This report highlights some of the activities undertaken by the UniveryLibrary in 2018, in response to the 2016 Library of the Future Report andits 25 recommendations, grouped in themes of Library Services, LibraryCollections, Library Organisation and Library Facilities and Systems. It is a long list of achievements that serves as a useful reminder of howmuch has changed, how far the library has come, and how much hardwork has been undertaken to get us here. This report references the Library of the Future report and as our guidingstrategic document that is appropriate, but with so many of therecommendations from that report now completed or embedded in policyand practice, it is time to move on. In the latter stages of 2018, librarystaff were actively engaged in a series of workshops to develop a newstrategic plan. Themes that emerged to form a framework for this plan are:

Leadership in Information ManagementHighly skilled, motivated and innovative staffQuality facilities, resources, systems and servicesProactive partnerships

We have been and will continue to operate in a climate of significantchange. I am immensely grateful for the library staff’s overall positiveattitude and hard work that has allowed me to report on so manyfantastic achievements over the last year. I am excited at the prospect ofworking with them on the various projects and activities that will lead tosuccess in achieving the strategic goals that have been identified in ournew plan: Going Beyond the Library of the Future. With sincere thanks, Teresa Chitty

LIAISON MODEL A new matrix model for academic liaison was rolledout at the beginning of 2018, with two liaisonlibrarians assigned to each Faculty. Together withdedicated senior roles for Teaching and LearningInnovation, Research Data Management andeResearch, all under the Academic Engagementportfolio. These staff have been responsible fordeveloping and implementing a number of newservices and innovations, including the Book aLibrarian service enabling students to book ameeting time directly with their Faculty LiaisonLibrarian, which has improved the visibility of LiaisonLibrarians to students and increased the number ofstudents requesting appointments.  The liaison modelwas reviewed at the end of the year andrecommendations for changes to increase flexibilityacross the team were approved.

LIBRARY SERVICES

COURSE READINGS PILOT A pilot of new course readings software, to bettersupport student learning was undertaken insemester two. The new software (Leganto) allowscourse co-ordinators and library staff to easily buildcomprehensive course reading lists and deliver themdirectly to course sites. Feedback from the pilot waspositive, from staff and students alike, and a fullrollout of “Course Readings” will be implemented inSemester One 2019, replacing the current Equella-based system. The library is collaborating with theLearning Enhancement and Innovations Team on thisproject to ensure a smooth transition.

ASK LIBRARY The Ask Library front-of-house service introduced in2017 continued to grow and increase its presencewith a number of developments including:

Fully implementing Ask Library service pointsacross all sites and establishing a dynamicstaffing model for Waite and RoseworthyBuilding an Ask Library Home Team whochampion and form the backbone of the AskLibrary serviceUpskilling a small cohort of Ask Library staff tosupport subject-specific tier 1 and 2 level queriesat the Law LibraryIssuing Course Readers at the Ask Library servicepoint to improve user experience and minimisethe need for students having to visit the Imageand Copy Centre (ICC)Implementing the use of CRM for Ask LibraryEstablishing an Ask Library service point on levelone of the Barr Smith Library (BSL)

LIBRARY WEBSITE The library website was upgraded to new softwareand given a new look and feel consistent with theoverall University site. With a large proportion of thelibrary’s services and collections provided in thedigital context, the library website is critical foreffective access and is consistently among the top ofthe hit list for the University overall.

RESEARCH SUPPORT A new product, LabArchives, was rolled out inpartnership with ITDS as part of the ReDa (ResearchData) Project to publish research data and otherresearch outputs. LabArchives is an electronic labnotebook system, which allows researchers toreplace hardcopy lab notebooks, and heads of labsand schools to have oversight of research carried outin their areas of responsibility. An increasing numberof academics are using Figshare, introduced last yearas part of the same project. Uptake of researcher IDshas also continued to grow, with 44% of activeacademics and 48%of HDR students registering forORCiDs. A new online data management trainingcourse is now available and has already beencompleted by over 300 academics and HDRstudents.

DISTRACTION IN/ACTION

Distraction In/Action, the library’s swot vac andexams program, was a major success this year withsome very popular visits from therapy dogs in theBarr Smith Library. A blanket service was alsoimplemented in the Reading Room, in response toprevious student feedback about the lack of heatingin the heritage space. This was organised inpartnership with the AUU who provided the blanketsand the use of their laundering service.

LIBRARY COLLECTIONS

LIBRARY ENDOWMENT FUND Over the years, the library has been fortunate to bethe recipient of a number of bequests of varyingamounts, from tens of thousands of dollars, tomillions. After a major review of these bequests, theUniversity’s Planning and Budget Committeeapproved a proposal to consolidate some of thelarger bequests into a single library endowment fundthat would give useful year-on-year return to investin collections. Some of the smaller bequests, with acorrespondingly smaller return, were spent outentirely and as a result we have been able to acquiresome significant digital resources that are alreadyreceiving extensive use. These include the GaleScholar suite of products,  the Springer BookArchive,  and two primary source digital databasesSocialism on Film and Pioneer Life.

PRINT COLLECTIONS One of the features of the refurbished space on levelone of the Barr Smith Library is the establishment ofcollection neighbourhoods; expanding on a modelfirst  implemented with the History collection beinggathered together in the heritage BSL ReadingRoom. The print collections have been speciallycurated on level one under branded themes of Music,Maps, East Asian Languages and an indigenouscollection with the Kaurna name Yaitya Ngutupira. A Recreational Reading Collection was alsoestablished; bringing together selected fiction, biographies, and popular non-fiction from existingcollections, and supplementing these with a numberof popular titles purchased using appeal funds. Withsome comfortable easy chairs and lamps creating alounge-type ambience, the aim is to promote andencourage reading for leisure and pleasure toimprove student well-being.

Building on the work done under the CollectionRevitalisation Project, a number of collectioninvigoration activities have been undertaken, including the identification, retrieval and rehoming ofRussian history resources and the establishment ofcollection neighbourhoods for film and media studiesand linguistics.

SERVICES FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS Free membership for year 11 and 12 secondary schoolstudents commenced in mid-March 2018 and wasformally announced by Professor Pascale Quester atthe Career Counsellors Conference in mid-June. Thisservice has been very well received with requests formemberships and orientation tours reaching a peakin the second half of 2018.

RARE BOOKS & SPECIAL COLLECTIONS As part of the History Festival, Rare Books & SpecialCollections curated a popular display, “For theGreater Good: the generous life of Sir Thomas Elder”celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth. Theonline exhibition “Cover to Cover: Exposing theBookbinder's Ancient Craft” was also enthusiasticallyreceived by the book arts community. In 2014, three Kaurna children’s writings from 1840-41 were presented by the Leipzig Mission to the BarrSmith Library to be held on permanent loan on behalfof the Kaurna community. In September 2018 RareBooks & Special Collections hosted a visit from theRev. Ravinder Salooja, the current Director of theLeipzig Mission, with the aim to establish contactwith Aboriginal communities which have developedlanguage reclamation programs based on the work ofthe 19th century German missionaries. The letterswere also showcased at the opening of YaityaNgutupira. The 50th volume was restored under the successfulAdopt-a-Book program.

LIBRARY ORGANISATION

ONE LIBRARY The Library of the Future Report highlighted an issuewith lack of centralisation and a siloed culture in thelibrary. In response to this, growing a one libraryculture has been the driving force behind many of theorganisational changes that have taken place in thelibrary over the last year. At a University level thelibrary’s department name was formally changed to“University Library” (from University Libraries) tosend a very visible message within the library andacross the wider University about the direction ofchange. The website, all signage, publicity material, documentation, business cards and such like werechanged to the singular “University Library”.

CHALLENGE AND CHANGE In order to help library staff improve theircapabilities in the use of digital tools and software inday-to-day work practice, a library-wide staffdevelopment exercise called Challenge and Changewas undertaken. Staff were encouraged to exercisetheir strategic muscles and come up with an idea ofsome improvement to enhance the library's value toits customers. The exercise was aimed at all staff,“one-in all-in” was the catch cry. Ideas ranging fromproposals for new services, improving workflows, andeven re-arranging furniture, were presented ininfographics, mindmaps, PowerPoint, Prezi, and evena few videos. There was  close to 100% participationand 79 resulting projects – large and small - haveeither been completed or are in progress.

CO-LOCATION OF LIBRARY STAFF Another way of fostering a one library culture is tophysically bring people together. At the time of theLOTF review there were seven separate team-basedworkrooms in the Barr Smith Library. Most of thestaff have now been co-located into a single openplan workroom. The wider benefits of staff being ableto have quick catch-ups with each other and get toknow more about each other and what is happeningin their day-to-day work are gradually being realisedand acknowledged.

CLOSURE OF IMAGE AND COPY CENTRE ANDOUTSOURCING OF EXAM PAPERS AND COURSEREADERS After an internal review and consultation withstakeholders, the decision was made to close theImage and Copy Centre (ICC) and outsource printingof University exam papers and course readers to acommercial provider. Print volumes had fallen overrecent years and the ICC equipment had reachedend-of-life, requiring a significant investment whichwas not justified given the ongoing fall in revenue. Aprocurement process to identify a commercialprovider for the high-volume printing commenced inNovember 2018 and will be confirmed in January2019. Discussions are also currently underway withexisting on-campus providers to provide some small-scale printing and binding services to students, staff, and departments.

LIBRARYFACILITIES

AND SYSTEMS

REFURBISHMENT OF LEVEL ONE OF THE BARR SMITH LIBRARY

In the first significant refurbishment of the BSL sincethe 1970s, level one was transformed into a light, bright modern facility that is appropriate for acontemporary, research-intensive university. Thereare over 200 individual study spaces - with poweroutlets, a refreshment area, which could at sometime be developed into a small café and a newcomputer suite in the 'wedge' area that joins theoriginal building to the extension. The refurbishmenthas also created a new eastern entrance to library, integrated with existing teaching space and majorcampus pathways. The Elder Music Library was closed and thecollection moved into this space, with the longeropening hours of the BSL providing improved accessto the Music collections. Rare Books and Special Collections are still to befound in this space as well and, with UniversityArchives, now offer extended opening hours forenquiries and access to the Special CollectionsReading Room. Student feedback on the new space has beenoverwhelmingly positive, with an appreciation of theambience and improved study facilities. Since therefurbishment, the library has seen an increase intraffic of 24% compared to previous years, demonstrating a high level of student satisfaction.

BARR SMITH LIBRARY MASTER PLAN Library Executive worked with the University’sInfrastructure team and architects on a master  plan, which will inform further staged refurbishmentprojects consistent with the style and ambience ofthe level one work. WRITING STUDIO As a result of close collaboration with the Faculty ofArts, Infrastructure, and ITDS, a vacated staff workroom on level two of the BSL has been transformedinto a facility to support a range of activities, events, and services associated with writing.

The Faculty of Arts’ Creative Writing classes will betaught in this space, which is appropriately locatedadjacent to the library’s literature collection. Theroom can also be used by student and communitygroups for thesis writing sessions, workshops, lunchtime lectures, seminars and book launches. The re-purposing of this space has also allowed forthe provision of four new bookable group discussionrooms and a dedicated workroom for the library’svolunteers.

UNIARK SYSTEMS AND ONLINE DEVELOPMENTS In May, the University Archives launched a newmanagement system, EMu. The implementationproject was managed by ITDS and deliveredimproved security for the extensive data thatdescribes and manages the collection. The systemalso provides functionality to allow online access tothe database including display of digital images anddocuments. In collaboration with ITDS Training Services, newcourse content has been developed for all Universitystaff to enable online, self-paced training andassessment in HPE Content Manager and relatedrecordkeeping concepts. The course consists of six‘core skills’ modules and, at this stage, the onlinecourse will complement the existing face-to-facegroup and 1:1 delivery of HPECM training. For over two years, a group of University ArchivesVolunteers has been assisting with research and dataentry into a national ARC-funded database, ExpertNation. As a result of this, a local portal to thedatabase was established to enable researchers toaccess University of Adelaide and RoseworthyAgricultural College related records about students, graduates and staff who served during World War I,and tracks the careers of those who survived theconflict.
