New Large Print books

New to the library is a range of large print Quick Reads,

which are shelved in Fiction on the ground floor. They are

positioned at the end of the main fiction run, next to the

audio books.

We hope they will prove useful for study or leisure, so if

there is a title you would like to see in large print format,

why not recommend it for purchase? We are always on

the lookout for new resources to add to stock.

Story Time

In another new venture for the Library, we have created a

Story Time area, with a bright floor mat and a book

display car.

In liaison with the Butterflies Nursery team and Child Care

lecturers, students have the opportunity to read to

nursery children and plan activities to follow. In our first

pilot session students helped visiting tots make their own

‘Very Hungry Caterpillars.’

We are hoping these activities will become a regular

feature. It was lovely seeing the students working with

the small children – listening, playing and drawing in the

Library.

Book Review - Kes

by Barry Hines Book Review by Barry Ingledew

Although written in the 1960's this book remains as poignant

and striking as it was when published. Depicting the life of a

teenage boy, named Billy Casper, the book covers just one day of

his life. In that single day the book

encapsulates the boy’s dedication

towards his Kestrel, his turbulent home

life and troubled schooling. The brutality

of life around the mines of Yorkshire is

depicted perfectly and the author, once

a teacher himself, paints an astute

portrait of education at that time.

Throughout the entire book its main

character is depicted struggling against the people who oppress

him - his family, teachers and those who say he will 'work down

the mines'. By the end of the book the reader has encountered

everything from passion, jealously and hatred, but throughout

the novel the overriding feeling is of one boy trying to survive and

the love of a kestrel called "Kes".

Is there a book you particularly love and would like to recommend we add to our stock?

Perhaps you would like to write a book review for our Library Update?

And also, don’t forget that you can join our Book Club in a Bag.

There are lots of titles to choose from.

Tour Stop

Please wait here for a tour of the library

Looking ahead to

Autumn term...

Library Inductions

Library Inductions never follow the same format for long,

and this year is no exception!

We are going for a ‘back-to-basics’ approach, with all the

important information for students delivered on the

move while touring round the Library. We plan to

demonstrate the self-issue machines and show off all the

facilities as we go (silly walk not mandatory).

To book your students in for a 15 minute tour, send the

details to [email protected] Please include

desired date, time, course and size of group.
