St. Brigid’s Catholic Primary School, Officer Term 1 Week 9 NEWSLETTER 25 th March, 2015 Dear Parents, “Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.” Steve Maraboli St Brigid’s has always been very proactive in catering for the wellbeing of our students. At St Brigid’s we believe in the importance of wellbeing practices which lead us, as a school community, to promote positive relationships between all members. Our school has many programs and practices such as Bounce Back, Cool Calm Kids, circle time and Social groups that aim to assist children to be happy, to feel good about themselves, to develop resilience and to respect other members of our school community. In addition to the following programs we will be implementing another whole school program called “Bully Busters”. There will be three sequentially layered workshops for students conducted by Bully Busters staff. The first teaches children the foundations of assertive behaviour and the dangers of certain types of reactions and ways to respond to teasing and bossy behavior (Foundation to Year2). The second session teaches children the different types of bullying behavior and to better understand how it impacts on others and the role of the bystander (Year 3 to 4). The third session will be equipping the children with some practical strategies to respond, as a bystander or a target and how to behave in assertive ways (Year 5 to 6). The student sessions will be run on Monday May 25 th and Tuesday May 26 th 2015. We endeavor to create meaningful home school relationships, whereby parents and staff work in partnership for the benefit of all students. Therefore staff will be participating in Professional Development in this area led by “Bully Busters” and parents have the opportunity to participate in an information evening. Staff will also be attending this session. I strongly advise parents to attend this session and we will be providing more information including confirmation of the date in the coming weeks. ST. “Christ became obedient to us even to death, dying on the Cross. Therefore God
raised him on high and gave him a name above all other names.” Philippians 2:8-9 This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday (Passion Sunday) and we begin the solemn celebration of
Holy Week. The Passion of Christ refers to his arrest, trial and death. Holy Week is a time
of intense preparation for the Easter Triduum, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter
Vigil. The palms we use today symbolize Christ’s triumph while the cross is the symbol
of the death through which his triumph is achieved.
On Palm Sunday we commemorate Jesus triumphant entry
into Jerusalem, his arrest and death. When Jesus entered
the city on a donkey there was great jubilation and the
people cried out, “Hosanna!” waving palm branches singing,
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” This
jubilation suddenly changed to one of darkness, suffering
and death. The chief priests and teachers of the Law secretly plotted to get rid of
Jesus. They arrested him and crowds turned on Jesus and shouted out: “Crucify Him,
Crucify Him.”
Jesus reached the lowest depth of suffering. He was betrayed by his closest friends and yet
he forgave them. He understood Peter’s weakness when Peter denied him three times. He
was patient with his friends when they could not stay awake while he was praying. Jesus was
insulted, abused and suffered a cruel crucifixion. “With a loud cry Jesus breathed his last.”
On Palm Sunday, as we begin the holiest week, let us set aside time to reflect on the Passion
of Christ. During this time we are invited to follow Jesus’ story and journey with him from
his humble, yet triumphant entry into Jerusalem to our standing at the foot of the cross. If
we centre our thoughts on Jesus and allow ourselves to truly know Jesus we learn more about
ourselves and our response to the suffering of others and the value we place on all human
life. Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your cross and resurrection,

PARISH STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM 2015 - WEEK ONE St Michael's Parish Berwick
OUR PARISH COMMUNITY
Dear friends,
On our return form school holidays we commence a special program – a Parish
Stewardship Program which recognises that “Parishes are the Heartbeat of the
Church.”
Our Parish School
Our wonderful school is an integral part of our parish community and the mission of
the parish. We have a strong commitment to Catholic education – providing our
children with a strong faith as well as academic education.
As a school family why should I be involved?
By choosing to send your children to our school you have made the decision to be a
part of our parish community. We welcome that commitment. This Program will
reaffirm the core values of what it means to be a member of our parish community
and has the potential to enhance our faith.
What is the Program about?
Over the course of the next few weeks we will ask ourselves what it means to be a
part of our parish community here at St Michael's Parish Berwick. With the assistance of a range of events and materials –
speakers at Mass, banners, bulletins, brochures and the main event of the Program, the Parish Information Meeting - we will
reflect on and discuss the three key areas that identify our parish as a special community of faith:
We are a parish that celebrates faith. We know the importance of coming together as a community to celebrate the Eucharist at
Mass – it is the foundation of who we are as a Catholic community. But importantly, we don’t merely attend Mass, we celebrate
our faith. As Pope Francis says, “………it is a beautiful thing to do.”
We are a parish that values engagement. We recognise the importance of living our faith through involvement in parish groups
and ministries. You are encouraged to be involved either through our parish school or in the other opportunities listed in the
Program Time & Talent sheet.
We are a parish that supports generously. We firmly believe in the need to plan and budget for our personal financial
commitment to our parish – giving us the resources to sustain our parish today and to grow and respond to Pope Francis’ call to
Mission.
We encourage your active involvement in the Program – read the materials, listen to our speakers at Mass each week and discuss
the issues with your family and friends. We also invite you to attend the key meeting of the Program – the Parish Information
Meeting on 19 April 2015 at 7:30 pm.
Let us all use this Program as a wonderful opportunity to grow our special community of faith.
Yours in Christ,
Fr Peter Slater Mr Ken Gale
