President’s Message Edith Martin. 9725 1578

Greetings to all Members,

We are still wondering who deposited $60 cash into our Bendigo Bank account on Thursday, December 31st. An ID with any deposit is imperative for payments

to be registered accurately.

Another month seems to have flown by and, before yet more time passes, I consider it timely for us to thank all the volunteers within our club that generously give their time and energy to keep assorted wheels turning so smoothly. We really appreciate all you do.

Referring to an article from 30th August 2012 (http://www.ethicaljobs.com.au/blog/volunteers-worth-more-to-australia-than-mining), it’s indeed gratifying to find articles attesting to the true value of volunteering in Australia - that has been estimated to be as much as $200 billion. This is significantly more than the entire mining industry, which contributes about $121 billion to Australia's GDP but only employs about 187,000 people directly. It has been proved that volunteers generally get a lot of satisfaction from helping others, enhancing the quality of their life and their health. They are shown to be fitter, more mentally alert and more socially connected than people who do not volunteer.

Leonard has yet again made excellent arrangements, for our many golfers and friends, to travel off to Queenscliff on the 23rd March for four enjoyable days by the seaside. We wish them smooth greens, low scores, blue skies and a relaxing, fun-filled breakaway on Swan Bay. ‘Life is Better Together.’

CYCLING – John S. 9725 0670

NEWSFLASH!

At the Evandale Village Fair on February 23rd, our Murray Scott successfully defended his 2018 National Penny Farthing Championship (over 70’s).

This event started in 1983 and is recognised internationally as the largest annual event in the world devoted to racing antique bicycles.

“Penny Farthing “was the first mass produced bicycle in 1870 subsequently phased out by the introduction of the chain driven “safety bicycle “ some twenty years later.

GOLF – Peter G. (9722 1037) & Marion (9725 0740)

Hello Golfers,

We experienced a couple of humid mornings for our golf in February. It’s lucky that we have been starting a bit earlier, because we miss most of the clammy weather occurring as the morning progresses. We also experienced a lovely

Autumn-like morning, which was a welcome break and a sign of things to come.

In keeping with the good weather, we have come in with numerous birdies and a couple of googlies - and not a few low scores. Our numbers have been pretty high, with up to six groups hitting off from the first tee. This is just about a maximum manageable number.

We’ve celebrated a couple of birthdays this month - with Gayle and Morris having a cake baking competition. After everyone sampled a piece of each cake, it was adjudicated to be a draw. Once again, for the after-game coffee we’ve welcomed members who haven’t been able to play golf.

We trialled a game of Ambrose on 28th February, playing in five teams, and it was well received. Team 2 (pictured) triumphed with the best gross score (33) and, with the best Ambrose handicap, their net score was 27.5. Team 2 also starred with a birdie 3 on the 2nd and an Eagle 2 on the 3rd hole. The ever-loyal Eve joined us again, and for the first time since her illness she walked around the nine holes with Team 4.

Golfers are excitedly anticipating our Golf Getaway at Queenscliff in March.

Cheers & regards, Marion & Peter (co-cordinators)
