Adios Dr. Nathan Kowalsky! Interviewer: Nathan,

where did you go? Dr. Kowalsky: I am doing a sabbatical in Belgium! Interviewer: Why did you choose Belgium?Dr. Kowalsky: I chose Belgium specifically because a number of professors from my doctorate are still here, and I really want to work with them before they retire. Plus, the university here has a huge library of English books, which makes it easier to do my work than if I were in France or Germany, for example.Interviewer: Which university will you be working at?Dr. Kowalsky: The Catholic University of Louvain which was founded in 1425 and is the oldest Catholic University in the world. My academic unit will be the Institute of Philosophy, which is its own faculty, founded by the Neo-Thomist Cardinal Mercier in 1889. Interviewer: What kind of research are you doing? Dr. Kowalsky: My main goal is to write a book based on my doctoral thesis which I wrote almost ten years ago. The topic is the problem of evil in nature, which is an old problem that philosophers of religion continue to struggle with: why does God allow the natural world to cause so much human and animal suffering? Interviewer: Will you be teaching in Belgium?Dr. Kowalsky: To my surprise, yes! One of the conditions of my position as “visiting professor” requires that I give a Master’s-level seminar. The topic we’ll be covering is the Anthropocene (the proposed new geological epoch named after the massive impacts humanity is having on Earth) and the environmental apocalypse.

“And men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of

the stars, yet pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought.” - St. Augustine

Interviewer: What did you like most about your trip to Guatemala? Kaley: My favorite part was being able to physically live out the lessons of Catholic Social Teaching. Interviewer: What did you learn from your trip?Kaley: The biggest thing I learned was to be critically aware of my role as a social actor in society, both locally and internationally.Interviewer: How do you describe your experience in Guatemala?Kaley: It was life changing, an influential memory I am sure I will continue to reflect upon for years to come.Interviewer: Who would you recommend this trip to?Kaley: Anyone who is looking to reflect upon or critically discuss faith, Christian Theology, or the ongoing role of Catholicism in society. Any student would benefit from this course; it is a unique learning opportunity and travel experience.

Impact of International Field Education

Congratulations Stephen & Erin!Stephen Beland & Erin Morgan were united in Holy Matrimony at St. Joseph’s College Chapel on July 12, 2014 with Fr. Jefferson Thompson, csb, presiding.

“I know of no other means to reach perfection than by love. To love: how perfectly our hearts are made for this! Sometimes I look for another word to use, but, in this land of exile, no other word so well expresses the vibrations of our soul. Hence we must keep to that one word: love.” - St. Therese of Lisieux

Dear Donors,

“A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.” - Basil the Great

I want to thank you for the ongoing support of your prayers, volunteer hours, and financial contributions. This ensures our continued and vibrant Catholic presence at the University of Alberta.

Over the last year, your financial contributions were just over $615,000. Close to half this amount was directed to Campus Ministry and related operations. This is extremely important because we provide a Christ centred, essential service that by its very nature, does not generate income but requires substantial financial resources. Demands on our Campus Ministry team will only increase as we look forward to welcoming an additional 284 St. Joe’s residents in September of 2015.

Close to the other half of the $615,000 went toward the unrestricted and various restricted endowments including the Building Renovation Fund, the William Hsu Memorial Scholarship and the new St. Joseph’s College women’s residence due to open next September. We have made substantial renovations to the men’s residence over the last few years. In the last 2 years alone we spent close to $200,000 upgrading the second floor including expanded and residence laundry facilities. We will perform the same upgrades to the third floor over the next two years.

Thank you again for your continued support!

Sincerely in Christ

Fr. Terry Kersch, csb, President
