What You Need to Know about Lyme Disease

by Carolee J. Smith, MSN, APRN, FNP-C

Nurse Practitioner at New Creation Healing Center

Lyme disease caused by the bacterium Borellia Burgdorferi is the most commonly

reported tick-borne disease in New Hampshire. Other tick-borne diseases include

Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis. It is possible to become infected with Lyme disease

and other bacterial or parasitic infections at the same time. The most vulnerable to

be infected include those who spend time in grassy, wooded areas and people with

chronic medical conditions or a compromised immune system. Seniors are at

highest risk of illness complications if infected.

Anaplasmosis is a disease caused by bacterium Anaplasma Phagocytophilum and is

transmitted to people by an infected deer tick which are carried by voles, deer and

mice. Symptoms of Anaplasmosis include: Fever, headache, chills, nausea, muscle aches and (rarely) rash.

This is a therapy that uses light touch, about the weight of a nickel, to work with your body's natural

rhythms. This technique can be worked into any massage or be booked as a stand alone session. When done

as a solo technique session, clients remain fully clothed and sessions last 30 to 60 minuets.

This type of bodywork is beneficial for anyone and is one of the many techniques that I often use during a

mixed modality session. This work is especially helpful for those who have suffered from physical trauma,

including brain injuries, headaches, chronic neck and back pain, central nervous system disorders, autism, Alz-

heimer's and dementia, learning disabilities, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, TMJ, PTSD and so much

more. For more information or to schedule a session contact the office. May God bless your day greatly!

Massage Spotlight — CranioSacral Therapy (CST)

Babesiosis is a rare, severe and sometimes fatal tick-borne disease caused by various types of Babesia (a

microscopic parasite) that affects red blood cells. Symptoms include fever, extreme fatigue, dehydration, men-

tal confusion and anemia lasting several days to several months.

Fortunately, all tick-borne diseases can be prevented by protecting yourself when in tick-infested areas. The

New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services recommends the following:

* Wear light colored clothing to make it easier to see ticks

* Tuck pants into socks and shirts into pants

* Use insect repellent >20% DEET, or oil from lemon eucalyptus

* Treat clothes with Permethrin

* Perform tick checks every 2-3 hours when outdoors

* Check your animals who go outside and share your living space.

Removing the tick:

* Do not remove the tick using household remedies or petroleum jelly. As the tick struggles, it will secrete

infectious fluids into you (increasing your risk of disease)

* Grasp mouth parts with tweezers as close as possible to the skin

* Be careful not to squeeze, crush or puncture the tick body

* If you are concerned about incomplete removal, or have concerns about your health after being bitten by a

tick, contact your health care provider.

Talk with your health care provider if you have been bitten by a tick that has been embedded

for more than 24 hours. A one-time dose of Doxycycline may help prevent Lyme disease.

LATE S UMMER 2019 Page 3

From the Doctor: “Are You Taking New Patients?”

In the past, many of you have asked me this question. We are finally happy to be

able to say, “Yes, we are!”

We are delighted to welcome Carolee Smith, APRN, to our staff. She will be per-

forming intake visits with our new patients on their arrival into the practice. Her

arrival will also allow us to extend our Tuesday and Wednesday hours to 6 p.m.

If you have a friend or family member interested in becoming a new patient, he

or she can complete a new patient intake form and return it to us. The form is

available at the front desk. Terry will then call to set up times for new patients

to complete their initial paperwork and be scheduled for a new patient visit with

Nurse Practitioner Carolee. I will be making every effort to meet each new

patient as well. —Dr. Mary Pearson

From Terry, Billing Coordinator

Welcome aboard to all our new patients. As you begin your time with us, be

sure to call and make your first appointment so we can meet you and establish

you as a patient here. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call. We look

forward to hearing from you.

There have been challenges with some of our patients receiving bills from either

Boston Clinical Lab (781) 893-1557 or Quest 1 (866) 697-8378 in response to

having the incorrect insurance billed. When that happens, there’s no need to call

our office. You can resolve the errors of the labs by calling Boston Clinical or

Quest directly and give them the correct insurance plan so that they can process

the claim correctly.

Our office finds it helpful when you have changes in your insurance, address, or even your name, that you let

us know about it. Our office policy is that when you have any changes, we ask you to fill out a new registra-

tion form so that we can keep all of your information updated. The name that is on your insurance card must

match the one with which I send claims to the insurance company. If it doesn’t, your claim will be rejected.

Once you fill out the new form, we get rid of the old one. Thank you for your help.

Important information for any patient with MEDICARE INSURANCE:

Please be sure to give the receptionist your Medicare card at your next appointment. Medicare has done away

with the Identification number that includes your social security number. Starting January 2020, the Billing

Coordinator (me) will no longer be able to send claims with your old Medicare ID. Your assistance in this

transition is very much appreciated. —Terry Legare, Billing Coordinator

Healthcare Portal

Our Electronic Health Record (EHR) vendor, RxNT, gives our medical patients the ability to access PARTS of

your medical record. If you don't currently have access to your healthcare portal or in accessing your health-

care portal you feel that your information is not correct please contact the office or let us know at your next

appointment. The portal has its limitations. If you have lab work done anywhere other than Quest you will

not see it in your healthcare portal. Not to worry! We have it in your electronic chart. We ask that you NOT

use the healthcare portal as a way to contact us with concerns or to request appointment. Please call our office

with any questions. May God bless your day greatly! Jennifer J. Jubinville, BCMT, CPMT

you are not limited to see only that provider for your visits to our office. We are accepting new patients.
