As a street level worker she was on the receiving end of police brutality let lose by the Khaleda regime. But she did not give in. Her popularity reached its pinnacle through the street movement this time. She vehemently protested the vile and wrongful move of establishing politics minus Sheikh Hasina the people’s leader.
In the 29th December, 08 Parliamentary Election Matia Chowdhury was elected the Member of Parliament for the 3rd time by defeating her nearest rival by a huge margin. She was sworn in as a cabinet Minister on January 6, 2009. Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina again awarded her the charge of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Life Sketch of Barrister Shafique AhmedMinister for Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs Ministry

Barrister Shafique Ahmed was born on July 16, 1937 at village Narayanpur of Brahmanpara Upazila in Comilla. He is the youngest among four sons and five daughters of Late Taleb Ali and Begum E. Nessa.
Barrister Shafique Ahmed passed Matriculation in 1953 from Comilla Govt. Zilla School in first division, Intermediate in 1955 from Dhaka College in first division. He obtained his honors and Master's degree in Geography from Dhaka University in 1958 and 1959 respectively. He secured first position in second class in both BA (Hon's) and MA examinations. He passed LLB from Dhaka University in 1963 and LLM from King's College, London in 1967. He received his Barrister-at-Law degree from Lincoln's Inn, London in 1967.
Barrister Shafique Ahmed was enrolled as an advocate in the High Court in 1967. He was elected President of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association for 1999-2000 and 2008-2009. He was Chairman of Executive Committee of Bangladesh Bar Council and Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council. He was part time Lecturer of Law Department of Dhaka University from 1969 to 1973. He was Principal of Dhaka City Law College from 1973 to 2005, Syndicate Member of Dhaka University from 1989 to 1991. He was President of Democratic Lawyers Association of Bangladesh affiliated to International Association of Democratic Lawyers and an NGO named Dhustha Shasthya Kendra. He was Secretary General of Law Teachers Association of Bangladesh.
Barrister Shafique Ahmed married Professor Mahfuza Khanam on February 8, 1969 who was Principal of Manikgonj Govt. Mohila Degree College before retirement. Professor Mahfuza Khanam was Vice-President of Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) in 1967. At present she is General Secretary of Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. Barrister Shafique Ahmed and Professor Mahfuza Khanam are blessed with two sons and one daughter. Eldest son Dr. Mahfuz Shafique and daughter Dr. Masrura Shafique are doctors, youngest son Mahbub Shafique is a Barrister from Lincoln's Inn, London, now practicing as an advocate in Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Barrister Shafique Ahmed was skilled sportsman during his student life.
He travelled widely and participated in many international seminars and conferences in different countries.
Barrister Shafique Ahmed has been appointed as the Minister of the Ministry of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs on January 06, 2009.
Life Sketch of Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) A K KhandkerMinister for the Ministry of Planning

Air Vice Marshal (Rtd.) A K Khandker was born in Pabna in 1930.. His Father’s name is Late Khandker Abdul Latif. He Completed his Matriculation in 1947 and ISC in 1949. He Completed his Graduation from PAF College in September, 1952 and PSA in 1965 from Pakistan Air Force Staff College . He started his service carrier as GD Pilot in 1951. He served in Fighter Squadron till 1955 and became Flying Instructor. He was at PAF Academy till 1957.
He served as Flight Commander at Flying Instructors’ School till 1958. Later he became Flight Commander at Jet Fighter Conversion Squadron where he served till 1960.
He was Squadron Commander at PAF Academy till 1961. Afterwards, he became Squadron Commander of Jet Fighter Conversion Squadron where he served till 1965. He served as Officer Commanding of Training wing at PAF Academy in 1966.
A K Khandker was President of PAF Planning Board from 1966-1969. Later, he was posted at Dhaka as Second in Command of PAF Base in 1969. He took part in the Liberation war of Bangladesh and served as Deputy Chief of Staff of Bangladesh Liberation Forces. He represented Bangladesh Liberation Forces at the Surrender Ceremony of Pakistan Forces in Dhaka on December 16 in 1971.
He was Chief of Air Staff, Bangladesh Air Force from 1972 to 1975. He served Bangladesh Biman as Chairman from 1972 to 1973. He also served as High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Australia from 1976 to 1982 and High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India from 1982 to 1986.
He was Minister, Ministry of Planning from October 1986 to March 1990.. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Pabna-2 in 1998. He has again been elected as Parliament member in December 2008. He is now Minister of Planning in the newly appointed cabinet. He has wife, two sons and one daughter.

Life Sketch of Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju Minister for Posts & Telecommunications Ministry
Dhaka, January 25 :
Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, a freedom fighter and veteran Awami Leaguer was born on 2 February, 1944 at Adiabad Dakhin Para under Raipura upazilla in Narshingdi district. His Father late Advocate Afssar Uddin Ahmed was a prominent lawyer, President of Dhaka Bar Association and also the leader of opposition in the Provincial Parliament of 1963. His mother’s name is late Ashrafun Nessa.
Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju completed his graduation from Jagannath College, Dhaka (now Jagannath University) in 1966. He was actively associated with the students politics since his student life. He was elected V.P. of Jagannath College Students Union for two consecutive terms (64-65 & 65-66).
He joined Awami League in 1966. Since then, he actively participated in all the pre-liberation political movements including Anti-Ayub, 6-point demand and mass upsurge of 1969. He has been a member of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Awami League since 1986. He was detained in jail in different spells for his pro and pre-liberation movements.He was the youngest elected member of the Provincial Assembly in 1970.
During the Liberation War in 1971, he received CNC special training in Chakulia, Bihar and was also in charge of the Press and Publication Wing of the Eastern Zone. He was the Chief Co-ordinator of the freedom fighters of Kaliakoir to Kishorgonj sub-division under Sector-3.
He was one of the signatories of the first constitution of Bangladesh as a member of the Gonoparishod after the Liberation War. He was involved in all the major democratic and political movements of Bangladesh as a forerunner, especially during the anti-autocracy movements in the 90s.
He was elected the Member of Parliament from Raipur, Narshingdi, in the 1970, 1996, 2001 and 2008 elections. He was the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Commerce Ministry during 1996-2001.
A pro-people and dedicated politician, Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju has been playing a laudable role in all out development of his area and also the socio-economic upliftment of the people of his area.
Life Sketch of Shajahan Khan, Minister of Shipping

Shajahan Khan was born on 1st January, 1952. He comes of a respectable Muslim family in Madaripur. His father late Advocate Moulavi Asmat Ali Khan was a repected politician, educationist, social worker and Member of Parliament. His mother late Tajan Nesa Begum was a House wife.
He passed the S S C examination from United Islamia high School, Madaripur in 1966 and H S C from Madaripur Nazimuddin College in 1968. Shajhan Khan obtained Bachelor’s Degree from Govt. Nazimuddin College under Dhaka University.
Shajahan Khan started student ploitics by joning the movement against the Hamidur Rahman education commission in 1964. He got inspired with the ideal of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in student politics. He was the elected Secretary of Chchatra Legue of Madaripur subdivision in 1966-67 and 1967-68. He was the GS and VP of Nazimuddin College. He is the Vice President of Jatio Sramik League and Executive President of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation.
He played very singificant role in the historic Liberation war in 1971. He participated in all democratic m
ovement and played active pioneering role.
Shajahan Khan elected Member of Parliament of 9th Jatiya Sangsad on 29th December, 2008 and took oath as a Minister on 31st July, 2009. Earliar he was elected MP four times from 1986.
He is involved in various social activities. Shajahan Khan travelled Russia, India, Nepal, UAE, Newzealand, Malaysia, Singapore, UK, Scotland, Japan, Kenya, Thailand and Italy.
Shajahan Khan is married and is blessed with one daughter and two sons. His wife Sayeda Rokeya Begum is a Teacher.
Life Sketch of Md. Rezaul Karim Hira Minister for the Ministry of Land

Md. Rezaul Karim Hira, a veteran freedom fighter, was born on December 1, 1942 at Charmadhua in Jamalpur district. He is the third son of late Nurul Haque and late Jaigunnesa. After completing his matriculation from Nandina M H K Pilot High school in 1958, he studied intermediate in Mymensingh Ananda Mohan College and Jamalpur Ashek Mahmud College. Later he was detached from his studies for political unrest of that time.
Md. Rezaul Karim Hira was the General Secretary of Sub-Division and District Awami League for five terms from 1970 to 1996. In 1971, he took part in the War of Liberation and served as a Joint Convener of Jamalpur Mohakuma Sangram Parishad formed by Awami League. He was the Motivational Instructor of the freedom fighters at Kaliapara Youth Reception Camp of Mahendraganj in India during the Liberation War.
He was the founder General Secretary of Jamalpur Red Cross Society in 1973 and at present he is the life member of it. He also served in Jamalpur Central Co-operative Bank as its Vice President and President. He was the President of Bangladesh Paribar Parikalpana Samitee of Jamalpur branch for the consecutive 8 years beginning from 1981. He is now the life member of the Samitee. He was the patron and donor of various educational, cultural and religious institutes of his area and held the position of President of Working Committee, Advisor and Member of such organization. He was rewarded National Co-operative Award for 1990-91.
Md. Rezaul Karim Hira was elected Member of Parliament in the 7th and the 8th National Parliament Election. He was the Chairman for the Parliament Standing Committee of Public Assurance and also the member of the Parliament Standing Committee for the Ministry of Planning in 7th National Parliament. Besides, he got the position of member of the Standing Committee of Public Assurance and also the member for the Standing Committee of Cultural Affairs Ministry in the 8th National Parliament Election.
He is currently the member of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) National Committee and the member of District Awami League (AL), Jamalpur.
Md. Rezaul Karim Hira has been elected the member of the parliament in the 9th Parliament Election from Jamalpur-5. He took oath as Minister of Bangladesh Government on 06 January 2009 and assumed the charge of Ministry of Land.

Life Sketch of Abul Kalam Azad, Minister for Information and Cultural Affairs
Dhaka, 30 January :
Abul Kalam Azad comes of a respectable Muslim family of Kheawarchar Ujan village of Bokshigonj Upazila in Jamalpur district. His birth date is March 01, 1939.
He is the son of late Syedur Rahman and Alhaj Samirunnesa. He is second among eight brothers and four sisters.
He passed Matriculation from Rajendra Kishore High School in 1956 and H.S.C from Ananda Mohon College in 1958. Both the institutions are situated at Mymensingh. He passed BA (Hon’s, 1961) and MA (1963) from Political Science Department of Dhaka University. He also obtained LLB (1972) from Dhaka Central Law College.
He started his career as an officer of the then East Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in 1963. When WAPDA was divided in 1969 his service was placed under Power Development Board. In 1975 he joined as chief liaison officer at Cholera Research Laboratory, Dhaka. He served as Head of Personnel Management Department and Deputy Chief of Administration till 1977. When the organization got its new shape as International Center for Diarrhoeal Diseases and Research Bangladesh (ICDDRB) he was posted as Head of Personnel Management Department, Public Relations and Information Officer. He took voluntary retirement from ICDDRB on 12 January 1991.
The root of his political career originated as a student of Dhaka University since 1954. As appreciation of active participation in politics with fame and dignity he became the President of renowned Salimullah Muslim Hall unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League in 959-1960. At DUCSU he was elected as representative of Salimullah Muslim Hall Students Union in 1961-1962 and performed his duties as Drama and Entertainment Secretary. He was put under imprisonment in 1962 for active participation in the movement against Hamidur Rahman Education Committee Report. He was also elected as General Secretary of Salimullah Muslim Hall Students Union in 1963.
Abul Kalam Azad became Member of Parliament for the first time in 1991 on Awami League ticket. For the second time he was elected M.P. in 1996. At that time he was elected as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Information, Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts and Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Institutions. Apart from this he worked with important responsibilities as Panel Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad. He also successfully participated in programme of internationally reputed organizations as World Public Relations Congress, Mumbai, India in 1982, 9th World Public Relations Congress in Amsterdam, Netherlands 1985, International Relations Congress in Australia in 1988, International Parliamentary Seminar organized by National Democratic Institute in Cambodia in 1993.
He visited the United States as an observer of US Presidential Election and role of US Congress under the International Visitors Programme of US Information Agency in 1996. He also attended the meeting of the Standing
Committee on Public Accounts at the SAARC Summit in India in 1997.
Abul Kalam Azad is an associate member of the Jatiya Press Club since 1970 and member of Dhaka Club since 1980. He was General Secretary of Bangladesh Public Relations Association from 1984-85 and 1986-87. He was former President of the ICDDRB Staffs Welfare Association, General Secretary of Water and Power Development Board Officers Association and National Coordinator of International Public Relations Association.He visited USA, UK, Australia, Cambodia, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Egypt, Trinidad and Tobago, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Macao, Bahrain, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and India.
Abul Kalam Azad likes is fond of games and sports. His favorite games are cricket and football. He has made a great contribution to the overall development of his locality, including construction of roads, bridges, culverts, hospitals, schools, colleges and similar social organizations.
His wife Mrs. Anowara was born in a distinguished and respectable family on 03 December 1965 in Doudkandi under Comilla district.
Abul Kalam Azad was elected Member of Parliament from 'Dewangonj and Bokshigonj constituency (No 138 Jamalpur-1) in the ninth parliamentary election. He was appointed Minister for Ministry of Information and Ministry of Cultural Affairs of People's Republic of Bangladesh on January 06, 2009.

Life sketch of Syed Abul Hossain, MPMinister for Communications
Dhaka, April 01 :Syed Abul Hossain has been appointed as the Minister for Communications in the
Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 6 January 2009 following the landslide victory of Awami League-led Grand Alliance in the Parliamentary elections held on 29 December 2008.
Scion of holy and illustrious family, Syed Abul Hossain was born in 1951 at Dashar under Kalkini Police Station in Madaripur district in southern Bangladesh. He studied at the University of Dhaka, from where he obtained the degree of M.Com. in Management. His father late Alhaj Syed Atahar Ali was a direct descendant of the great Sufi Saint of the sub-continent, Hazrat Shah Ali Baghdadi.
Founder of SAHCO International Limited, one of the leading business houses of Bangladesh and owner of several other commercial establishments, Syed Abul Hossain is noted for his contributions to the spread of education in his locality. He set up three colleges, two of which bear his name and are regarded among the best in the country. Another College-D.K Ideal Syed Atahar Ali Academy and College bears the name of his illustrious father. He also pioneered to set up nearly one hundred primary schools in his constituency-Kalkini, Madaripur. Several other institutions-high schools, colleges, madrashas, mosques, eidgahs and socio-cultural organizations and clubs also bear his name and benevolence. He is also the founder President of an NGO, called SAHCO Development Centre (SDC) which is carrying out vital human resources development and other socio-economic uplift activities in Madairpur and neighboring districts. Thanks to his endeavor the socio-economic contour of Kalkini-Madaripur has radically transformed.
A valiant freedom fighter Syed Abul Hossain actively participated in the War of Liberation in 1971 and is widely reputed for his charity and humanitarian work especially during natural disasters like devastating floods in 1988, tidal upsurge at Urir Char and cyclonic storm at Saturia in Manikganj in 1985 and the cataclysmic hurricane which badly battered the coastal belt in 1991.
Elected with a thumping majority in each Parliamentary elections in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008 from Madaripur-3 constituency, Syed Abul Hossain was an influential member of the Parliamentary Standing Committees on the Ministry of Finance and Commerce in the 7th Parliament (1996-2001) and on the Ministry of power, Energy and Mineral Resources in the 8th Parliament (2001-2006). He was the State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives in the first Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He has been the International Affairs Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League since 2003.
Syed Abul Hossain has authored more than a dozen books on socio-economic and political issues facing our nation.He is a regular contributor of articles to various journals and national dailies, both in Bangla and English.
Syed Abul Hossain is an initial Member of the Advisory Council of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) headquartered at Boao, Hainan, P.R.China and the Chief Representative of Bangladesh to the Forum which inter alia comprises Heads of State or Government (present of past) of 26 Asian countries and Australia.
Syed Abul Hossain is a widely traveled person. He performed the holy Hajj. He visited many countries of the world including USA, UK, Japan, Germany, China, Korea, India, Singapore, Thailand etc. In October 1994 he represented Bangladesh’s private sector at the Global Trade Summit at Columbus, Ohio, USA.
Syed Abul Hossain is married to Khwaja Nargis Hossain of Enayetpur, Sirajganj and the couple is blessed with two daughters.

Life Sketch of Enamul Hoque Mostfa Shaheed,Minister for Social Welfare

Enamul Hoque Mostfa Shaheed, a freedom fighter and veteran Awami Leaguer was born in 28 March 1938 in an illustrious family from Chunarughat, Hobigonj. He has been a member of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Awami League since its inception.
He completed his graduation from Bindaban College, Hobigonj and LLB from Dhaka University. Basically he is a Lawyer. But he got devotedly involved in politics.
Enamul Haque has been contributing in voluntary work, social welfare related work and educational movement in his locality for a long time. To establish several schools and colleges he played vital role. During the Liberation War in 1971, he received CNC special training from India. He was director in Youth Camp in our liberation war. He also acted as Civil Affairs Adviser in different sectors.
He played a key role in all anti-Ayub movements in the pre-liberation war scenario and particularly led the mass-upsurge in 1969 and the six points movement. He was detained for his role in the movement. He was involved in all the major democratic political movements of Bangladesh as a forerunner, especially during the anti-autocracy movements in the 90s.
He was elected six times as member of parliament from Chunarughat-Madabppur, Hobigonj in 1970, 1973, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008 elections. In the Fifth National Assembly he was the member of the Standing Committee for Land Ministry. He was Chairperson of the Standing Committee for Planning Ministry and member for Land Ministry of the 1996-2001 parliament. On 6 January 2009, he took oath as Minister and got responsibility of Social Welfare Ministry.
A politician dedicated to the welfare of people, Mr. Shaheed is much loved and adhered by the people of his constituency. He has played a major role in improving the infrastructures, communication systems and livelihood of the people in his area.
His father was late Doctor Abdul Hoque, a prominent medical practitioner in his locality. He visited different countries such as USA, China, Hong Kong, Maxico, Philipines, Singapore as the member of the delegations of our National Assembly.
Mr. Shaheed is married and father of two sons.

Mr. Dilip Barua, new Minister for Industries, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was born in 28th February, 1949. He is the General Secretary of Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal (M.L.), Central Committee. His father, Dr. Subhankar Barua, is a B. Sc. MBBS and his mother, Sukhada Barua, is a house wife. His spouse, Professor Tripti Barua M. A, is the Head of the Department of Philosophy, Abudhar Giffari College, Dhaka. He is the proud father of four daughters. All of them are doctors.
He completed his B.Sc (Hon’s), M.Sc. in Physics, from the University of Dhaka. He also completed MA, Diploma in Journalism and LLB from the same University.
He has a bright and diversified political career. He was elected Assistant Literary Secretary in the College Student’s Union in 1965. He was a leader of the East Pakistan Student Union from 1966-1970 which was a student front of the Communist Party. The Student front was dissolved in 1970 by the Party. He was a member of the Communist Party since 1969 and elected members as Dhaka City Committee of the Party in 1972. He was the President of the Juba Federation (a progressive youth front) during the period 1977-1979. The Party was split (Toaha & Nagen Groups) in 1977 and Mr. Dilip was remained with the group under the leadership of comrade Nagen Sarkar. He was co-opted as a Member of the Central Committee in 1980 and became a member of the Political Bureau in the same year. He re-elected as a member of the political Bureau in the Party’s 4 th National congress in 1982.
In 1984 Mr. Dilip was re-elected as the member of the Political Bureau in the Unity Congress of the Samyabadi Dal (M.L.) (both Toaha & Nagen Groups). He was placed in charge of the post of General Secretary of the Party. He elected General Secretary of the Party in December, 1987 in the Plenary Session of the Party.

He visited China in 1987 as a member of the delegation headed by Late Comrade Md. Toaha. He also visited China as the leader of the delegation in 1990 at the invitation of the CPC. In 1996 he visited Russia to attend at the International Juche Conference. He also visited Vietnam to attend at the Asia and Pacific Cuban Solidarity Conference in 1997. He visited London to attend at National Congress of the New Communist Party of Great Britain in 1997. He also visited China in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 as a leader of the political parties’ delegation to attend various conference and convention. He attended the International Conference sponsored by the Worker’s Party of Belgium in Brussels on 1998, 1999, 2001. He also visited Cuba to attend at the International Solidarity Conference in 2001. In 2006, he visited Seoul to attend the 4th Asian Political Party Conference. He visited China in 2007 as the Deputy Leader of the 16 members left party delegation.
Mr. Dilip is one of the architects of 14 party alliances. He played a vital role in formulation of 31 points reforms of Caretaker government and 23 points programmes. He is one of the front line leaders to launch movement against Khaleda Zia and Nizami Government.
During his long political career he faced different political oppression and harassment. He was imprisoned in the year 1969 as the student leader, in 1983 as a member of the Political Bureau. He lead under ground life for several times on the Political ground.
Before his induction to the cabinet he was the Editor of the Weekly Gana Shakti.
Ramesh Chandra Sen was born at Mondaladum village of Ruhia Union in Thakurgaon district on April 30, 1940. His father’s name was Khitindra Mohan Sen and mother’s name was Balashoree Sen. He passed his B.com from Rangpur Karmichael College in 1963. He is a businessman by profession. He had served as a teacher for a long time. At the same time he got involved in politics as well. In his long life he had performed many social welfare and development works. He built many schools, colleges, madrashas, temples and mosques.
He was elected Member of Parliament from Thakurgoan-1 constituency in the 7 th national parliamentary election in 1996 and the 9th national parliamentary election in 2008. During the 7th
parliamentarian time he took part in Commonwealth Parliament Association (CPA) conference in London as a Member of Parliament. At present he is working as the Minister for Water Resources Ministry of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Ghulam Mohammed Quader was born on 24th February, 1948 at Dinhata, under Kutchbihar District of West Bengal. His father’s name is Late Mokbul Hossain and mother’s name is Late Mazida Khatun.
Mr. Quader passed SSC from Rangpur Zilla School in 1963 and HSC from Carmichael College in 1965 and obtained B.Sc. Engineering (mechanical) Degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1969.
He held very important positions in Dock yeard and Engineering works Ltd. Narayangonj, Engineering and Ship Building Corporation, Bangladesh Tobacco Company Ltd, Jamuna Oil Company Ltd. and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation. From February 1976 to February 1977, he served in the Ministry of Agriculture in Iraq as a Mechanical Engineer.
Mr. Quader participated several international programmes. He took part in Petroleum Management programme at Masachuates, USA in 1984, Public Enterprise Policy and Management programme on Developing Countries at Boston in 1988 and in 1982 he participated in the training programme on familiarization with modern techniques of petroleum handling in Singapore. He completed 13th Senior Staff Course on Public Administration organized by Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University.
He traveled Singapore, Dubai, UK, USA, Namibia, Thailand, Canada, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, South Korea, Turkey, Nepal, Japan, China, Vietnam and many other countries of the world for attending government and private training programmes and seminars.
He was elected Member of Parliament in 7th National Parliament Election as a Jatiyo Party candidate. He played active role as a member of Parliamentary Standing Committee related to Defence Ministry. He was elected Member of Parliament in the 8 th
National Parliament Election held on 1st October, 2001, again nominated by Jatiyo Party. He was a member of Rules of Procedure of National Assembly and Member of Standing Committee related to Ministry of Agriculture. He has been elected as a member of 9 th
National Parliament Election for the third consecutive time. On 6 th January, 2009, he took over the charge as Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry.

Lt. Col. (Rtd.) Muhammad Faruk Khan was born on 18th September 1951 in the renowned and well-known Khan Family of Bezra, Muksudpur Upazilla of Gopalgonj. His father late Serajul Karim Khan (Nanna Khan) and mother late Khaleda Karim Khan are known for their social work. He is the eldest of seven brothers.
After passing the SSC from Armanitola Govt. High School and HSC from Dhaka College, he got commission in Pakistan Army on 18th April 1971. Mr. Khan served in the Army as an Infantry Officer for twenty-six years and took early retirement in 1995 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He obtained graduation degree from Pakistan Military academy and secured Master degree in Defense studies in 1994 from the National University of Bangladesh.
Commerce Minister Lt. Col. (Rtd.) Muhammad Faruk Khan was elected Member of Parliament from Awami League in 1996, 2001 and again in 2009 from Gopalganj-1 constituency encompassing Muksudpur and Kasiani Upazillas. In the last 9th parliamentary election of 2009 he defeated his nearest rival of BNP by a margin of 1, 74,268 votes. Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, son of late Md. Jalal Uddin, was born at Musuddi village under Madhupur upazila of Tangail district in Bangladesh on February 1, 1950. His father was a government employee under Research Wing of the then
Pakistan Agriculture Department. His mother Rajia Khatun is a traditional Bangali housewife.
Dr. Razzaque passed S.S.C Examination from Dhanbari Nawab Institute in 1965. He did his B.Sc(Ag) in 1971 and M.Sc(Ag) in 1972 from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymenshing. He completed his Ph.D in 1983 from Purdue University, USA in Agronomy.
Besides, Dr. Razzaque got higher training on `Farming System Research' from East Anglia University in U.K, `Integrated Agriculture and Rural Development' from United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, `Strategies for Sustainable Agricultural Development' organized by JICA in Japan and `Transfer of Technology' from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is one of the authors of the famous book titled `Methodology Guidelines for Farming Systems Research and Development in Bangladesh’ published by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council BARC, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was engaged as editor of different scientific documents published by BARC during his service period. About 45 research-based papers of Dr. Razzaque have so far been published in different Journals at home and abroad.
Dr. Abdur Razzaque started his professional career as a scientific officer of BARC. He was the national coordinator of `Integrated Farming System Research and Development’ and completed his duties efficiently. He was promoted to the rank of chief scientific officer of BARC. He resigned from service in August 2001 and took part in politics actively.
Dr Razzaque has widely travelled different countries, including United Kingdom, USA, China, France, Belgium, Japan, South Africa, Ginny, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Srilanka.
Dr. Razzaque was a political activist from his student life. In 1969 as a student of Bangladesh Agricultural University, he took part in 6 and 11- point mass movement in 1969 and was arrested by the Pakistan government for being involved in the movement. He was elected as the General Secretary and subsequently the President of Bangladesh Chatra league (Bangladesh Student League) of Bangladesh Agricultural University unit. He was also the member of central executive committee of Bangladesh Chatra League. He took part in the liberation war in 1971 and showed his bravery, courage and devotion to the nation. He was elected as the General Secretary of Bangladesh Agricultural University Central Student Union (BAUCSU) during 1972-73. Dr. Razzaque is now the Agricultural and Cooperative Secretary of central committee of Bangladesh Awami League.
Dr. Md. Abdur Razzaque contested in the Parliamentary Election held in 2001as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League from Modhupur area of Tangail district and was elected as the Member of Parliament. He worked as the member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Agriculture and Estimate Committee during 8th Parliament. He visited different countries as a delegation of Parliamentary Committee as MP.
Dr. Razzaque engaged himself in socio-economic development of his local area from his student life. In 1967 he played a pioneer role to establish a social welfare club named ``Progoti Sangho’’ in his village. Musuddi High School was established through this club in 1969 under his dynamic leadership which was treated as class one educational institute of Modhupur-Dhanbari area of Tangail district. It was a long term dream of the people of this area that Dhanbari would be an Upazila. Dr. Razzaque also played a pioneer role to establish Dhanbari as thana in 1998 during Awami League led government and in 2001 it was decided that Dhanbari would be upgraded as administrative unit as Upazila.
Dr. Razzaque was the elected General Secretary of Bangladesh Krishibid Institution (a professional association of agricultural graduates) for the 1996-97 tenure. He is a member of American Society of Agronomy, Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), Bangladesh Agronomy Society, Bangladesh
Horticulture Society, Bangladesh Krishibid Institutions and many other organizations in different capacity.
Dr. Razzaque has again been elected the Member of Parliament from the constituency Tangail-1(Modhupur-Dhanbari Upazila) in the 9th Parliament Election on December 29, 2008. He was appointed as the Minister on January 6, 2008 and has been given the charge of the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management.
Dr. Razzaque’s wife Shirin Akhtar Banu did her Masters degree with honours in Political Science from University of Dhaka and has been serving as Assistant Professor and Head of the Department in Abu Jar Gifari College, Dhaka. Rezwan Shahriar Sumit and Rezwan Shahnewaz Sujit are two sons and Rosen is the only daughter of Dr. Abdur Razzaque and his wife Shirin Banu.

Dr. Md. Afsarul Ameen was born on 1st January, 1952. He comes of a respectable Muslim family in Chittagong. His father late Dr. Md. Fazlul Ameen was a reputed physician, educationist and social worker.
Mr. Ameen obtained MBBS degree from Chittagong Medical College in 1979.
He got inspired with the ideal of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in student life and engaged in student politics. He was the General Secretary of Chhatra League, Chittagong Medical College. He was elected Relief and Social Welfare Secretary of Chittagong City Awami League in 1992 and Organising Secretary in 1997. He was elected Joint General Secretary of Chittagong City Awami League in 2006.
He played a very significant role in the historic Liberation War in 1971.
Mr. Ameen elected Member of Parliament of 9 th Jatiya Sangsad on 29th December, 2008 and took oath as a Minister on 6th January, 2009.

Dr. Dipu Moni is Bangladesh's new Foreign Minister. She is the first woman to be appointed to that position.
Before her induction to the cabinet Dr. Dipu Moni was Secretary for Women's Affairs and a Member of the Sub-Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Bangladesh Awami League. She is a qualified physician and draws upon advanced qualifications in Public Health and Law and is an Advocate of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. Dr. Dipu Moni represents Chandpur-3 as a Member of Parliament.
Until now the principal focus of her work has been women's rights and entitlements, health legislation, health policy and management, health financing, strategic planning, and health and human rights under the Constitution and law in Bangladesh's economic and social development programmes and foreign policy issues of the region and globally. Over the past ten years Dr. Dipu Moni has represented her leader and party's position to Cabinet Ministers and public representatives of Asia, Europe and USA, Ambassadors and Senior Representatives of International Institutions. She writes, teaches, consults, researches, conducts advocacy programmes, organises and leads free health service clinics with a pool of qualified physicians, and promotes legislation on key issues.
Educated at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, Dhaka Medical College, the country’s Premier Medical School, and at the University of London, Dipu Moni has undertaken specialised courses at John Hopkins and a course at Harvard on Negotiations and Conflict resolution.
Dipu Moni is an avid protagonist of representative politics and women's participation in the political decision- making process. She is one of two Master Trainers for Women Political Activists of the Party in which regard she has trained women political activists under a programme of her Party that she helped design and implement in a close relationship with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) of the United States.
Dr. Dipu Moni is the daughter of the late M. A. Wadud, a close associate of Bangabandhu and H. S. Suhrawardy in the struggle for democracy and the rights of Bangalees, Mr. Wadud was a founding member of the Awami League and is known especially for his role in the Language Movement and as the first Council-elected General Secretary of the East Pakistan Chhatra League. Mr. Wadud suffered imprisonment on several occasions during his political life. After the assassination of the Father of the Nation, upon his refusal to accept a Cabinet position, he was imprisoned by the military government.
Dipu Moni is married to Tawfique Nawaz, one of two Oxbridge educated Senior Advocates of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, Head of an internationally
reputed law firm and a parampara (generational) exponent of at least a 2000 year old Indian Classical Musical form, namely Alaap, on the Grande Flute. They have one son, Tawquir Rashaad, 2O, a law student at the University of London, a winner of the UCL Global Excellence Scholarship from the region comprising the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East, also a parampara exponent of Alaap on the Grande Flute and one daughter, Tani Deepavali, 15, a concert Alaapiya on the Violin.

Renowned grass root leader Md. Abdul Latif Biswas was born at the village of Meghulla under Belkuchi Upazila in Sirajganj district on 11 January 1953. He comes from a noble Muslim family. He is the second son of late Eman Ali Biswas and late Chumbuli Khatun. He did his BA. He was actively involved in student politics from his student life, with the inspiration of Great Leader Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
From the very beginning of his life Mr. Biswas was devoted to restore the rights of the people especially the farmers. He engaged himself to improve socio-economic condition of the people of the country and overall development of the rural area. For this reason, people of his own union Daulatpur under Sirajganj district twice elected him as Union Parishad Chairman. He successfully performed the responsibilities as union parishad chairman for long ten years. He took many programmes to develop his Union. At that time he also tried to protect the victims of erosion of the Jamuna River.
He was elected as Upazila Parishad Chairman in 1989. At the same time, he played active role in local politics as an activist of Bangladesh Awami League. He became the President of Upazila Awami League and member of the working committee of Sirajganj District. He played vital role to establish a secular democratic society and spirit of Liberation war. He was the General Secretary of Bangladesh Tant o khudra Shilpo Sramik League (Weaving and Cottage Industries Labour Union). He was elected as Member of Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) from Sirajganj-5 district in 1996. He played a vital role in constructing two spars on the bank of river Jamuna to protect from river erosion. He also helped to develop of infrastructures like roads, bridges and many institutions. He was the member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Cultural Affaires in seventh parliament.
Mr. Latif Biswas is again elected as MP from Sirajganj-5 constituency in 2008 and daughter of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Hasina has given the responsibility of important Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock for his dynamic leadership and sincere work. This ministry will facilitate the youths by creating huge scope of job which will in turn help to make poverty and hunger free, happy and prosperous Bangladesh.

Advocate Mostafizur Rahman was born on 29th November, 1953 at Zamgram under Fulbari upazilla in Dinajpur district. His father’s name is late Alhaj Mubarak Hossain and Mother’s name is late Shaheda Khatun.
Advocate Mostafizur Rahman started his primary education in Rudrani Primary School. He passed S.S.C examination from Sujapur High School in 1968 and H.S.C examination from Fulbari College in 1970. He received the graduation degree from that college in 1973. He secured the Masters Degree in Sociology from Rajshahi University in 1977 and under that university he also completed the Bachelor of Law in 1986.
Advocate Mostafizur Rahman entered into political sphere when he was in class X. He joined the 6th and 11th Dofa movement actively. He also faught bravely in the liberation war in 1971 under sector 7. He acted as the chairman of the convention of Dinajpur District Chattra League in 1973.
He was selected as the member of Dinajpur District Awami League in 1977 and also selected as the organizing secretary of Fulbari Thana Awami League. He was later selected as the organizing secretary of district Awami League in 1980 and as the General Secretary of Fulbari Thana Awami League in 1984.
Advocate Mostafizur Rahman acted as District Organizing Secretary from 1980 to 1991. He has been acting as the Gengral Secretary of District Awami League since 1992. He was also selected the member of Bagladesh Awami League Central Committee.
Advocate Mostafizur Rahman has been the elected Member of Parliament since 1986 from the constituency No. 10 (Dinajpur-5, Fulbari-Parbatipur). He has been, for the 5th time, eelected as Member of Parliament and on 6 th January 2009 he took oath as the state Minister for the Ministry of Environment and Forest.
He had been the member of the standing committee of Communication Ministry for 15 years, Public Accounts Committee for 10 years and in 2001 he was selected the chairman of the standing committee related to Relief and Rehabilitation Ministry.
After Bagabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s heart rending assassination on 15 August 1975, Advocate Mostafizur Rahman took active part in protesting that barbarian act and he was sent to prison for this. In 1990 he was, for second time, sent to prison for his brave struggling role in establishing democracy and rule of law.
Advocate Mostafizur Rahman joined in several workshops and conferences in different countries including USA, India, Australia and Malaysia. He is also involved in different socio-cultural and educational institutions.

Life Sketch of State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Capt. A B Tajul Islam (Retd.)

Capt. A B Tajul Islam (Retd.) was born on 5 May 1951 in Brahmanbaria district. He is the son of Late Moulovi Rafiquddin Ahmed and Late Mosammat Paribanu. He passed his matriculation and intermediate examinations in 1966 and 1968 respectively and got himself admitted into the University of Dhaka in the dept. of Economics.
He directly took part in the War of Liberation. While studing at the University of Dhaka, he got the opportunity of joining as a GD Pilot in the Pakistan Air Force. At that time Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave a clarion call for the War of Liberation.
In response to that call Capt. Tajul joined Bangladesh Army. During the War, he fought in the sector-3 under the leadership of Gen K M Shafiullah.
In 1975 after the assassination of Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman, he was arrested and was forced to go on premature retirement in 1976. Then he engaged himself in business and politics.
He was elected president of Bancharampur Upazila Awami League (AL) in 1984. Then he was elected Deputy Secretary of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Awami League, also a member of Industry and Commerce Committee of the party.
He was elected as the first secretary of Liberation War Affairs of Awami League. In 1996 he was elected as a member of the Parliament. He was re-elected from Brahmanbaria-6 Constituency in 2008. He was appointed as the State Minister for Liberation War Affairs on January 6, 2009.

Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj MP, State Minister for Home Affairs, was born on 5th January 1970 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is the youngest son of late Tajuddin Ahmad, the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and Syeda Zohra Tajuddin. His father, late Tajuddin Ahmad was a close associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. As the then Prime Minister of the Government headed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he played a historic role during the War of Liberation, which ultimately led to the independence of Bangladesh.
Late Tajuddin Ahmad was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly as a Jukto Front candidate in the historic 1954 elections. He was elected Member of the National Assembly in the 1970 elections and he was again elected Member of Parliament in the 1973.
His mother Syeda Zohra Tajuddin was instrumental in her role as Convener of the Bangladesh Awami League in the re-organization efforts of the party after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four National Leaders on 15th August 1975 and 3rd November 1975 respectively. She is currently a member of the Presidium of the Bangladesh AL, the highest policy making body of the party.
Tanjim Ahmad was elected member of Parliament in the 8 th National Parliament in 2001. Among his many political achievements, he staged a peaceful hunger-strike in front of the National Press Club to protest the political repression and torture inflicted on people, including minorities, in his constituency during the tenure of the four Party Alliance Government. During that period, between 2001 and 2006, he played a leading role both inside and outside of Parliament to establish the rights of the people, the rule of Law and for the advancement of democracy in the country.
He has been a vocal advocate for establishing human rights and for bringing meaningful change in all spheres of government and administration through transparency and accountability.
As a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, Ministry of Youth and Sports, in the 8th National Parliament, he played a significant role for establishing the right to employment for the youth and advancement of social programmes that engage the youth to play a constructive role in society.
Tanjim Ahmad is an Assistant Secretary of the Awami League Central sub-committee and he has been assigned to the AL Central sub-committee on Foreign Affairs. In this capacity, he has attended numerous workshops, seminars and conferences in the local, national and international stage. He had attended a conference on “Peace Building and Conflict Resolution” at Wilton Park in the UK, visited India as an official guest of the Government of India and participated in many other programmes throughout the world which has helped shape his worldview.
He has the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science and International Relations from Gordon University, USA.
Tanjim Ahmad was elected Member of Parliamement for the second time in a row from 197, Gazipur-4 constituency in the National Parliament Election held on the 29th December 2008. He won by a substantial margin, securing 62% of the popular votes.
He took oath as State Minister of the Government of Bangladesh on the 6th January, 2009 and was appointed to the Ministry of Home Affairs by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the same day.

State Minister for Science and Information & Communication Technology Yeafesh Osman was born in Hoogli, West Bengal on 5 th January, 1946 and came to Chittagong in 1948. His wife’s name is Bula Ahmed and he has only one son- Eshrar Osman.
Son of Late Professor Shawkat Osman and Saleha Osman, he passed the Secondary School Certificate Examination from Siddheswari High School, Dhaka in 1964. He did his graduation in Architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology in 1970.
He was elected as the Vice President of the Engineering University Central Student’s Union in 1970. He was the founder Secretary of Institute of Architects, Bangladesh. Later he joined Bangladesh Awami League and became its Science and Technology Secretary and involved in various social works.
He is a Freedom Fighter who fought the liberation war of Bangladesh in Sector No. 2 in 1971.
Yeafesh Osman, in his professional carrier, worked as the Managing Director of Prokalpa Upodeshta Ltd. from June, 1983 to 5 th January, 2009. He also worked as a Senior Architect in Thariani & Co. from May 1974 to April 1983. He served as a Govt. Architect in Housing & Settlement Department, Govt. of Bangladesh from May 1972 to April 1974 and also worked as a Junior Architect under F. R. Khan from October 1970 to April 1972. He participated in the Seminar on Domestic Engineering Consultant, jointly organized by RRTD, ERD in association with FIDIC, WORLD BANK, ODA & BACE at Dhaka in March 1995.
He published his books namely- “Bongo Amar Janani Amar” and “Noshto Kal Koshto Kal”.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Hasan Mahmud comes from a distinguished Muslim family in Chittagong. He was born in Chittagong in 1963. His father Advocate Mohammed Nurussafa Talukdar is a renowned lawyer of Chittagong and a former Public Prosecutor of Greater Chittagong and Chittagong Hill districts, and also the former President of the Chittagong District Lawyers’ Association. Dr. Mahmud’s mother Kamrun Nahar Begum is also a renowned lawyer and a human rights activist from Chittagong. She is the President of the Human Rights Association, Chittagong Chapter.
After completing his undergraduate (1988) and graduate (1989) programmes (with honours citation) in Chemistry from Chittagong University, Dr. Hasan Mahmud obtained a post-graduate Diploma in Human Ecology (Environmental Sciences) from Vrije Unversity of Brussels in 1993. Widening focus, Dr. Mahmud obtained his Second Masters in International Politics from Universite Libre des Bruxelles in 1996. In the same year, he obtained his Third Masters in Advanced Studies in Human Ecology (Environmental Science) from Vrije University of Brussels. Dr. Hasan Mahmud obtained an International Certificate in Human Ecology from the International Association of Human Ecology, Geneva, in 1996.
Dr. Mahmud completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry from Limburg University Centrum, Belgium, in 2001.
Dr. Hasan Mahmud speaks French and Dutch. He completed a Diploma in French Language (two years’ course) from the University of Chittagong in 1985, and a certificate course in Dutch Language from Limburg University Centrum, Belgium.
Dr. Mahmud attended a number of learned international conferences across the world in areas such as ecology, environment, environmental analytical chemistry, Arsenic contamination, environmental law, nutrition and food security, human rights, information technology. A widely traveled person, Dr. Mahmud has visited well-over fifty countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
By profession, Dr. Mahmud used to be an Adjacent Faculty member of a few reputed Universities–of significance in both South Asia and Europe–including East West University (teaching Environmental Science and Bangladesh Studies), Peoples University of Bangladesh (teaching Environmental Science and Socioeconomic Studies of Bangladesh), European Institute for Strategic Studies, Brussels, Belgium (Visiting Lecturer on Bangladesh and South Asian politics). Side by side with teaching, Dr. Mahmud is also engaged in the container service sector.
Dr. Hasan Mahmud has a long tenure of political legacy to his credit. He first came to limelight as the General Secretary of the Government Intermediate College Chattra League in 1979. He was the founder General Secretary of the Government Mohosin College Chattra League in 1980, was the Education and Cultural Affairs Secretary of Chittagong City Chattra League in 1982, and later, the Senior Vice President of Chittagong University Chattra League in 1986. Dr. Mahmud became the President of Chittagong University Chattra League in 1989, and during the first major democratic transition of the country – Dr. Mahmud was elected as the Chairman of All Party Alliance Election Conducting Committee in 'Chaksu' Election 1990.
Dr. Mahmud has been a member of Chittagong North District Awami League since 1992. Abroad, he held the post of the Senior Vice-President of Belgium Awami League in 1993 and became the General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, Belgium Unit, for the tenure 1995 to 2001. He was elected President of Bangladesh Students Association of Vrije University of Brussels (VUB) during the 1993-94 Session. Dr. Mahmud was elected President of the “International Students Association” of Vrije
University of Brussels (VUB) during the 1994 - 95 Session. It may be mentioned that this was the only organization of VUB recognized by the university to represent more than twelve hundred foreign students from more than 60 countries of the world. Dr. Mahmud was appointed Special Assistant to the-then Leader of the opposition and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on 01 November 2001. At the same time, he became the Forest and Environment Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League central committee since December 2002.
As Special Assistant to Sheikh Hasina, Dr. Mahmud worked on foreign affairs and human rights. His responsibilities included, amongst others, representing Her and Bangladesh Awami League in major international conferences, symposia, and seminars, maintenance of foreign liaison and all official foreign correspondence on behalf of the leader and the party.
Dr. Hasan Mahmud is an avid debater and an eloquent reciter. He was the Team Leader of the Government Muslim High School (Chittagong, Bangladesh) Junior Debate Team in 1975, and also its Scout Team Leader in 1977. As Team Leader, he represented the Suhrawardi Hall of Chittagong University Debate Team in the National TV debate in 1987. Dr. Hasan Mahmud used to be associated with a leading Group Theatre of the Country, “Teerjak”, during his university days. He loves hockey– both for its calibrated speed and its mass appeal.
A passionate humanitarian, Dr. Mahmud worked for the Junior Read Cross during his school days. Dr. Mahmud is also a member of Green Peace International, Netherlands.
Life Sketch of Dipankar Talukdar, MP State Minister, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs

Dipankar Talukdar was born on 12th December, 1952 at Bananupa Champaknagor of Rangamati sadar upazilla. His father late Hemanta Prashad was a tribal welfare officer of Pakistan Government of Chittagong Hill Tracts and his mother Bidyut Prova Talukdar was a housewife.
Dipankar Talukdar secured 1st division in SSC examination from Bandarban Govt. High School in 1968. He passed HSC examination with 1st division from Dhaka college in 1970. In 1974 Dipankar Talukdar obtained honours degree from Dhaka University in English literature. On 15th August 1975, when Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated, he actively took part in protesting that barbarian act. Therefore he could not participate in MA examination.
In 1969 he entered into political sphere involving himself actively in mass upsurge against misrule of West Pakistan government. He was imprisoned for taking part in that movement. Dipankar Talukdar fought bravely in the liberation war in 1971. In 1972 he was elected member of central committee of Bangladesh Chattra Leauge (BCL). In 1973 he was also elected BCL’s secretary of international affairs. Later during the changed situation he took political shelter in India. He had been in India for 10 years and then in 1986 he returned to his homeland and was elected the member of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League central committee and general secretary of Rangamati district Awami League. He was again sent in imprisonment in 1987 for his valiant effort in establishing democracy and rule of law.
Dipankar Talukdar was elected MP in 1991 general election from Rangamati and was made the member of parliamentary standing committee related to Ministry of Environment and Forest. In 1996 general election he was again elected MP from that constituency. Dipankar Talukdar was also the honourable member of House Committee of National Parliament, Bangladesh National Education Committee, Parliamentary standing committee of Ministry of Establishment, Chittagong University senate committee, and most importantly, the member of the National Committee of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.
The name Dipankar Talukdar will ever be remembered for his contribution in the historical Chittagong Hill Tracts peace treaty on 2th December, 1997. He was elected the member of national committee which implemented CHT peace treaty in 1998. He was made the chairman of CHT Affairs Taskforce and in the same year elected the chairman of Rotary Club of Rangamati. Again he was nominated for 2001 general election but he was defeated in a result of many conspiracies but he was reelected the chairman of Rangamati District Awami League.
Dipankar Talukdar joined several workshops and conferences abroad. Hevisited 21 countries including India, China, USA, UK, Japan, Franch, Soviet Union, and Garmany. He has also been involved in various socio-cultural and educational institutions.
In the general election held on 29th December, 2008, he has been elected as MP for the third time and on 6th January, 2009 he took oath as the state Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Ministry of Sheikh Hasina’s Cabinet.
Dipankar Talukdar got married with Bita Talukdar and is the proud father of only one son named Arkopal.

Dhaka, April 01 :Syed Abul Hossain has been appointed as the Minister for Communications in the
Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 6 January 2009 following the landslide victory of Awami League-led Grand Alliance in the Parliamentary elections held on 29 December 2008.
Scion of holy and illustrious family, Syed Abul Hossain was born in 1951 at Dashar under Kalkini Police Station in Madaripur district in southern Bangladesh. He studied at the University of Dhaka, from where he obtained the degree of M.Com. in Management. His father late Alhaj Syed Atahar Ali was a direct descendant of the great Sufi Saint of the sub-continent, Hazrat Shah Ali Baghdadi.
Founder of SAHCO International Limited, one of the leading business houses of Bangladesh and owner of several other commercial establishments, Syed Abul Hossain is noted for his contributions to the spread of education in his locality. He set up three colleges, two of which bear his name and are regarded among the best in the country. Another College-D.K Ideal Syed Atahar Ali Academy and College bears the name of his illustrious father. He also pioneered to set up nearly one hundred primary schools in his constituency-Kalkini, Madaripur. Several other institutions-high schools, colleges, madrashas, mosques, eidgahs and socio-cultural organizations and clubs also bear his name and benevolence. He is also the founder President of an NGO, called SAHCO Development Centre (SDC) which is carrying out vital human resources development and other socio-economic uplift activities in Madairpur and neighboring districts. Thanks to his endeavor the socio-economic contour of Kalkini-Madaripur has radically transformed.
A valiant freedom fighter Syed Abul Hossain actively participated in the War of Liberation in 1971 and is widely reputed for his charity and humanitarian work especially during natural disasters like devastating floods in 1988, tidal upsurge at Urir Char and cyclonic storm at Saturia in Manikganj in 1985 and the cataclysmic hurricane which badly battered the coastal belt in 1991.
Elected with a thumping majority in each Parliamentary elections in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008 from Madaripur-3 constituency, Syed Abul Hossain was an influential member of the Parliamentary Standing Committees on the Ministry of Finance and Commerce in the 7th Parliament (1996-2001) and on the Ministry of power, Energy and Mineral Resources in the 8th Parliament (2001-2006). He was the State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives in the first Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He has been the International Affairs Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League since 2003.
Syed Abul Hossain has authored more than a dozen books on socio-economic and political issues facing our nation.He is a regular contributor of articles to various journals and national dailies, both in Bangla and English.
Syed Abul Hossain is an initial Member of the Advisory Council of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) headquartered at Boao, Hainan, P.R.China and the Chief Representative of Bangladesh to the Forum which inter alia comprises Heads of State or Government (present of past) of 26 Asian countries and Australia.
Syed Abul Hossain is a widely traveled person. He performed the holy Hajj. He visited many countries of the world including USA, UK, Japan, Germany, China, Korea, India, Singapore, Thailand etc. In October 1994 he represented Bangladesh’s private sector at the Global Trade Summit at Columbus, Ohio, USA.
Syed Abul Hossain is married to Khwaja Nargis Hossain of Enayetpur, Sirajganj and the couple is blessed with two daughters.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku was born on May 31, 1948 in a noted muslim family at the village Brishalikha under Bera Upazila of Pabna District. He is the third son of Late Juran Uddin Sardar and Musammat Rahima Khatun.
He participated in inter-school, inter-university and national swimming competitions during the period 1962-1973. He became runner-up in 1968 in a swimming competition of the then Punjab University, Pakistan. In addition, he was a successful swimmer and water-polo player in Rajshahi University.
After passing SSC in 1965, he got himself admitted in Bera College. He led 6-point movement as the President of Bera College Chattra League. He was enrolled into Rajshahi University after passing HSC in 1967. He was elected as Assistant Sports Secretary of Rajshahi University Central Student Union (RUCSU) for his significant contribution to the Rajshahi University sports arena.
He was elected as General Secretary of the then Zinnah Hall (Presently Sher-e-Bangla) student union. He also played an important role as one of the leading student leaders of the Rajshahi University Chatra Shangram Parishad. He led the procession of 17 February, 1969 demanding the trial of the murder of Sergeant Johurual Haque and unconditional release of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with the withdrawal of Agartala conspiracy case against him.
He actively participated in the Liberation War in 1971. Having taken military training at Deradun in India, he led liberation war in wider free zone of Pabna.
He became the President of Rajshahi University Chattra League during 1972. He was elected as General Secretary of RUCSU in 1973-74 and as the Vice-President of Central Executive Committee of Bangladesh Chattra League in the same year. His younger brother Abdul Khalek received martyrdom during the glorious Liberation War of 1971. After completing his academic career in 1974, Mr. Tuku started his career as a lawyer in Pabna Judge Court. He was elected General Secretary of Pabna District Lawyer Samity. He served the duty of Vice-President of District Awami League from 1996 to 2005 in different terms. He also became the member of Bangladesh Bar-Council from 1999 to 2002. In 2005, he was elected the General Secretary of Pabna District Awami League. Now he is the General Secretary of the National Four Leader Parishad Central Committee and the Presidium Member of Awami Lawyer Parishad Central Committee.
He was elected as the Member of Parliament of 9th Parliamentary Election and he took oath as the State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on 24 January 2009.
His wife Professor Lutfunnesa Begum was the Principal of Government College. Mr. Haque is the proud father of three sons. His eldest son SM Arif Shams is completing Barrister at Law at Halbourn College in London. His second son SM Saif Shams (Saadi) is the Lecturer of Computer Science Department of Shahjalal Science and Technology University. Now he is getting higher education in South Korea with scholarship. His youngest son SM Nasif Shams (Roni) is doing his PhD on Solar Energy at Dublin University of Ireland with scholarship.
