Gearing Up

School Libraries

for the

21st Century Learner

Open Social Semantic Mobile

Page 2: Library Support Unit Draft

WHY? School learning structures are pre-digital, and have not kept

pace.

Disconnect between students and technology outside school, and the more restricted use they experience inside school

.

Pedagogical Shifts in the 21st Century

Teacher directed learning ➥ Self/ participatory learning

Classroom learning ➥ Networked/global learning

Standards driven ➥ Exploring ideas and concepts

Teaching ➥ Active learning

Teacher expertise ➥ Collaborative learning partners

Page 3: Library Support Unit Draft

Learning is more integrated than ever.

There is a direct connection between the lesson and the library.

There is a symbiotic relationship between the learning resource, the learner, the teacher and the librarian.

WHY?:

Page 4: Library Support Unit Draft

QUOTE

“We have an Internet connection and Google – the library is redundant.”

RESPONSE

Recent research* shows that this is definitely not the case. Student s in schools with libraries perform quantitively and qualitatively better. With a new learning paradigm which prepares students for living and working in a complex information environment, libraries are more important than

ever.

Library WHY?:

*[Recent studies of library systems in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Pennsylvania - http://is.gd/Sl1wbc]

What a Library Does:

Page 6: Library Support Unit Draft

Much of the time of a librarian is taken up doing administrative, technical or routine work which can be centralised thus freeing their time to do

the important work of supporting the development of a 21st century lifelong learner/knowledge creator and a Librarian 3.0 attitude

Librarian Key Work Areas :

Reading Development

Extending the Curriculum

Information Fluency

Bringing the Library ALIVE!

Web 3.0

Librarian Key Work Areas:

WEB 1.0 was for viewing and linking

Personal Learning Environments; - Twitter etc.

Personal Learning Networks – Skype, rafi.ki

Personal web tools – Facebook, Tumblr

Cloud computing – Open access software`

Mixed Reality (e, v and p)

Web 3.0 a thread through the data universe

our context and any context their/our data

infinitely reconnected for other and ever smarter uses

Making a significant impact on teaching and learning

Making the library(online and offline) fun and enjoyable

Motivating all kinds of readers/searchers

Keeping up-to-date and staying part of the big picture

Being a leader not a follower

Encouraging learners and teachers to be creative and innovative

A Future Librarian’s Life:

Page 12: Library Support Unit Draft

So let’s free up some time for them to do this!

Please consider

the following

Page 13: Library Support Unit Draft

Direction 1:

To develop Policies & Procedures : A Library 3.0 Orientation

Standards for services and collections

Procedures for all aspects of the library service

Evaluation Criteria

Libraries Support Unit (LSU) Proposal

Page 14: Library Support Unit Draft

Direction 2:

To streamline the Document Cycle : Centralised selection (in liaison with faculty & librarians)

Centralised ordering

Centralised Receipt, Upload and Distribution

Economies of scale - $$ saved through co-ordinated

procedures

Libraries Support Unit (LSU) Proposal

Page 15: Library Support Unit Draft

Direction 3:

To create a Digital Portal: which integrates:

library management system

eLearning

Digital Content and Services

Interactive Environments (e.g. www.rafi.ki)

Libraries Support Unit (LSU) Proposal

Page 16: Library Support Unit Draft

Direction 4:

To be a Training Provider: Developing Guided Enquiry as a core skill

Training Library Staff in Library Literacy

Workshops for Faculty and Library Co-operation

Co-ordinate training for library and faculty

Libraries Support Unit (LSU) Proposal

Page 17: Library Support Unit Draft

Short term: Better co-ordinated procedures;

Minimised duplication of materials;

Librarian’s time freed for more learner-centred activity;

Beginning of cost saving on materials.

Libraries Support Unit (LSU): Benefits

Page 18: Library Support Unit Draft

Medium Term: Continued saving of resources (human and financial);

An improved student experience;

More integrated learning process;

More value derived from the materials and the library;

Better co-operation between faculty and library.

Libraries Support Unit (LSU) Benefits

Page 19: Library Support Unit Draft

Long Term: First Class Status with a resultant effect on reputation and matriculation;

Continued saving of resources (human and financial);

A dynamic environment with independent learners and happy staff

A 21st century virtual learning environment

A library fully integrated into the teaching and learning cycle

Taaleem will be ready for Web 3.0
